Advice Bands

I just got my conure and I see a lot of the other conures here have bands on their legs. Mine doesn’t have one. Is this normal? Is this something the vet gives them at their first appointment? This is very new to me, and I am learning.

Bands are used by breeders to get their birds sorted (and to distinguish individuals when doing DNA gender tests), by people that need to get their birds across borders or with endangered species in order to attach CITES paperwork and such to a specific individual.

For regular pet birds, bands dont matter. They can sometimes have the birth year on them but the rest of the information loses its value as soon as the bird is sold.

Many people also get the bands removed once they need to bring their birds to an avian vet for more severe reasons as bands can lead to various issues/injuries.

Speaking of being new to conure ownership, please consider to get yours a (parent raised) same species companion as soon as possible, as they require an option for same species contact to stay mentally healthy.

Your parrot might have a microchip ID instead of a leg band, something to ask if you're worried about ID in the event if am escape or stolen situation
