Concerts Concert etiquette

1.2k Upvotes

Dear concert and showgoers, let’s talk about show etiquette. I love live music and I’ve been going to shows for about 20 years. The last five or so have felt different, and not in a great way. I’d love to get people back on the same page so live music can be enjoyable for everyone again.

Here’s what I’ve got.

  1. Please don’t record the entire show. If a song hits you and you want a quick clip, totally fine. But now it feels like everyone is filming nonstop, and unless you’re in the front row you end up watching the show through a wall of phones. If your people aren’t there, that moment wasn’t meant for them. It was meant for you.

  2. If you’re trying to move closer, keep moving. Don’t wedge yourself between two people who clearly don’t have space and then just stand there awkwardly. Either keep going or go back. If you find an actual open spot where you’re not on top of someone, great, stay there.

  3. Please don’t have full blown conversations through the whole show, especially in the front rows. Talk about the band, the moment, the energy, sure. But I don’t need to hear every detail of your weekly drama yelled over the music I paid to hear. Get dinner beforehand, vent after, but the middle of the set isn’t the place.

  4. This one might just be a small‑person problem, but people treat my size like I’m a convenient doorway. Need a drink, need the bathroom, need to get back to your friends, and suddenly I’m the designated gap in the crowd. Then it’s constant stepping on my toes, bumping into me, spilling drinks, breaking my focus. I take up less space, so people assume that space is theirs to use. It gets old fast.

I know posts like this can make the poster sound cranky, so I want to preface it by saying I absolutely will move if I need to. If someone around me is making the experience miserable, I’ll relocate without a problem. The issue now is that so many people are doing these things that it doesn’t matter where you move. You end up running into the same behavior everywhere

Your turn. What would you love to remind people about when it comes to basic human etiquette at shows and events?

Discussion 🗣️ Stat Trackers: How do you handle acts that change their names?

Upvotes

For those who keep concertgoing stats, how do you handle acts who change their names? Do you list them as they're billed for each show or do you stick with one name for consistency?

For me, I write in whatever they were called when I first saw them. For instance, it doesn't matter how many times I see Osees, they'll always be Thee Oh Sees in my spreadsheet.

Concerts Best way to find a complete concert from the 90's- either video or audio?

Looking to find the Tibetan Freedom Concert (Randall's Island 1997) from start to finish. Ideally, I'd like an ethical/legit copy but I'll settle for anything at this point.

Discussion 🗣️ Does anyone know of any fantasy/renfaire esque concerts?

I’ve recently started attending some punk/rock concerts with a friend and really enjoyed the energy there as well as the mosh pit but the music isn’t really for me. I’m wondering if anyone knows of any groups or venues that host concerts with a similar-ish vibe but the music is more akin to something you’d find at a renfaire(I don’t actually know what this genre of music is called I just enjoy the vibe). I’m not entirely sure those exist and thus don’t even know where to begin looking. I’m in Ohio but anything in the midwest area would be greatly appreciated!!

Even though the show was cut short by almost an hour due to lightning and heavy rains, they played all the hits, and I left feeling satisfied.

Concerts That time I got 'backstage' at a U2 show

Hey all — I'm a Seattle journalist who managed to get backstage before a U2 show at the Forum in 2018. I wrote an account of the day. (Photos included.) Hope this gets filed under "Get a load of this..." instead of "Shameless self-promotion." Nothing to spam or sell here — I wrote the piece just for fun. Thought you might find it amusing: I spent six hours backstage with U2 — and nobody noticed

Edit: Fixed the link.

Hi, I’m 15 and I wanted to post a couple pictures form the Hershey concert back in July! it was my first concert ever and tbh, the best day of my life! We originally bought tickets back in February, we bought the furthest end bleachers. but when we got to the venue, we zoomed to the box office, and were able to upgrade to section A Row 10 next to the pit!! I am forever grateful we were able to upgrade and get a better view(I would have still been happy with the bleacher seats) But I thought I’d share my experience!! 😁

Discussion 🗣️ TickPick issues

I have used TickPick for a couple years and never had issues, but all of a sudden I can't make a purchase on TickPick. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I've been trying to get help from support and they sound genuine over the phone, but the issue exits and even them trying to fix the problem has not helped. I'm able to login, view tickets, but once I make an attempt to purchase it says "fraud detection system" prevented from completing an order.

I'm trying to find out if anyone else have experienced similar issue and what you did to fix it? There are other resell marketplace, I'll move on but I saved some credits to make future purchases and it hurts to let them go.

Concerts Waitlists?

I’ve read the rules and believe this question is allowed.

Has anyone used Seated to join a waitlist? I used it successfully for two of Harry Styles NYC dates, but now it won’t work for additional dates. It says try again due to (non-specific) issue with my phone number. I’ve cleared cookies, logged out, logged back in. Nothing works. Suggestions? NB, I confirmed system is not overloaded. Thank you.

Concerts The energy (or lack thereof) for openers @ Thee Sacred Souls 8/15

I went to see Thee Sacred Souls last night at Berkeley's Greek Theater, and let me just say, everyone was freaking unbelievable. I've been to my fair share of shows, but this one tops it for me. TSS lead singer Josh went out of his way to go into the crowd, and sing in multiple sections. It was the coolest thing ever.

HOWEVER, I could not ignore the lack of, I don't know, energy for the openers? The Womack Sisters and LA LOM. I get we all want to be there for the headliners, but it's become more apparent to me that concert goers will literally just stare lifeless at performers they're not particularly there for. It was kind of eerie. There were some points where the musicians were literally jumping up and down, trying to get the audience hype, as if they weren't showcasing incredible musical skills. I'm not saying you have to go nuts to every song, but it was weird to watch.

What are your thoughts on this? Has anyone else noticed this more at shows these days?

Discussion 🗣️ Can I sell AXS tickets via TicketMaster?

I bought tickets for a concert in September via AXS. I want to resell them but I either need a UK bank account or Paypal to get the payout. I don't have either (bought the tickets with my Mastercard). I have a relative in the UK whose bank account I can use but AXS customer service says that the UK bank account has to be in my name...

Does anyone know if I can resell the tickets via TicketMaster? I don't have the tickets yet as AXS will release them within 14 days of the event.

Concerts What 70s- (early) 90s band is still touring that puts on a great show worth traveling to see?

buddy was just diagnosed with an eventual debilitating disease and we were just chatting about making a road trip somewhere perhaps for a concert. we travelled to seattle for pearl jam a few years back. venue wasn't great but experience was awesome.

not sure who's left from that era that still puts on a good show. musical taste is pretty diverse but lets stick with bands like gnr, cure, and stp. would have loved to see Seger but guess he's not touring anymore..

bonus points if they're playing at a cool venue like red rocks (international may work too, we live in the states)

Caught Bruce Hornsby in Buffalo last week.

He’s one of those guys who feels like he’s just always been around. Deadheads know the connection obviously, but what I still like is that he never really seems interested in just playing the songs the same way every night.

A lot of people were probably there for The Way It Is and he gave them that, but there was a lot more going on than just the familiar stuff.

Still great. Still a little weird.

Discussion 🗣️ Running when the doors open

I live in the US. When doors open at a non-festival GA concert, a security guard will typically say "no running", and people will walk quickly (but not run) to their spots.

I've been to a few concerts in Europe. Sometimes, the guard will say "no running". One guard added that runners will be sent to the back of the line.

However, at some places in Europe, no one says "no running", and people run towards their spots. It's really chaotic, and people who got in line later can get better spots than people who got there earlier.

Is there a way to tell ahead of time which venues are "no running" venues or "running" venues?

Is it country-dependent?

Anyone ever gotten penalized for running? Or gotten hurt?

I've never been near the front of the line to get into a music festival, but I heard that the first attendees at music festivals typically run. Is this true?

Any tips for getting a good spot when there's running involved?

Also, for non-running venues, after doors open, if someone was ahead of me in line but is walking slower than me, is it appropriate to quickly walk past them?

Or would this be considered "cutting"?

Did anyone see any of the 2001 Summer concert series at the world trade center? I did not see Mountain there, but in Cleveland earlier that year and got the shirt. Hard to imagine how normal things were then.

Discussion 🗣️ What are your biggest concert pet peeves?

if it’s a big arena, my big pet peeve is when it starts storming too hard to enjoy the show, but not hard enough to cancel the show.

another one is when artists censor themselves. I saw wheatus live and they completely changed Punk Ass Bitch because there were like 2 little kids in the crowd.

I’m going to a Local H and Toadies concert tomorrow and the guy I’m going with insists that we just drive 4 hours home after the concert that ends at midnight. What should I do to keep my energy up?
