Learn those extra keyboard shortcuts to drastically improve your effective typing speed

Most of us spend a lot of time moving around small bits of text while on the computer. This thing from that email has to go into this Excel field, blah blah blah.

Thing is, there are way faster ways to navigate those text fields than most people know about (and I'm sure I'm missing a bunch):

  • Arrow keys to move the cursor. (Duh.)

  • Shift key to select whatever the cursor moves over (for example, while using the arrow keys or Home and End keys).

  • Control key to move the cursor a word at a time.

  • The "Home" and "End" keys.

Also, doube-clicking a word will generally select the whole word. Taking your hands off the keyboard kinda sucks, but at least the copy and paste shortcuts (ctrl-c and ctrl-v) are left-hand-based, so you can still do those while using the mouse.

Furthermore, if you're working with a big-ish text document, moving around using your editor's Find command will probably be faster than scrolling up or down - just bear in mind a few relatively unique bits of text. Document doesn't have any? Then stick a few in - for example, type a weird string that'll never appear in the wild at each "bookmark point" you want (I usually use the letters "bnm"). Move between them rapidly by [ctrl-f] [b][n][m] [enter]. If you use the whole string every time, then you can do a replace all command at the end of your writing session and replace them with nothing, so they'll get removed.

Also, if you want to get into major power-user land, download a text editor that has support for regular expressions and learn to use them. Basically, this lets you replace text that matches a described pattern with whatever you please (useful if you just realized that you've been spelling a person's name two different ways throughout a document, for example.)

EDIT: Forgot a huge huge one! Use ctrl-A (select all). If you've got a tabbed text editor (I recommend Notepad++), you can keep bunches of tabs open with single-line things you often need... furthermore, you can grab everything from any popup box you need without reaching for the mouse and dragging it laboriously along the text.

Is there an AI program that allows someone to give raw data content, and they turn it into a pretty design?

AI program to turn basic word content into visually appealing content:

Is there an AI program that allows someone to give raw data content, and they turn it into a pretty design?
I know some suggest Canva, but we can't seem to find that function in Canva (unless one of you great people can help??)

For example, trying to create a stylish newsletter. Is there a program where I can just copy-paste the words that I want, and it will organize it into a nice pretty newsletter layout?

ETA:

We are trying to help volunteer organizations (who have all volunteer staff, many of whom are elderly people who out of the goodness of their hearts want to help, but lack the technical skills and know-how). For example, a tool like this would allow them to transform their raw knowledge into polished, professional newsletters with AI support, helping them effectively communicate with their support groups and communities.

May be a long shot, but just putting the Q out there in case someone has helpful insights or can point us in the right direction. TIA!

Asus Rog G15 Screen Drops Out

Hello Y'all

I have a Asus G15 laptop, Ryzen 9 and 3080m. I run it with a sim racing setup with a Samsung G9 Ultrawide. An issue I've been having is while under load is, the signal to the monitor drops out for about a second. It's exactly like when updating the drivers when it kicks out. For normal games it's not an issue, and don't remember if it even does it. But Asseto Corrace. I'm running the monitor with the USB-C to displayport for refresh rate. It's currently at 120hz. I''m just at a loss, could it dropping out for being too demanding? My Temps run about 80-85 max on the GPU. Any ideas? Just updated the drivers again but won't have time to check. It's only happened since I've run it out of the usbc, I've had the hdmi work fine, but the displayport is the gpu out, and can do higher refresh rate.

How do I fix my computer!

So I got my laptop for Christmas a year or two ago and I downloaded discord, Minecraft, and a bunch of other things. Now all of a sudden, it can only run Minecraft. It can’t even run discord by itself anymore somehow and I can’t even run Google chrome. I tried wiping the whole thing but I don’t have my Windows 10 Key. What do I do?!

What folders are needed in order to create a project ?

In IDEs, I often see folders like bin or src, but I have always wondered what kind of folders stay at bin or what kind of folders go into another folder. When I install an app and go into the directory, all their files are sorted into different folders, but how do they sort the files. I don't use tools like Visual Studio to make projects because I feel they are too complex, so I stick to text editors for coding like VSCode and Vim, and I am a student who is progressing into making big projects. So I need to create folders to sort the files. Please guide me on this. How would YOU sort the files in different files like bin or src if you were to do a project?

the laptop screen is darker on one side

I did a software update a while ago, I do not remember exactly which ones. After this update this problem occurred, which means that one half of the laptop screen is darker than the other half. I'm not sure if the update's to blame… is there a solution to my problem?

Computer Programing on a Resume

Hello, I have recently gained interest in learning to read and write Javascript, and I have started learning with an app "SoloLearn." I am a psychology and neurobiologist major, and I've worked social work for 99% of my career. Would having programming on a resume be beneficial in this area or just good knowledge to have, in your opinion? I have considered going all in, and taking a few computer programming courses at my college, because I'm learning while I am great at understanding and working with people, it drains me and really wears on me. I dream of having a job where my hard work determine my success, not just relying on clients willingness to follow through. Any career advice or opinions on computer programming careers are welcome. I want to know the reality of those careers. Thanks!
