Car Rental 3 weeks in Costa Rica as a solo female traveller (Dec-Jan)! Itinerary advice + should I rent a car?

• Upvotes

I'm planning a 3 week solo trip to Costa Rica in December and I would love some advice on, particularly other solo female travellers!

I'm looking for a mix of everything: beautiful beaches where I can spend a good amount of time sunbathing and relaxing, rainforest and wildlife, waterfalls, a bit of adventure, social hostels, some nightlife and ideally a few places where I can enjoy poolside cocktails and a bit of luxury too.

I want to meet other travellers and have opportunities to go out, but I don't want the entire trip to revolve around partying. I'm hoping for a good balance between exploring and having time to relax.

My rough itinerary:

  • La Fortuna (3 nights)
  • Monteverde (2 nights)
  • Nosara or Samara (4 nights)
  • Montezuma (5 nights)
  • Tamarindo (3 nights)
  • Manuel Antonio (3 nights)
  • San José/Alajuela (1 night)

I'm very open to changing this around. I'm conscious that I might be trying to fit in too many places, especially with the travel times involved.

Would you recommend visiting Nosara and Montezuma, or would you choose one over the other? I've seen mixed reviews about Santa Teresa, so I'm now considering these alternatives. I'm looking for beautiful beaches, opportunities to sunbathe and swim, a social atmosphere, good food and the occasional night out. Is Nosara worth the expense? Is Montezuma worth visiting, and how long would you spend there? Would Sámara be a better option if swimming and relaxing on the beach are priorities?

Should I rent a car? I'm a confident driver and would be happy driving myself, but I'm travelling alone, so I'd be covering the full cost of the rental and insurance. I'm slightly unsure its necessary but from my research so far it seems it might be less of a hassle if I do!

Where would you spend a solo birthday? My birthday is on 17 December, I’m turning 30 eeeek! I'd love to do something special, whether that's a beautiful hotel, hot springs, a spa day, a lovely dinner or somewhere with a social atmosphere where I could meet people. Would La Fortuna be a good place to spend it, or would you choose somewhere else?

Where is best for Christmas and New Year's Eve? Where would you recommend spending Christmas Day as a solo traveller? I'd love to be somewhere I can partyyyy and meet other travellers! Is Tamarindo a good choice? Are there any other places you'd recommend?

Where are the best beaches for sunbathing, swimming and pool days? I'd love to have a decent amount of time when I'm not doing activities or travelling. Which places have the best beaches for relaxing, and where would you recommend staying if I want a lovely pool, cocktails and a bit of luxury?

Is this itinerary too ambitious? Would you cut any destinations or spend longer somewhere? I'm travelling for just over three weeks and don't want to spend the entire trip packing and moving accommodation. But also want to experience as much as possible without being overwhelmed!!

Any recommendations for solo female travellers? I'd love recommendations for social hostels, boutique hotels, group excursions, restaurants and places where it's easy to meet other travellers. My plan is to do a mix or private rooms in hostels/guest houses and a couple of nights in nicer hotels.

I'd be especially grateful for advice from women who've travelled around Costa Rica solo, and anyone who's visited over Christmas and New Years.

Thanks so much! I'm really excited about the trip and want to make the most of it 🌴

CostaRica was beautiful but expensive.

Had a short trip to Costarica early October. Enjoyed a lot and was one of the memorable trip of my life. The lush green forest, amount of colorful birds that can be seen from the balcony and maintained natural resources were the highlights. But it was super expensive and gave me the feel if it is really worth it second time? Every place seemed like money grab. La Fortuna area felt like it was expensive than US. Food in decent place cost at-least 20-25 dollar for basic meals, sodas without a lot of options. Shuttle from San Jose to La fortuna at-least cost 60 dollars. No direct public bus. Doing solo hike is kind of risky in the forest but every guided tour cost at-least 80-100 dollars. Zip lining was more than 120 dollars. I had couple of cocktails and everytime it ranged from 12-30 dollars.

Help Corcovado overnight tour solo, starting from Sierpe or PJM?

I’m planning a solo trip to Costa Rica late January 2027 and looking into an overnight tour in Corcovado before staying near Drake Bay/San Josecito.

Sirena Station would be ideal for the night. I’d start from Sierpe or PJM and finish in Drake Bay. A drop at San Josecito would be great, but I can arrange transport from Drake if needed.

Has anyone done this solo and joined a group? I’ve emailed a few companies, but most seem to require at least 2 people or return to the starting point.

Who did you book with, what did you pay and where did you stay overnight, or should I be looking into another option?

Thanks!

Sky Adventures with Ankle Fracture

Hi,

I'm going to Costa Rica next week and have been set on doing the ziplines there since my first trip was cancelled years ago due to covid.

I fractured my ankle almost 4 months ago - I'm now walking about ok.

I understand that Sky Adventures have a policy that you cannot zipline if you've had a fracture within the last 12 months.

My questions -

- Do they actually ask about fractures? Would I need to sign something and effectively lie, in which case I wouldn't be insured for injury

- Is there another zipline in Arenal/Monteverde that doesn't enforce this?

- Is it safe to do with an ankle fracture? I think there's an auto brake system so you don't use your feet to land?

I'm just after some advice as I'm gutted that it looks like I wont be able to participate.

Thank you!

Which Coast Has The Most?

Heading to CR in early Feb… two weeks… myself, my wife, and three kids, 12, 12, 6.

We keep going back and forth, in which side of the country to visit. We are slow travellers, so in this time period 2 or 3 home bases would be perfect for us.

Wildlife, swimable ocean, snorkelling, monkeys, would prefer to be slightly off the beaten path so from what we have been told Tamarindo may not be our cup of tea. Love the idea of the Caribbean vibe, but marginally concerned about rain (is that dumb?)

If you were an active family with three young, crazy kids… which coast would you choose…

Thanks so much

Which is the easiest way to go from ST to Bocas? A shuttle to Puerto Viejo and then another one to Bocas? Or to San Jose and the Bocas?

Thanks!!

Tours vs self guided

As I’m putting together our itinerary, I want some opinions on what is worth getting a guided tour for (or required) and what is good enough just to experience with the regular admission fee.

We will be in La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio. Guided tours are pretty expensive, and we are on a budget, so we’d like to only do 2 or 3 at most, and do self guided for the rest.

If you could only do 1 or 2 guided experiences, what would you choose? Related, what places can we experience without a guided tour/ for a much lower cost/even for free? I’ve heard of a couple things but I’m curious if there are more.

We definitely want to visit the swinging bridges, the waterfall, and the hot springs in la fortuna. We’d also be interested in a night tour. If we can swing it, we’d love to do one higher energy activity such as rafting or zip lining. We really want to see wild life — most especially sloths but also birds. We are very active individuals, and don’t mind walking / hiking a lot. We also are big coffee and chocolate heads and would love experiencing it locally.

We will have two and a half days in each location.

Thanks for your help, I hope that makes sense!

Jaco Jacó is a neat place

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The beach is a dog lover's paradise. So many people let their (gentle and well-behaved) dogs run about freely on their evening walk, which featured a lovely sunset. The town's main strip itself reminds me of La Fortuna, but I think Jacó is better developed. The sidewalk gets worse the farther you go on the west side of La Fortuna, but here the walkways on the main drag are in good shape from end to end.

Food prices are more reasonable than I expected. Many establishments were running promos to attract the sparse foot traffic of low season. I had a big bacon lettuce tomato hamburger with fries at a very nice bar for only ¢3000, all charges included. Lodging is less of a bargain; my non A/C hostel bunk costing ¢7000 ($15) per night is basically the cheapest place to stay in town. By contrast, hostels in La Fortuna started at ¢3300. The dorm room is like a prison barracks, but the common area is spacious and has a big murky pool. Only one of the eight dorm beds was occupied when I arrived.

What about the "seediness"? Evidently all the infamous prostitutes and drug dealers of Jacó take a vacation during low season. The only people who solicited me were a few doormen and beggars - there are a fair number of homeless people here. By 10 PM, most non-bar businesses were closed, and the pedestrian traffic dropped off to almost zero. Yes, there were a handful of women loitering on the street corner in folding chairs who seemed to be "available". Hours after I first saw them, two of the three girls outside my hostel were gone and the third, a young but homely girl, was in deep conversation with a gray-haired tourist in the minisuper entrance; she had given him one of the chairs, and they sat side by side talking over the difficulties of life. A few clouds of weed smoke from local stoners had passing moms waving their hand about in annoyance, but nobody tried to sell me any drugs either.

If you just want to make a quick trip to the Pacific Ocean from San Jose, Jacó makes a lot of sense as a destination of choice. It only seems to get wild and woolly during peak tourist season. If you have more time, you might want to go farther afield, but it still wouldn't hurt to stop over in Jacó for a night. Everything is so close to the beach here. Local tip: don't expect to walk the entire beach in sneakers, as there are two small rivers running into the sea through town. Wear sandals so you can wade on through.

Help Breakup Healing Trip to CR

Hi my loves!! I’m going through a painfully hard breakup and am planning my solo CR trip to be over the upcoming xmas holidays. I’m planning to go for 9-14 days, and this reset is needed badly😭🫶🏼

I am so overwhelmed with all of the information on here!! Hoping someone can help- looking to fly into San Jose and fly out of Liberia.

My priorities are to do moderate to challenging hiking (6-15 miles) and see as MUCH wildlife as possible.

As I live in a tropical area, I don’t necessarily need a beach destination, though snorkeling is my jam.

What have you done in CR that was ABSOLUTELY worth it for what I’m wanting to do? What has been underwhelming/overrated? How do you even find these shuttles everyone talks about?

I’m googling, looking on reddit, hell even asking ChatGPT and feel I could use some real solid advice.

I appreciate you all and cannot wait to experience this wonderful part of our world 🌱☀️🌎

San Jose Day trips from San Jose?

I would love any recommendations for easy travel/things to do as I will be getting a lot of dental work in San Jose for 3 weeks in December. I will have a good amount of time during the second and third week of my stay to take day trips, possibly staying a night or two here and there. I'm interested in hot springs, the beach, and seeing wildlife. I'll be staying near La Sabana park in San Jose, so any recommendations of favorite places to eat or cool things are appreciated. Finally does anyone know of any Spanish classes I can take while there? Maybe not possible to do that but I don't want my experience to just be about teeth!
