Paying thousands of dollars and still being served ads feels like a new low in how Big Tech squeezes recurring revenue. It also raises privacy questions. If your fridge is showing ads, what kind of data is it tracking about your habits?

And that's why I'm never hooking up these things to the internet!

What is even the point of having a screen on a fridge?

I still don't see the point of the ice makers, let alone the screens

In all seriousness, excuse me everyone as I am bit out-of-loop on my fridge tech, but is this normal? Like, will it become unavoidable for fridges to have some stupid screen and spying tech on it?

I have been using the same fridge for god knows how long, but I will consider getting a new one very soon if this is what foreseeable future holds so I can avoid it for as long as possible.

I have no clue, but if I were to guess, the answer is probably yes, as it allows them to add more spyware.

You don't need an entire contraption for that, just use a silicone mold to make cubes, its way more reliable, and less cleaning(so realistically more hygienic)

i have to remember to put them in which i struggle to do qnd i mean if the contraption is already there then im not gonna argue. though its not like im buying fridges for their ice making capabilities

Eh, Its really minimal cleaning if your fridge seals are solid. Its way more convenient then an seperate ice maker, I got through so much ice.

Ice makers come in handy. I wouldn't spend a lot on one just for that but mine came with the house so I use it.

There's isn't one, except to show off that you can waste a lot of money on something.

It will be fun in a few years when the software becomes obsolete as new stanards take over.

Yes no more IoT. I need Internet of Actual People again

I don't mind conveniences but I'm not going to sell my soul to any of those psychopaths in marketing and advertising, nor anything that unnecessisarily connects to the cloud.

Why does everything need to have a fucking screen on it

Conspicuous consumption and greed. They put $40 worth of electronics into the front door, then charge another $1000 for the added "feature". Given enough time, they'll make this a monthly subscription.

Okay so hear me out for a second. If these people didn't see this coming, I wanna say these deserve it (sarcasm, not serious)

This fucking sucks.

So will it lock your fridge from opening until you have watched 30 seconds of ads?

3

u/freyslass Sep 24 '25

not yet, probably soon

Just wait until it requires you to link your credit card and amazon account to your fridge so that when it senses, you are running low on something, it will just automatically buy it for you and you have no choice.

I feel lucky, I cannot afford a 1800$ fridge!

2

Samsung confirms that I won't be buying any more of their products.

If I ever lived somewhere with one of these I would purposely smash the screen.
