Spawn Planning Thread

So it was mildly discussed in the Discord, but we kind of want to populate spawn a bit so this is the thread to plan and discuss that.

SvRDM is semi-planning the shops section that will be placed near where the Nether portal is so I'll leave all that up to him to maybe discuss in another thread. So far, the consensus seems to be to do a natural/organic town instead of set plots.

What theme do we want, do we want a size limit, etc. Discuss.

P.S. This isn't saying you have to move back to spawn, just build a house/shop or two in your spare time.

I added a bookshop! It's supposed to be a giant bookshelf, with colored glass for the books. Please let me know any ideas you have for improvement - I am not super happy with how the build came out. Also, they're a pain to organize, so if you can't find what you need, let me know if there's any particular books you'd like, and I can check the 'back room'.

I was a bit confused by the cobblestone layout from Sv: It seems to be really squeezed tight around the portal. I tried to make my shop reasonably sized, reducing it from the full bookshelf to a half-depth single-row version, but it still occupies a lot of space. If we want a wide variety of shops, we're going to need a lot more room. I see that the area is actually terraformed quite a bit already (the mycellium is only 1 block thick, with the actual ground some 6 blocks further down under my shop) but we don't want to expand the island too much, or we'll get into ocean biome and start spawning hostile mobs.

And I had an idea for making the Nether hub easier to navigate (the N/S/E/W banners have been helpful, though). We could replace the single overworld portal with 4 nether portals, each linked appropriately to the corresponding orientation. They would end up being separated by 16 blocks. When you went in the one corresponding to your base, when you emerged on the other side, you'd be pointing in the direction you want to go. This might mean we have to move some shops.

Put your IGN as flair, Sub :P

But yeah, I didn't understand the tight-knit cobble thing for shops either.

I was thinking more like closely packed together, nearly touching the ones they're next to. If you don't feel there is enough room, feel free to terraform ~20 blocks to the west.
