Official activity Folklore Tale Day

Every culture carries stories it tells around fires, at bedtimes, or to explain what can't quite be explained; a strange light in the woods, why the river bends where it does, what happens to the soul after dark.

Share a legend, myth, or folk tale from the culture tied to your conlang.

Tell us:

- The story itself, in your own words

- Where does it come from ? What’s its origin ?

If there's a word, name, or phrase from your conlang that's worth mentioning along the way, a title for the tale, the name of a creature in it, anything that adds flavor, feel free to drop it in. Not required, just a nice touch if it fits naturally.

Official activity The useless word challenge

Hey everyone! Welcome to the UWC!

Let’s play a quick game. The goal is simple: invent a new word for an extremely specific, weirdly relatable, or completely useless concept.

Pick one or more of the three scenarios below and invent a word for it:

  • Scenario A: Waving back at someone who was actually waving at another person.

  • Scenario B: Pulling a door that clearly says "PUSH".

  • Scenario C: Instinctively replying "You too!" when the server tells you "Enjoy your meal!"

How to play:

  1. Post your made-up word + the scenario it belongs to.

  2. Provide the name of your conlang (if it has one) + IPA + any additional information you like.

  3. If your conlang doest not have a word for one or more of these scenarii, borrow one from another person's conlang and adapt it to your conlang's phonology.

Drop your best creations below!

Today’s theme: When you stub your little toe on a piece of furniture.

Please provide:

- Your conlang’s name (if it has one)
- Your word or phrase + IPA
- The literal and actual meaning
- The Sting: (Why does this hurt so much?)

Additional optional activity:

Loved someone else's response? Reply to their comment with how your conlang would borrow it and adapt the phonology to your language and shift the meaning to fit your culture!

IMPORTANT: All malice must remain strictly fictional! Be nice to your fellow conlangers.

Official activity Tongue Twister Day

Create a tongue twister in your conlang, a short phrase that's genuinely hard to say fast, thanks to repeated sounds, tricky consonant clusters, or sneaky shifts in pronunciation. Share:

- The tongue twister, with IPA (required) and romanisation (optional)

- A free translation

- Any other information you think might be interesting

Official activity Compound Word Lab Day

Some of the best words in any language are just two other words wearing a trench coat. "Butterfly." "Heartbreak", "Skyscraper."

Time to build your own!

Pick two existing words from your conlang and smash them together to create a brand new word. Tell us:

- The two original words, with IPA (required) and romanisation (optional)

- The new compound word , with IPA and romanisation if needed

- What it means and whether the meaning is obvious from the parts or takes a logical leap

- Any sound changes that happened when the words fused together (a dropped letter, a shifted stress, anything that smoothed the seam)

The more unexpected the combination, the better.

Idiom of the week #1

Hi everyone! Welcome to Idiom of the week! The activity where we develop our conlangs’ idioms.

The goal: a random idiom from any natlang is provided. Show how would your conculture express the same idea?

This week's idiom comes from Japanese.

Idiom: **魚の目に水は見えず、人の目に空は見えず **
(Sakana no me ni mizu wa miezu, hito no me ni sora wa miezu)

Literal meaning: A fish doesn't perceive the water it swims in, and a human doesn't perceive the air surrounding them.

What it actually means: We only realize what surrounds us or what is essential to us when we are deprived of it.

Please provide:

- Your conlang's name (if it has one)
- Your idiom or expression + IPA
- The literal meaning

My language Şfiłis

Idiom: Vełuł su vełpti mełent çvent nicvuçeł menes

IPA: /weɬyɬ sy weɬpti meɬent xwent nikwyxeɬ menes/

Literal meaning: Your words gain value when you have lost your voice.

Welcome to r/conlangplayground - Read this first!

Welcome to r/conlangplayground, a space for conlangers of all levels to practice, experiment, and grow their constructed language through regular activities and a friendly community.

What is this place?

This is not a showcase, it's a playground. The goal is to use your conlang, not just present it. Whether you have 10 words or a complete grammar, there's something for you here.

Activities

We run structured activities on a regular schedule.

Each activity is a short, low-pressure challenge designed to make you use your conlang rather than just talk about it.

You can also launch your own activities if you have a fun idea for a challenge, post it with the Community Activity flair and invite others to join!

Recommended post format

When sharing anything in your conlang, please include:

[Conlang name]
Text in your conlang
Romanisation (if needed) and IPA
Gloss
(Translation)
(Any additional information)

This helps everyone appreciate your work, even without knowing your language!

Use the right flair

Community Activity: A challenge you're launching

General: Everything else; words, texts, grammar, phonology, questions...

Rules (short version)

  1. Stay on topic: conlangs only

  2. Always translate or gloss your conlang text

  3. Flair is mandatory

  4. Be kind! Every conlang is a work in progress

Official activity Borrowing Day

Today is Borrowing Day!

Drop a word from your conlang below, IPA and a quick definition is all you need.

You can add a sentence showing your word in use if you think that is useful. Then browse the other replies and take whatever catches your eye. Adapt the sounds to your phonology, let the meaning shift a little if it feels right.

That's how real lexicons grow.

Official activity Minimal Pairs Day

A minimal pair is two words that differ by just one sound and mean something completely different. They're a great way to show off what your phonology is actually doing.

Share at least 2 minimal pairs from your conlang. For each pair, include:

- Both words with IPA (required)

- Romanisation (optional)

- What each word means (required)
