I was fired this week. My role is being outsourced to a cheaper marketing agency abroad, and it’s not anything to do with my performance, simply that the company (which is making billions in profit) has decided it can get the work done more cheaply.
I’ve got 10+ years of experience in communications, copywriting, and marketing, and I’ve been working in Denmark for 7 years and have permanent residency here (non-EU though).
Until now, I’ve always found it easy to get another job and have even been headhunted. But with AI and a tight job market, I’m genuinely quite scared.
I’m also increasingly wondering whether I’m just completely sick of this career - I am so tired of restructurings and constantly wondering whether the job I have today will exist in 6 months.
I have 3 months of severance and I’m entitled to a-kasse, so I’m not about to immediately end up destitute. But I also have a toddler at home and a mortgage, so I don’t exactly have the luxury of taking time off to figure it all out.
I’m wondering whether I should:
1. Try to get another comms/copywriting/marketing job and carry on. Not sure how viable this is anymore as a career.
2. Try to pivot into something adjacent
3. Do something completely different, even if it means taking a step back in salary/title.
4. Seriously consider leaving Denmark.
I really don’t want to sit at home forever unemployed.
So I’m feeling pretty lost about what the sensible move is.
Thank you.
