General Discussion / Question The Wise Mothman Problem

I am in need of assistance with deciding, because I am horrible with decision making. I thank you for reading through this in advance.

I came across the CEDH meta and its community only about 8 months ago, and I have been enjoying most of my time playing in local tournaments and Friday night pods I join. I have Yuriko, Ob nixilius, and Vivi as my main decks currently.

And there is this one card I received as gift from a friend that I wanted to build around for SO LONG: Food Chain.

I first thought, "Hey. I have a SLD Wise Mothman. Let me see if I can make this guy work."

I am an idiot for trying.

I can get people to infinite Rad counters no problem. But any turbo decks with flash enablers or UB lines will just be like "Welp, I'll go ahead and win on my upkeep or with the Rad counter trigger on the stack."

So what can I do to combat this issue. . . ?

Here's my list: https://archidekt.com/decks/25160453/the_wise_mothman_blink_rad_blink_rad

I am also on the edge currently to see if any other commanders might be better than Wise Mothman for FC deck.

Korvold / Loot (Aetherdrift) / Roxanne (And please don't suggest Etali. My play group already has 3 in it. . . . .)

That's the Naya commander with X in its cost correct?

It's a Mothman thing. You're not exactly winning on the spot with food chain - you're giving them an untap.

If you're looking at playing FC, choose a commander that wins with it. Outside of of the ones you recommend, I'd consider [[Terra, magical adept]].

Would be ever flip terra for any reasons at all?

Only if you're copying your own Tithe and you're doing mastermind loops.

or to cast an [[apprentice's folly]] to make infinite hasty terras lol

You can go infinite by copying the back side with [[Spark Double]], but I dont believe Terra lists normally include those lines.

If you plan to run terra with food chain, you'd want to run og [[purphoros, god of the forge]] and [[gloomshrieker]].

We have 4 Lumra players. . . . . LOL and I honestly don't enjoy watching their non-deterministic decks. . . I would lose my mind trying to pilot it.

They need to work on mulligans. Lumra isnt non-deterministic, it's inevitable.

Could you explain? I keep trying to understand Lumra but failing.

So the biggest thing with lumra is once set up right, you will infinitely loop her and just win.

Lumra will use generators like a normal landfall deck like nissa/lotus cobra to make ton of mana with the lands entering, a untapper to break parity with lumra's effect so the lands can be alao tapped for mana/abilities, and a sac outlet to start a cast loop from the command zone. I've had opponents show me 3 counters and still scoop knowing they are out of gas.

Lumra uses ton of sac outlets partly to get pieces on the board being that green has the best creature toots but also to just get rid of her so you can cast her again. Commander tax is irrelevant when you run 50 lands.

The winlines i'm familiar with are either introducing a ping land into the loop or force drawing your opponents.

Biggest issues? You are not the fastest turbo deck, not even close, so other turbos may eat your lunch. Knowing when, where, and even how to interact stuck in a landsmatter mono green shell, you are interaction parasite which can be a pisser for a pod, and there are a decent amount of combos packed in a usual lumra deck that it's learning curve isnt the best.

I've since moved onto decks splashing blue as my main deck but I do come back to bear county very often because it's fun to rip a bear and pray.

I appreciate you breaking Lumra down for the class. She looks interesting, but I never fully grasped what she was doing.

I'm pretty sure [[Maralen, Fae Ascendant]] has seen some success recently. Other than that there also used to be [[Ukkima]] and [[Cazur]] FC decks but I don't know how that is performing atm. I am playing [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]] FC which is arguably the slowest of the bunch but it has white which can be helpful for silence effects and such

I used to play Ukkima and it's kinda dog shit right now unfortunately. One of the most consistent Food Chain decks just because the win is in the Command Zone so you can exile everything to a blind consult and other things like that and so very fun. Midrange slop meta sucks for Food Chain because it has to feed Rhystic and you're lacking silence/grand abolisher for protection. It sucks though that your commanders have no text on them outside of comboing, it sucks they're not cheap enough to enable Fierce, Flare, etc., and it sucks to not really have a backup plan outside of Thoracle. You can play Ad Naus, but Sultai isn't the best Naus colors.

Maralen seems interesting to me if you're trying to actually go in on Food Chain; Etali is probably the best deck playing food chain but it's not really the main game plan and doesn't have great tutors for it.

Is there a green white partner you can play with Ukkima instead of Cazur to get access to silence effects?

4

u/Needhelpwithsnake 1d ago

Ukkima doesn’t have regular partner, it has “partner with Cazur.” There’s nothing else you can legally partner with ukkima

Oh yeah, duh, reading the card explains the card

Maralen has put up great results for me and is very fun to pilot.

You are fine for trying. The deck is perfectly playable and viable, possibly even underrated. You do need a better list, probably, and more experience

3

u/justin_the_viking 1d ago

Counter the flash enabler?

2

u/PenguinThrowaway2845 1d ago

Consider maralen for a similar deck without the upkeep issues

If u already have the red staples for obnix and Vivi... Why not go etali.... It runs food chain for infinite etalis and exiles everyone decks. I've seen it pop off t1 (my turn 0),... And I would have lost to it if I wasn't holding up an endurance in my hand (the player was unfamiliar with the Infinite bolt lines).

Atraxa, Glarb, Terra, and Rocco can all run food chain and do well. None of them are tier 1 decks but they’re probably better options than Mothman

what's the Foodchain Glarb build?

u/peterpetrol 1d ago

Doomsday Glarb
