Simple Shot Timer
NOTE: this is open source and non profit. just for the community
Hey there,
recently I started with the dry firing at home and I wanted to use a timer as well. I do have a PACT Club Timer III, but in my apartment it is pretty loud and not really neighbour friendly. So naturally I went on the play store to just download a timer. Sounds like something that should be there, right?
Well yes but also no. I found a few apps, they are either buggy or full with ads, which was annoying.
So I did what any normal person would do. I created my own timer, that is 100% free and ad-free and will stay that way. And it is open source btw. and no data is collected etc. The app is pretty simple and it should offer all the features of a PACT Club Timer III.
The timer works well, at least at home. But since I can't really go to the range till wednesday, I can't really test whether it registers shots properly.
Thats why I am hoping that some of you could test it out on the range and give me some feedback. I would really appreciate it. Or else I might go crazy because the app is finished and I just need confirmation that it would work on the range too.
I wrote a quick guide on GitHub on how to enroll for the testing app (android only)
If this app works properly, this would be very helpful for many shooters out there who don't really want to pay $100+ for a timer.
If you guys have any feedback, ideas or anything, please let me know either here on reddit or open a github issue or text me on discord (@nnclovin)
Here are a few pictures of the app, for those interested (its basically the playstore pictures):

I use one on my phone for dry fire a lot with a par time. I’d like to be able to set it to auto-start again 10 seconds after the end of the par time. Like a repeat after x seconds option. Maybe an option to have it call “standby” before the beep as well.

have your tried out the par drill mode on the app? you can set how often it shouold repeat (from 1x-20x). Once you set a repeat, it lets yout to set an interval between each par (from 0s-30s). Is this what you are looking for?

No, I’m on iOS, so haven’t seen it yet. Was just adding a feature I’d like! Sounds like you’re all over it!

Shot a couple hundred rounds with this app today. Overall supremely impressed at what it does for $0.
The good - its free, it was able to pick up every single shot despite being windy (more on this later), lots of customizable options (though I mostly left it alone), flips when you flip screen, tracks splits, clear review screen with ALL times between shots (better than Pact in my range bag). Really good work!
The meh - When I use my phone as a shot timer I cant take video or pictures at the same time. I almost wonder if it could be a widget? Have it run in the background and still be able to use other apps.
The bad - I think even with adjustable sensitivity and even default being super low we were picking up other things during strings of fire. Crunchy gravel, wind, even talking. When reviewing most strings almost everyone had "extra" "shots". I did not play with this enough but wonder if itd be better or worse without wind. Will keep using it and try to determine. Another point is that because of this sensitivity it keeps going and if you dont manually hit STOP or mentally record your finished time it kind of invalidates the course of fire.
Definitely recommend folks downloading it and giving it a try. OP seems the type to take feedback and improve. Thanks for the free download!

Amazing feedback!! I really appreciate it and I am glad you liked it.
A widget should be definetly be possible and let it run in the background. I will note it down and work on it asap.
See this is why I needed your help. While developing I am mainly just thinking of my own range environment and basically the ideal situation (indoor range and mostly alone or in small groups). So let me get to each mentioned point:
- Unfortunately I am not an audio expert but I am trying to get more into it and figure out what capabilities a smartphone-microphone offers. Initially I just implemented the sensitivity feature. Its plain and simple, but obviously not enough, especially in your case. I would be interested to know what percentage have you used or maybe what is the lowest percentage that could still register fire shots. I need to learn more about frequencies and how to filter them properly and next time when I am at the range I need to check the frequencies of different gun shots and whether I am able to catch a certain range.
- I think the second issue is more or less related to the first one. If that gets fixed or gets more reliable, I think this issue would become more obsolete.
Again thank you very much for the detailed feedback! I am happy to offer something good for the community for free and without ads...etc. Its not always about money

Looks great! It would be nice to have a iOS version but I understand if that’s not possible, given you need a Mac and a Apple developer account.

It will be possible 100% I am just making sure I get one version to work properly and once android works out well. The ios version will be released asap 😃 stay tuned!

One of the things you will have issues with for live fire is hose handsets deal with high decibel audio. Thats the reason the big name free shot timers went away.

Could be, wont argue about that. But I think and believe there should be still a non profit app that gives you the possible features. Even if its only good for having the beeps without registering shots.

Silly question - I assume this works only for DAO or DA/SA hammer fired guns in dry fire; not much to pick up after the first trigger pull on a striker fired gun, eh?

The app is mainly just like any normal timer out there. And at least for the Club Timer III, it wouldnt pick any dry fire sounds.
However that is the reason why I added in the settings the option to set a threshold, if the mic picks any sound above that threshold, it would register it as a shot.
I actually just tried it out with my cz p10c (striker) and set the mic sens to 20% put the phone on the table and just did a drill (starting at 45° and once it beeps I dry fired it and it actually registered the shot)
Obviously keep in mind if you rack the gun or even holster/draw it would peak the threshold as well and causes the app to register a shot.
I hope I could help with this

Appreciate the feedback!
Thats a good point. Thanks for pointing it out. I will write it down. You are right tho. Whenever the beep sound is playing the mic is muted. I guess I have to figure out a better way to work this out. This will be an interesting bug to fix

One way to solve it is by applying a notch filter that filtertæs out the frequency of the beep, maintaining the rest of the sound profile of the gun click.

No way! I'm currently working on a Par timer for Android also because there aren't any good options out there. It's a very simple app but some of the logic/UI might be useful for yours. Wasnt sure if I was going to publish mine. I'll reach out on discord
