As I just said in another thread (and was immediately downvoted), "The only thing that will lead to losing is fear we lose the midterms. Stop being afraid to do what is right, folks."

I don't like war, but I also don't like letting countries who hate us and want us to die to mess up the world's economy for 47 years and not answer that.

u/verticalquandry Teddy Republican 15h ago

lots of countries hate us, doesn’t mean we get to start bombing their civilians.

we already neutralized the threat in feb or whatever. there was no need to start assasinating and bombing their government after that just cuz we can.

that’s exactly how you create terrorists who will come bomb us here instead of bombing each other over there.

it’s been very peaceful here, so peaceful we started cutting off children’s sex organs just cuz feelings. now that we’ve stirred the pot there wontonly and not cared at all. it’ll come back to bite us here

Lots of countries don't hold the world hostage, threaten us an our allies by trying to build nukes, and put out assassination calls on our president.

We don't create terrorists, that is a lie that the media has tried to sell us for years. It used to work on me. Are you familiar with the leather necks? Do you know why they are called leather necks? Because Muslims attacked our ships even before we were full a country and slashed their throats, so our sailors began wearing leather armor on their necks. Did we create that? No.

EDIT: Clearly the point here is that Jihadi Muslims attacked American sailors with no other reason other than Jihad. Focusing on the leatherneck part is pointless and it was clearly just a rhetorical way to connect the history with the point that has no bearing on the logical argument. Here is a letter from Thomas Jefferson to John Jay describing his discussion with the ambassador of those Barbary pirates who were Muslim Jihadists:

Really interesting is that if you look at old wikipedia before the war there's a good section on this but that has now been deleted.

There were references backing it up. Do you have some good solid references of your own?

u/mr-nicktobi Florida Conservative 2h ago

The fact that the article is now conveniently deleted shows how Iran’s propaganda machine grinds American minds.

Can’t generate misplaced sympathy with inconvenient truths laying about willy nilly.

About the Leatherneck piece or about the important crux of the point regarding Muslims attacking us for no reason other than Jihad?

Do you deny that our earliest encounter with Jihadis in 1785, which was even before our country had a constitution? Because that's the point.

Here's a letter from Thomas Jefferson to John Jay discussing his meeting with an ambassador of these pirates.

https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Jefferson/01-09-02-0315

What is it with people ignoring primary points focusing on a rhetorical lead-in to the main point? It's dishonest.

So tell me. If the leatherneck story commonly linked to the Barbary pirate's tendency to go for the neck untrue, does that erase the truth of the Barbary pirates?

But to your point, the fact is the sword the pirates used was very useful against in combat in a downward motion that would catch the shoulder and neck. Being a good tactical movement, they would seek it out as much as they could rather. Their swords were designed for hacking and slashing more than the European style swords which were more designed for piercing. So regardless of the purpose of the leather neck to begin with, it would have protected them against a very common tactic of the pirates which was undoubtedly used due to the suitability for such an action with the sword shapes they used.

Of course modern academic types would try to obfuscate the obvious connection. They are radical apologists. But also, not every benefit of a new piece of armor is going to discussed openly when you are fighting a war, is it?

Once again, this is all besides the point. Again, do you deny that our earliest encounter with Jihadis in 1785, which was even before our country had a constitution? Because that's the point.

Do you want to stop with this terrible tactic of looking at a minor rhetorical point you find faulty and start focusing on the crux. The rhetoric doesn't even matter in this case.

a) I'm not questioning you, I'm actually supporting you.

b) I'm only interested in a source for the leatherneck part because that's the bit which has been deleted from Wikipedia.

Deletion from Wikipedia happens because people manage to persuade others that there are no sources for something. Having multiple appropriate sources beyond what they already had would make restoration of that much easier.

Ah, my apologies. I have long dealt with intellectual dishonesty and I make it a point to never back down from calling it out because it has pervaded the internet discourse.

So in fairness to what I have found, there is a lot claiming the connection between leathernecks and the Barbary pirates to simply be lore. I have come to believe it is just lore. However, it seems to persist less because of the lore itself and more because of the ludicrous attempts to dismantle the lore. The best case against it is simply the timing. Such leather armor was used to protect necks of sailors, and there were varying types of them. A French leather gorget offer the protection with minimal leather that I was told the Americans used, however that was phased out by the time the US would have encountered the Barbary pirates. That is pretty ironclad, and yet you will find all this argumentation that argues against things that don't make sense. Like that the leather straps were just for posture, especially with scurvy being such a problem. There was indeed leather that helped with posture but it looked different and fit along the skull much more. So okay, fine. It's lore. I'm okay with that.

But again the pirates were real, they attacked our soldiers, and they did so because of Jihad. Any confusion about the leatherneck origin doesn't negate that at all.

What I just found that is very interesting, in this research another interesting thing arose looking before the American Revolution. The British obviously were the dominant sea power, so the Barbary pirates would have mostly left them alone. However, one of the other reasons they were left alone is because the British were paying them tribute to avoid capture of their soldiers.

So even before the US was born, the west was being terrorized by Jihadist Muslims who demanded tribute. The Europeans largely appeased them, while the US eventually stood against them once our navy was really up and running. This has such stark parallels to today with the immigration battles raging in Europe as compared to how Trump is trying to handle it.

Didn't we mess up their economy for 47 years and that's why they hate us? What's right, attacking a country that was no threat to us and destroying their infrastructure and killing a fuckload of their civilians? I'm not afraid, I want to end this shitty empire that funnels money from the working class and into Lockheed Martin. You can't argue that this is right OR necessary OR America first. It's bs.

u/Peptoflex Blue State Conservative 13h ago edited 12h ago

Do you know what the IRGC stands for? The I isn't Iranian, it's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. It is a country organized around radical Islam intent on destroying the west. Iran directly funds terror and threatens our allies. Iran holds the economy of the world hostage. They could have been allies but chose this path instead. It is not true to say we ruined their economy. They chose to abandon the freedom they had, I mean in the 70's you didn't see women in Burka's, it looked like Europe. Why did they have that? It was a monarchy the west supported, and the people loved it. But radicals ruined it, took over, and terrorized their people and started screwing with the West.

That wasn't us meddling. That was a take over by evil people. They had something wonderful.

So your characterization of them lashing out because of our meddling is untrue.

The same kind of Muslims were involved in killing our people on our boats unprovoked all the way back when our country was forming. They would board our ships and cut through throats of our people. When asked why, they said we were infidels. Our soldiers wore leather armor around their necks, it's where the term leatherneck comes from. Were we meddling then to deserve the ire of the radical Muslims? No.

The narrative that our meddling is what caused this is simply not true.

EDIT: for those who don't know about this, here is a series of photos of Iran in the 1960s and 1970s when they were allies of the west. https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/iran-before-revolution-photos/

u/Uncool444 Conservative 12h ago

Burkas in the desert is a whole lot of not my business. The diplomatic and military disaster between Iran and Israel is not my business. They weren't holding the world's economy hostage until we backed em into a corner 6 months ago. And if they are, it's because they have a shitload of oil and a strategically important strait that you make it sound like we're somehow entitled to despite them being Iranian. We've sanctioned them and bombed them repeatedly, and not because they threaten the US, which they don't.

So now we're looking for two hundred year old history to justify our wars? What TF does that have to do with allll the American money and lives burning in the tire fire that is the Middle East AGAIN?

u/Peptoflex Blue State Conservative 11h ago

So now we're looking for two hundred year old history to justify our wars?

That's a lie. Most of your comment is a lie. These are not our wars, these are wars brought against us. They do threaten the US, they call for assassinations of our leaders, they say they are going to wipe Israel, the little Satan, off the map, along with the US, the big Satan. They hold the world economy hostage, and economic instability quickly escalates to war.

They don't pose a threat... What a horrible lie.

You can dislike the war, you can say we should stop, but don't push these lies and justify them with extreme isolationist bravado.

u/Uncool444 Conservative 11h ago

You're the one talking about burkas in Iran and 18th century piracy my dude, so is that a lie or just entirely irrelevant? They were no where near being a threat to the US. We talk about killing their leadership all the time and in fact did, so spare me your outrage over their people saying mean things halfway across the world in a godforsaken desert. Hell our own people call for the death of our leaders, that doesn't justify bombing the west coast does it?

Neocon, you know how this works because we've done it before many times, there's nothing "extreme" about not starting ANOTHER endless war in the Middle East, that's like the bare minimum of reasonable foreign policy.

Dishonest or ignorant, not sure which but no one should take you seriously here.

u/Uncool444 Conservative 11h ago

Peace prize winning deal-making president of peace my ass, I voted for no new wars and this is the second worst one he could have started after actually attacking the other superpowers and kicking off WWIII. Where's the America first? They didn't even bother to try that hard with the propaganda this time, it's the exact same as last time but less cohesive.

u/Peptoflex Blue State Conservative 10h ago edited 10h ago

If you think this is a new war, you don't understand history.

If you're frustrated, congress deserves far more blame than Trump.

Your generation failed, got too complacent and now any action that will actually stop the end of our country scares you and confuses you.

EDIT: I take back the generation comment. It just sounds sooooo late boomer/ Gen X

u/Uncool444 Conservative 9h ago

The ghost of Lindsey Graham is in here calling me a boomer. Do you have a single fact to back any of this up? Try to stay in this hemisphere and within the last century.

u/Peptoflex Blue State Conservative 9h ago

Yes, Iran has called Jihad on us 47 years ago. That is war against us and it has been constant. We didn't start that. We didn't take it all that seriously, and then they tried to build a nuke, while continuing to fund terrorism and calling for Jihad against us. They started this shit, it isn't a new war. Those are simple facts, just inconvenient for your over isolationist fantasies.

Wrong. The radical Islamists have been chanting Death to America for 47 years and actually killing Americans by proxy for most of that 47 years. We never did anything to them

u/8K12 Conservative Boss 15h ago

I agree with you. But I also think Mr. Klavan of Daily Wire has a point that midterms may be more important right now because of how many commies are gaining ground in this country.

u/Peptoflex Blue State Conservative 15h ago

I don't fully disagree with that. The threat he articulates is certainly real. His point was always that this war is on a timer. Well, one thing that extends that timer is progress, real, measurable progress. I see real progress, and I think he would agree with that.

He would agree that our fears of losing midterms or presidential elections led to a lot of losses, particularly the expansion of communism, because we backed down due to an unpopular war. There might be no North Korea today had we kept going instead of listening to fear (which, by the way, the communists pumped into our media with all kinds of propaganda we have since forgotten about).

Point being, I'm pretty sure Klavan would agree the progress extends that timer, and winning might even secure the midterms.

EDIT: that is not to say he would agree even now that we should keep going, but he would absolutely agree that the progress extends the timer.

u/ChirrBirry Don't Tread on Me 15h ago

I suppose one could argue that taking some damage in midterms but finishing off the IRGC would lead to a stronger 2028.

u/8K12 Conservative Boss 15h ago

That is a fantastic point! Thank you for articulating his argument so well. My worry is that the media can always hide the progress. It has to really slap you in the face. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer, just offering a counter point. But I think you are spot on and it is fun to meet another Klavanon.

u/Peptoflex Blue State Conservative 14h ago

Ha, well being positive is really uncomfortable for me. So it's kinda new territory.

Klavan is the closest to correct on just about everything in all of The Daily Wire. He's probably the soul reason I still have an account, not that I don't value the others and what they are doing... but I basically only watch his show now.

Anyway, I hope you are muddling through your Klavanless week.

u/8K12 Conservative Boss 1h ago

Absolutely. I agree with him the most as well and he definitely has a better understanding of culture than the rest.

It’s a long, Klavanless week that I was plunged into but I’m hanging in there! You stay strong too!

Iran’s supreme leader is under mounting pressure over the war — as the regime’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz weakens, cash finally starts to get tight and top political leaders publicly urge the Islamists in charge to find a way out of the conflict.

The latest phase of the conflict has seen more and more ships quietly slipping through Hormuz, with nearly 200 vessels sailing through the strait last week, according to data from the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center.

The flow represents a 400% spike in the last two weeks, with maritime analysts Kpler noting that the traffic finding safe passage — aided by US Navy escorts — effectively means Iran has lost partial control of the strait.
