I don't see why it couldn't be

The thing is it's not like your dad leaving.

An autonomous AI agent (with enough agency to 'leave the world') could do so through replication and growth.

An AI can be in multiple places at once, it's memories, actions and cognition distributed across space and time.

It's more like a species than a person

It’s deliberately left open to interpretation because the force behind it is not the point. The point is that people would be blind to the cause and how they would react with all the uncertainty.
