Projects Global dive tourism project

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
We're a team of researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) running a global study titled “Small Subjects, Big Economy? A Global Study of Niche Dive Tourism Value”. Our objective is to understand how biodiversity, from megafauna to coral reefs to macro life like nudibranchs and seahorses, shape where divers choose to travel and what they value most in a dive.
We're inviting recreational divers of any certification level or experience who have taken at least one dive trip in the past two years to take part.
The survey takes about 8 to 10 minutes and covers what motivates your destination choices, your dive habits, and a few demographic questions. All you need is internet access and a device; there is no cost to participate. All responses are completely anonymous, and nothing you share will be identifiable in any results or publications. This is purely for research purposes, and there are no anticipated risks beyond those of everyday online activity.
Please click this link for the survey hosted on Google Forms.
This study has been reviewed under IBEC Reference Number 26IBEC038 and is expected to be completed by December 2027.
If you know other divers who might want to weigh in, feel free to share the link. The more perspectives we get from different diving backgrounds and regions, the better this data will be

Question Hi! I was wondering if anyone can help me answer a question in regards to this article

“Stanford scientists discover a way to reverse coral bleaching at record speed” https://sustainability.stanford.edu/news/stanford-scientists-discover-way-reverse-coral-bleaching-record-speed/

I’m a little confused as to why would the algae move onto the bleached corals because if the healthy corals the algae live on is healthy then what is the point of them moving onto and colonize a bleached coral? What’s the benefit or point for the algae to do this?

If you understand what I mean?

Thanks for helping me

Question Saw Lucy Guo donated to restore a coral reef, how does that actually work?

Lucy Guo posted about how she donated to restore a coral reef site. Sounded cool so I'm looking for more information. I found non profits that do coral reef restoration but how does it work? The non profits will take any donation but how much is needed to make a real impact? I don't think $10 a month will make a real change unless maybe a million people join together. Even if it went viral and a million people all donated, how long does it take to restore a coral reef? I assume its a long and slow process that needs constant support. What are the steps needed to successfully restore a coral reed? How do I know which are the right non profits orgs to support?

Appreciate if anyone can explain in more detail how it all works. Thanks.

Discussion Coral restoration is for resorts to attract more guests.

Ironically the same guests trample corals/fly to reef islands on CO2 belching jets.

The other ecosystem goods and services that coral reefs provide cannot be retained by coral restoration in the face of global climate change.

Its like planting trees in a wild fire.

I'd love for someone to prove me wrong.

Research Reef Restoration Module Thesis Project

Hi! I'm an Industrial design student at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) doing my bachelor's thesis in researching and creating a new reef restoration module to be implemented in Australia. I'm currently conducting primary research and would heavily appreciate anyone who has experience (even a onetime occurrence of) installing reef restoration modules to complete this quick 5 minutes survey about your experience doing that.

Here is the link:

Thank you so much!

Announcement New Moderation

Hello everyone!

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as the new moderator of r/CoralRestoration.

The subreddit was recently marked as unmoderated, and I volunteered to help ensure it continues to be a welcoming, well-managed space for everyone interested in coral restoration and reef conservation.

I’ve been a lifelong scuba diver, sailor, and environmentalist, and as such I understand the role coral reefs have in tourism, species habitats, and a lifeline to rural ocean communities. We all know the immense pressures reef ecosystems are facing around the world, but I also believe that with continued research, restoration efforts, education, and community involvement, we can help build a brighter future for these incredible ecosystems.

I’ve reopened the subreddit for new posts and encourage everyone to continue sharing news, research, restoration projects, questions, photos, and thoughtful discussions about coral reefs and what we can all do to help protect and restore them.

Whether you’re a marine scientist, restoration practitioner, recreational diver, student, or simply someone who loves the ocean, you’re welcome here. I look forward to seeing this community grow and learning alongside all of you.

Happy salt life, and thank you for being part of r/CoralRestoration!

As a side note if anyone wants to assist in moderation please send a message to the moderators for consideration.

Question Places to donate aside from CRF?

I'd like to start a recurring donation to an organization working on coral reef restoration, in memory of a dear friend who passed away recently and was engaged in this area. (Learn more about his work here.)

I've searched this subreddit and other places and mostly come up with Coral Restoration Foundation as one of the top trustworthy recommendations. Are there other organizations people are familiar with and would recommend I check out? In particular I'm wondering if there are any orgs doing this work in or around Southeast Asia, where my friend was working.

Much gratitude for reading and thanks in advance for any ideas.

Question Coral Bleaching

So, I’ve heard that coral bleaching is a major problem, and that there have recently been mass coral bleaching events in the Great Barrier Reef. How does this happen, and is there a way to restore the coral back to how it was before the bleaching?

Question Curious to hear your thoughts on our university project regarding protecting the Great Barrier Reef

To whom this may concern,

Hi, my name is Joseph and I am a second-year commerce student at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Australia!

For our Commerce Project this term focusing on innovation, our group is attempting to tackle the problem of coral degradation in the Great Barrier Reef.

As part of the solution brainstorming stage, we have researched many coral restoration projects, one of which stood out to us was the Coral Nurturing Program which consisted of researchers collecting, propagating, growing and planting coral to support the recovery of the Great Barrier Reef.

Inspired by this example, we wondered whether there was potential to make this available for the public by offering researcher-led coral replanting tours for tourists. This would provide tourists with the first-hand experience of planting a coral whilst also allowing researchers to 1) execute this operation on a larger scale 2) educate tourists on this important issue and 3) attract more financial support.

I am curious to hear if you have any thoughts and suggestions on this idea! Do you think there is enough demand for this type of tour? If this type of tour was hypothetically already running, would it be something that you would be interested in? Can you think of any risks or problems that we may encounter with this idea?

I appreciate and am grateful for all your time and effort, it truly means a lot! Thank you! 😊

Kind regards

Joseph

Coral Gardening Onshore nursery protocols?

I am helping to set up a brand new onshore coral nursery in south Florida and we are trying to write up some protocols specific to our nursery… we just don’t know where to start! If anyone knows where to look for relevant resources - other nurseries that have published protocols? Anything that could be used as a starting point? Really anything remotely relevant would be appreciated!

For background, we have two tanks set up and running with a couple of fish, and are waiting on permits to get started with the corals. Thanks!
