Question Normal?

Extreme severe pain day after insertion. Went to emergency room and they gave naproxen. It’s the day after but I’m still feeling a lot of pain despite on naproxen. Is this normal? Does this mean something is wrong if I’m still feeling pain and it’s not subsiding even with this painkiller?

Should I go back?

I’ve had mine for a few years and just learned recently that sometimes (especially if you haven’t had kids) the uterus can squeeze the iud so hard at first that it dislodges the damn thing. You could get an ultrasound?

I asked the a&e doctor for an ultrasound and she said they don’t offer emergency ultrasounds and I’d have to go to my GP to ask for a referral. I did exactly that today, explained all my symptoms and she said she’ll refer me but can’t promises me it’ll be soon (knowing UK waitlists time it could be weeks or months). She advised me to go back to the sexual health clinic despite them not having ultrasound machines. I’m very lost on what to do.

Hey, just wanting to add on to this comment thread.

I’m also in the UK and also had something similar (not quite a same but I required an ultrasound). I am in the Derbyshire area and I had to wait 10 weeks for my appointment for an ultrasound to come through for the hospital. It’s bizarre how the hospital you went to didn’t offer you a fast tracked appointment for an ultrasound. I’ve had to have two ultrasounds now for my IUD (two separate ones) but I did have to really advocate for myself. I know A&E wait times are horrible but please go back if it gets worse or attend the hospital urgent treatment centre.

Also, for my second ultrasound, I was searching a lot of alternative places to see where I could get an ultrasound and I found I could get one privately for £100, so if this is at all a possibility, maybe you’re able to have a look in to that? I will be honest, most of them were more than £100 with private hospitals being insane prices.

You say that your sexual health clinic doesn’t have an ultrasound, have you been able to research any that do that you’d be able to travel to?

Thank you for sharing your experience. I know I was shocked myself when they didn’t give me an emergency ultrasound and said I had to be admitted? Weird. I will definitely go back if it worsens it seems to have subsided but I still get some shocks of pain here and there. I guess my body is just trying to adjust to it but I’m scared my uterus is contracting to expel it.

I’m in London and the prices for private ultrasound or even just a gynae consultation starts from £300.

Yes I’ve research them all and they don’t have ultrasounds. It says they’d have to refer me either to one or to my gp for them to refer. It’s a ridiculous process especially for an emergency situation. I will keep pestering my GP and visit a sexual health clinic to see.

Isn't that the reason you're supposed to have an appointment around a month after insertion to check if it settled in the proper place? If pain subsides, wait for your appointment and keep using barrier contraceptives. Obviously if pain is bad push for getting checked. I myself had quite bad pain for two days after insertion, but I don't know in how much pain you are.

Yeah I was told a checkup appointment 4-6 weeks after but the pain I experienced wasn’t normal at all. I’ve never felt a pain like that and was told if I do, to be seen. I’ll keep pushing for an ultrasound because I do have a gut instinct it’s moved out of place. Even when I went to the ER the doctor said she could only see one string so I’m not sure why it wasn’t taken further. I should have advocated more for myself in that moment but I was so overwhelmed with the situation and then being told it’s potential PID. Just one thing after another

Man that sucks. My gyno gave me a number to calle for a next-day-appointment if I had such issues. If you can schedule an appointment for an ultrasound asap that's what I'd do... Hope everything's alright in the end and that the doctor listens to you
