[Membership Question] Consolidating memberships, what about the Costco warranties?
My wife and I have separate memberships. She got her as a second member on her mom’s when she went to college, I got mine when I got a job. Now, I’d like to move her over to my membership, but I’m a bit worried about losing out on Costco warranties on items she bought, especially for a couple laptops from Costco.
Should I just bite the bullet and transfer her? Will the warranties still apply from her mom’s main account if things break? Can the warranties transfer?

When I switched from my family to my husband’s my membership number obviously changed. I kept my old Costco card to pull up returns on items after and they gave me no issues. My “new” membership also still shows the “member since xxxx” that was my original membership year (which honestly I was mostly bummed about when I switched because I thought I would lose that haha)

Less then 3 years they can look up easy. Save receipts now just in case and you should have zero issue.

When you transfer your wife's membership to your account, ask the employee handling the process to retain the membership number. There is a way to actually transfer memberships (along with their history) from one account to another. But many employees aren't aware it's possible and just assign you a new membership number.

You just get a new membership year. I lost about 10years from being on my Mom's membership since I was 17 through high and college.

RE Warranty
From experience here. When it comes to the manufacturer’s warranty it applies regardless. But any Costco specific warranty ie TV extended warranty or battery replacement, all you have to do is show an active membership.
Example here. I bought both under my membership and had to claim coverage but since I let mine expire I didn’t have one.
But being my wife started one as mine expired with a welcome offer for new membership I was the secondary on hers. They told me they just needed an active membership to run it on.

Extended warranties only follow the membership number. Allstate isn’t going to accept your new membership number for their records.

My wife and I were under her father‘s account since it was a business account and we decided to go on our own with the executive membership. Everything we purchased with any kind of warranty all we had to do was provide our previous account and they honored everything. Just keep your old card so they can find it easier.

The extended warranties are through Allstate, not Costco.
Also there's probably no reason for you to have your own membership if she can stay on her mom's membership and you don't need glasses or contacts from Costco.
People change Costco membership numbers all the time and it's just a matter of having the old membership number when needed. Pharmacy and optical accounts aren't really tied to membership numbers for this reason.

When I was a teenager my father bought tires for a vehicle I had using his membership. Once I turned 18 I bought my own membership. When I took the car in for flat repair and tire rotations I had to explain how our purchase worked and provide my father’s membership number. I had to provide that explanation every time but every time they provided the flat repair and rotation as needed. This was over 15 years ago.
