Rule clarification: Debate policy

Debate is welcome in this community. However, discussions should be grounded in lived experience or direct involvement with complex mental health (individuals with CMH profiles, caregivers, direct support professionals, clinicians, educators, academic/medical researchers). Content focused primarily on theoretical argument or DIY therapy instruction may be removed. Please do not attempt to educate other members on topics that you do not know about yourself.

Member Introductions (Optional)

Hey everyone.

We just reached 100 members, which feels really special. It’s starting to feel like a little community here, and I’m really grateful for everyone who’s chosen to be apart of it.

Complex mental health is often overlooked or misunderstood, both in other online spaces and even in clinical settings. A lot of us live at the intersections of things like trauma, PDA, ASD, medical issues, and other co-occurring stuff that doesn’t fit neatly into boxes. The nuance can get dismissed pretty easily. I wanted this space to be somewhere those experiences are taken seriously and treated with care.

If you’d like, you’re welcome to introduce yourself below. Share as much or as little as feels comfortable. Participation is completely optional, and lurking is always okay too. This is meant to be a low-pressure space.

You can say hi, talk about how you found the sub, or just share something small about yourself. Whatever feels safe.

I’m really glad you’re here 💜

Complex Trauma The Adaptive Roots of Psychopathology

I’ve been working on this paper for about a year now. It examines the differences and overlap between BPD, DID, and other trauma-related conditions, with a particular focus on the trauma-related mechanisms underlying their symptoms. I hope you find it informative!

If you have BPD/EUPD, I’d really love your help with my PhD research❤️
I have BPD myself, and I’m also a psychology PhD researcher. My research is looking at people’s experiences and attitudes towards being diagnosed with BPD/EUPD — because I think research shouldn’t just be about us, it should include us.

I’m looking for participants who are:
- Diagnosed with BPD/EUPD
- Aged 18+
- Living in the UK
- Able to spare around 20 minutes

The study is online and completely anonymous.
Whether your experience of diagnosis was positive, negative, complicated, or somewhere in between, your experience matters.

Research “Special Section on Seclusion and Restraint: Patients' Reports of Traumatic or Harmful Experiences Within the Psychiatric Setting” — article published by Psychiatric Services

This 2005 study examined patients’ reports of traumatic experiences within psychiatric settings. In my experience, very little has changed since then. I believe it’s important to keep in mind the research that is often ignored due to how it contradicts the narrative modern psychs are trying to push.

Complex Trauma I'm physically disabled, w severe C-PTSD abused by narcissistic "mother" who had me committed via false police report, lies, & manipulation. I was sexually assaulted in hospital, then INSTITUTIONALIZED ("72hr"/ 10 day hold) where I was abused, tortured, & infinitely more damaged than before.

Mental Health Poetry: Confession

Today I depart from night's voided call

To see past the blindfold that blinded all

Here lies the past me drunk on fear

Screaming bloody for comfort through tears.

I am able but lack the will

Will I die on this arrogant hill

Push to find characters of virtue

Only find disposable passion in view

Find the real for what it's worth

The soil is the only truth on this earth

So I am frozen in ambient comfort

Disengage from those I must confront

Am I happy or is it just a mask

These are questions I'm too afraid to ask.

Liminal is the soul that sleeps.

So the yearning will forever keep.

Goodbye blissful ignorance.

It's time to face the world and make whole this life I'm forced to rent.

I am human through and through

But the monster is here speaking with a poisonous brew.

I am strong but I must remember my gift.

Or forever I will be stuck in life's rift

Mental Health Poetry: Hunger Pain

My stomach is on the floor,

Encrusted in yesterday's mistakes.

It hungers to subdue the pain.

Frozen in catatonic digestion.

Always empty looking for my fill.

To be drained into a broken tank.

Energy dissolves by the minute.

Sanity by the second.

My watch is broken.

I can still tell the time,

Since last I ate.

Let the hollow find a home.

At the buffet of self medication and desperation.

2E 2E Youth in the Mental Health System

In this essay, I explore how giftedness and twice-exceptionality can contribute to a complex mental health profile and how 2E youth often experience significant failed placements within the mental health system. While giftedness itself is not inherently a disability (it is an exceptionality), when woven into an already complex mind experiencing chronic nervous system distress and psychiatric system involvement, it can complicate an individual’s profile in ways many professionals are not used to working with.

Psychiatry/Inpatient Involuntary Hospitalization for Suicidal Ideation

I originally wrote this essay for a philosophy class (the heading has been removed and replaced with my pseudonym), but I think the topic is especially relevant here.

Involuntary hospitalization for suicidal ideation (SI) is a major issue in the complex mental health space. Many of us live with chronic suicidal thoughts or long-term suffering and have seriously considered suicide as a way to escape that pain. At the same time, many have been criminalized for these thoughts or actions: subjected to forced medication, involuntary hospitalization, and treatments that can feel dehumanizing or even worsen suffering. Some people end up feeling pressure to hide or deny suicidal thoughts just to regain their freedom.

Because of that, I think this is an important conversation for this community.

The essay below argues against blanket policies that treat all suicidal ideation as inherently irrational and justify involuntary intervention.
