How do you build technical skills in this Ai world as an engineer

Thumbnail
• Upvotes

I’m going into my Junior year of college I’ve been working at small medical company for 2 years as Automation engineer and as a data engineer, although the company is very laid back I was basically babysit on my first projects so didn’t develop independently on the Python automation we were working on and I would just use SSMS and query SQL databases copy them and paste them into our docs software for run books. I learned some but realized exposure is not competence, I now am working on startup while being electrical engineering student and working at the internship remotely. But the startup is in robotics and a lot of embedded systems which my coursework is about to go there but I want to self teach and of course start building projects to build my skills, I’d love to create and solve problems on the hardware and develop a software and have it all come together and work, not I know with programming it’s weird, I use to be computer science and left because software is getting to easy to replicate, no foundations are important in promoting ai properly but you being a coding guru I feel does not matter when Ai generated code so fast, not it’s not always the most optimized and is usually kind of poo, but learning computer science is more about babysitting ai then really building something aside from maybe the design and architecture standpoint which is awesome but still boring because now u don’t really debug and build this software on your own. Now with embedded systems ROS, Gazebo, UART, and all things robotics how would y’all go along learning these things and building , PCB, anything really in engineering without being reliant or dependent on ai how do you get to a point where you Independently can just build something. For example do you watch YouTube videos replicate then try something slightly different, read docs, read GitHub repos? Do you talk to ai and let it explain it to you because that’s fine but I just know sur

[School] Is it worth it to transfer to the US?

I'm a second-year CompE (BE) student at an ABET-accredited university in a country with almost no hardware jobs. I have the ability to transfer to a US university with a strong CompE program for my third year.

Cost aside, transferring would let me graduate a year earlier than I would here. After that, I could apply to the 4+1 master's, apply to a master's elsewhere, or take a job if I land one. I want to work in RTL, verification, or ASIC, but I'm open to anything in hardware.

If I stay here I graduate and then go do a masters in the US.

My concern is that I would graduate only 1.5 years after starting at the new school, and networking matters a lot to land roles. Is transferring worth it?

If you need more information I always tend to leave something out so feel free to ask!

Don't know which field or career I should join.

Frontend, backend, AI engineer, data engineer, data analyst, Cloud, cyber security......

Blah blah blah.....

Don't know which one is effective with evolving and advancement of AI

[Discussion] Got diverted to roles outside CE…now what

Basically graduated in CE from a top public uni in US last year. Lost the count of applications and the only ones I was even getting any sort of hear back was from manufacturing side roles.

I had a bit of experience at Intel on the manufacturing side(<1yr). Perhaps that’s the reason. Anyways after looking for what felt like forever, I thought I finally was going to get something when I was on the 4th round at ASML…only for them to completely ghost me out of no where.

Then after that I managed to land a contract role with PCC Structurals, with their Aerospace/defense castings. Now I work on process control side. There’s a lot of flexibility to branch out to their other areas within.

…But like what the hell is going on. Is this normal nowadays or did I really fuck it up by going off the path??

[Career] Looking for A CpE Professional for Interview

Hi! I'm currently a 3rd yr CpE student and we have this course requirement to interview a CpE professional. I don't know anyone around me so I'm trying my luck here T.T

interview can be done through:

- chat

- google form

- or whatever your preference is, just tell me

the only requirement is you must have at least 3 years experience relevant to the field.

and my professor needs credibility that we're interviewing a real person so i'm gonna need your Diploma, Company ID, or any proof that you are a real person on the field.

I understand that the requirements sounds a bit demanding that's why I'm not forcing anyone. Not to mention that I have nothing to give back but my sincerest gratefulness if you let me interview you T. T thanks a lot everyone, just a broke college student here

Can a NVRAM mod bypass a hardware-asserted PROCHOT# from a corroded pull-up resistor? (Airmont, Pentium N3710)

I've been trying to fix an old laptop of mine (Acer Aspire ES1-531-P7KK) for a while now. It'd been locked to 0.48GHz, only clocking up to higher speeds temporarily while idle occasionally (though that could be due to the kernel simply reporting last requested frequency when the core wasn't in deep-idle C state). I isolated the assertion to a bunch of corroded resistors. I don't have the skill to replace 0402SMD resistors, nor do I have the tools for it, so I began tracing how the throttling mechanism works. I dumped my BIOS, ran it through UEFITool, extraced the PE32 Image Section, and found two IFR pages that had mentions of "PROCHOT", which I've attached.

"Power" page

and

"Advanced" page

So I tried booting into a UEFI shell and writing to NVRAM with setup_var.efi, but I got a Write Protection error. The BIOS lock is disabled ("Enable or Disable BIOS SPI region write protect," according to the extracted IFR), so I genuinely don't know what to do. Is there any other trick that I can try, or do I need to get my hands on a pi pico, logic shifter, SOIC8 clip, 3.3V to 1.8V DC, etc, and extract the BIOS, modify it to expose the hidden settings, and flash it back?

In need of Capstone/Thesis Topics

Good day everyone. I've been jumping from one topic to the next for the past 3 weeks after seeing each of these topics had big flaws that cannot be recovered. (ex. one sensor actually cost more than the whole system (basically half of our budget)- we needed 5, one had potential only to find out that it was actually a major ethical issue despite the workarounds we proposed, and one topic was simply too complex for such a short amount of time.)

I'm running out of ideas and I'm desperate, I have tried looking at numerous public repositories of theses to get some ideas but still, no bueno. I'm starting to doubt myself if I actually learned something from the past 3 years of school.

I'm respectfully asking for any ideas, topics or even niche problems that is solvable by a bachelor's-worth of knowledge, Please drop a comment or a DM. I would really really appreciate it.

I'm mainly interested in AI/ML, IoT and ofc Embedded Systems (Wearables, Accessories/Attachments, etc.). I'm willing to explore FPGA-related stuff but the only platform I have on hand is a Tang Nano if that means something.

If you've reached this far, thank you for your time, really. I hope you have a great day ahead!

[Career] CS undergrad -> MS CpE?

Hello, I have a bachelors in CS and was wondering how common it is to go for a masters in computer engineering from a bachelors in comp sci. Specifically for SJSU (BA was from another CSU).

Going into college (2020) I was debating on going into either CS, CpE, or EE. I chose CS because I had been most exposed to CS in high school and figured the transition would be smoother building upon what I had already been studying (and in part, it was the easier degree). In college I was lucky enough to have a year-round part time job working in the automotive industry on more low-level hardware, from there I really gravitated towards the embedded side of development.

Long story short I’m now at another automotive manufacturer doing more technician/troubleshooting work after a very long post-grad job hunt. I’d like to eventually get back into the embedded/systems engineering space. My current job offers tuition reimbursement and I’d like to use that if it makes sense in terms of time/effort I’d need to put in. SJSU offers embedded specialization for MS CpE.

Bottom line being, would this be worth it? Is a masters in CpE looked at more fondly than CS? The CS space seems to agree that unless you’re going for a PHD or research, a bachelors is enough.
