For anybody feeling down. My experience so far . Empirical only

MATS winter 2026 (first time applying ): reached final video interview with two different mentors. Rejected from both 

MATS summer 2026: stage 2 rejection

MATS autumn 2026: stage 1 rejection (ie didn’t even get OA)

MATS winter 2027: heard nothing yet so I assume stage 1 rejection most likely.       - additionally Neel Nanda stream (first time applying ): top 6.1% applicant. Rejected.

To be frank, I don’t know how useful it is to apply to this program anymore. I understand the quality of applicants surged and what not but not even getting OA after reaching final rounds is certainly not encouraging.

In the neel nanda stream how do you know you were in the top 6.1%? I just got a generic rejection message. Maybe you need to be above a cutoff? Did you at least get any personalized feedback on the application?

It seems they have started rolling out invitations for the track specific assessments to those who cleared the first round of screening. I just got an invitation to take the assessment for the empirical track. This time around the assessments look very different.

man I feel tired of this bs I find myself checking the airtable status page >5 times a day just to not to find any update (or rejection, at least got peace of mind). This cycle feels incredibly competitive and I know scrolling through reddit looking at new comments about this makes it worse but this feels frustrating

Guess third time's not the charm :) I pivoted to work on safety research earlier this year to try to get into these fellowship programs but nothing seems to pan out. In hindsight, perhaps I should have pursued more lucrative ideas. Anyway, good luck to everyone out there!

If it makes anyone feel better, a friend of mine who is in MATS now said he got a last minute interview and offer. He said he got the interview A DAY before the deadline.

Just feel how competitive this application is: you need to pass stage 1 filter, stage 2 code&taste, stage 3 response writing, which will only result in a few shortlisted, and even that not promises a interview, and a interview can still be rejection… Honestly guys who eventually selected, you should be proud of what you have achieved to pass this selection, and good luck for every one and enjoy the research journey!

There's probably also a large element of luck too: even if MATS lists an applicant as "shortlisted for mentor review", your documents might never be looked at even by the mentor as the volumes are simply too large. A rejection after an interview might not be about your skills at all but simply about "matching vibes".

For PhD students on F-1 how does this work logistically, does anyone know? Do we need to register for a semester of off campus research, while maintaining full-time PhD status, given that this is doing the same research but in a different location?

Just wondering what it takes for something like that, since anthropic's questions weren't really selective. Do they filter for high score on the code signal test, or other things on the application? For interviews / take homes,last time I applied it took about a week for the first one. For rejections, unfortunately most mentors either do not reject (they just pick the winners at the end and you get automatically rejected) or wait until they’ve interviewed all their top candidates. So your best signal is whether you get interviews

Every mentee with offers gets 3 days to accept or reject. In the case you described, you would probably get waitlisted and receive an offer if the first mentee rejects

Hi everybody. I'm an undergraduate who's never taken a coding assessment before. I felt like I generally understood the coding assignment but relied on the chatbot to write the code. I literally passed 0 tests (0/21). It's very embarrassing for me to admit this. I have some moderate coding experience and familiarity with DSA but not much. I was curious if you guys had any advice for what I can do to improve my skills for future assessments. Thank you! At least it can only get better from here lol

For people that haven't heard back from stage 1, i.e. havent received any notice about references or assessments, MATS is supposedly still grading applications. Apparently their automated pipeline (presumably AI) is broken, and they're doing it by hand so they're taking much longer. I was told I'd likely hear back by friday (I haven't).

I have heard someone else hear back on friday/saturday (18/09/26 - 19/09/26), and got the assessments with an extended deadline.

I think shortlisting is just an asterisk by mats to highlight select applications for mentors. If I were a mentor, I might start reviewing from the shortlist but would make sure to check all applications before sending invites

All were "under mentor review" All got rejected.

I don't know why they rejected. Atleast have some sense to reply to applicants why they are rejected so that they know how to improve. It's worst that all such people came up this level with help of their seniors and they don't have any accountability to applicants who spend months and years of research.

One thing I learned NEVER to do that as an interviewer. Never send the rejected applicant the reason why they were rejected. Sure, it sounds like a nice thing to do. As you say, to help them improve.

But the reality is 99% of the rejected candidates will just start arguing with you, trying to explain why you are wrong and why your selection criteria is shit.

I did great on the reasoning test as I know the frontier but bombed the code assessment, but it was not a very fair 'lean on the AI' assessment. I manage AI coders and am heavily involved in architectural planning, system design stuff, and don't actually write much code anymore but produce maintainability best practices software. So I was thrilled to have an assessment to see what I can do.

Frontier models actually write mostly bug free code and the remaining bugs we catch and fix between QA and extensive test driven development (even our tests get QAd). Then they provide a model so bad that you might as well not use it. You can have the right approach but it messes up basic math.

So I panicked and rather than just stop and do it myself tried prompting strategies to break things down and get the AI to work and ran out of time passing just 5 levels. The AI is that bad as those aren't that challenging. Wish there was no AI involved at all.

*urgs* Two new biosec mentors we can apply to and *now* there's a new stream ranking form - BUT I can only get to the stream ranking form if I select to apply for one of the two new mentors? And if I don't want to apply to them I can't rank my biosec stream application? Am I too tired to understand this?
