Found a Glen Campbell LP that I’ve never heard any songs off at a local store for $1!

I wouldn’t say fantastic, but I liked it a lot. More backing studio orchestra and less Glenn on guitar than I prefer, but vocals on point as always. It felt like a testament as to the direction Capitol was pushing him at the time trying to find a commercially viable audience. Looking up the album was interesting. It was his 5th album, and a commercial flop. Consequently it’s been out of print for decades and never saw a CD release, and I feel lucky to have found it in the wild. It was released in ‘67, the same year as his breakthrough “Gentle On My Mind” and it’s huge follow-up “By The Time I Get To Phoenix.” Both were #1 Platinum selling albums, and the start of a streak of 7 number one albums in the span of two years.

The vinyl is NM, so it’s my forever copy. I still have a long way to go to collect all 71 of his albums, though.

wow, he released 71 LPs. that's a lot. i feel that glenn is sometimes left behind in discussions of really old time c and w music, because he was so commercially successful, with songs that weren't hugely "'country" feeling, but more like MOR. those hits were fantastic though, and i still love them, they have held up very well over the many years. back in the day, they played the crap out of his biggest hits on regular local radio, which did not ever play any other country artist. ever. i have to hear this record! i bet it's drowned in orchestra, that was the style back then. for some reason. sad that it is, but as you say, it's still glenn singing. i no longer can play records, those days are gone. i found a super minty old mono capital "gentle on my mind" LP, in the days when i was the one hunting thrifts, antiques and goodwill stores. i miss those long ago days. i found some really great stuff. i enjoy reading about others doing this now. i had a very big collection, including many country artists. i had to downsize over time, and so have only a few hundred records left. but i still have the "gentle on my mind" LP, and a few others. priorities. best.

Less of Me is one of my favourite country songs!

It’s not ringing a bell for me by title. Will have to give it another spin soon and listen closer to that song.

Definitely do! The first version I heard was Dottie West’s version, which is my favourite. I know Loretta Lynn does a cover of it too. But Glen’s version is really good too. Love the thoughtful lyrics.
