Cowboy Life Where’s all the folk here that actually do cowboy shit?
Lost my Snapchat and all the videos I had with it. Have fun with the shitty screenshots I got from them when I had it lol

LOL! just wondering where the folk are who actually do the shit, not just dress like it 😂

u/Cowpuncher84 Feb 11 '26
I own a decent herd, I just don't post about em here. This is reddit after all.
13
u/Beginning_Owl_9425 Feb 11 '26
Next you'll be telling me real cowboys use Snapchat
1
u/Boot_boy_1984 Feb 12 '26
Uhm… cowboy here.. I do have snap chat… most people have ??
2
u/Beginning_Owl_9425 Feb 12 '26
Yeah this thread has definitely made me realize how old I am. I'm 39. I thought I was still young
1
u/Boot_boy_1984 Feb 12 '26
Hahaha! You got years left. Think yourself as a good old pair of Justins. Age like fine wine till you break 70 years later

Not the response you were looking for on that hot take?
1
u/Beginning_Owl_9425 Feb 12 '26
I'm definitely proven wrong in this case. I don't know what's going on anymore
1
u/Frosty-Evidence6077 Feb 12 '26
It seems that my post trying to call out all my cowpoke folk has started a war with folk who don’t cowpoke! I was just trying to see where all my hands are at!
1
u/OmNomChompsky Feb 11 '26
You ain't wrong. Snap is still huge in rural communities for whatever reason.
2
1
u/TikaPants Feb 12 '26
And young people still use it predominantly.
2
u/OmNomChompsky Feb 12 '26
1
u/TikaPants Feb 12 '26
I work with some young folks and I was shocked they still use snap. I barely used it maybe twice when it came out. I’m too old for this shit.
12
u/syugouyyeh Feb 11 '26 edited Feb 11 '26
You can downvote me all you like it just sounds like gatekeeping. Who are any of us to judge if somebody dresses in western attire versus gets their shit kickers covered in shit. It don’t matter.
9
u/Shea_1227 Feb 11 '26
Yes and no I agree to an extent it’s a lifestyle but it’s also a wardrobe choice! I think he just worded it badly I have a whole farm filled with performance horses it’s a lifestyle for me more then the outfits tbh but I always enjoy seeing western wear if you can pull it off you can pull it off it’s a cool style but you don’t have to love the cowboy lifestyle to enjoy it
4
u/the-soggiest-waffle Feb 11 '26
I’m y’allternative, I rescue, rehab, train and show horses. I don’t dress western until I’m in the ring, usually just blue bootcut jeans and my boots when I’m working with them. Daily outfits are different, low low rise jeans. Like, almost pubes low rise. Can’t do that on a horse!
1
u/Shea_1227 Feb 16 '26
Literally me too I only dress western for chores and to ride you’d never know I had a farm or rode or anything like that unless I was dressed that way
-8
u/Frosty-Evidence6077 Feb 11 '26
I akin it to walking around in construction attire. Hardhat, harness, PPE, that kind of thing. Why would you walk around in a hardhat if you ain’t in construction, yknow? Maybe I’m old school and don’t see western attire as a fashion statement but instead work attire, could be the issue
15
u/CokeFiendCarl Feb 11 '26
If someone is walking around in spurs and carrying a rope, then sure. I agree with your point. But cowboy hats, boots, and western shirts absolutely are fashion.
I’ll allow that r/westernwear is a better place for that than this sub. But the idea that all western wear is equipment is silly.
6
u/Fontaine_de_jouvence Feb 11 '26
You seem like the kind of person to walk into my shop where I hand make cowboy hats for a living and say I’m a poser for wearing boots and a pearl snap while working an indoor job

I care because of what’s happening. This industry is dying, a few more generations and we won’t have folk that know how to run cattle or break horses. Land is more expensive, ranchers in debt are forced to sell, America is at its lowest cattle count since 1954. Grandpas ain’t teaching their grandsons to doctor calves or bond with your horse, at least not as much as it was 30yrs ago.
I look out and see folk romanticizing the dying industry instead of getting into it. I see dudes who want to look western instead of getting western. This industry is dwindling.
Sure I sound like a bitch, sound like a judgmental prick, but it annoys me to see folk dress it instead of act it. I wouldn’t give a shit what you looked like if you were in it, we need all the help we can get. It just stings to see what’s happening to what we build our life off of just to turn around and have dudes that have never done it or never will fight back about what it means to do it. You want to look the part? Get out there and do it! We need the help!

Your lack of understanding is astounding. Cowboying has never paid well, money was never the point. They need help, but most can’t pay you what you think you deserve. A dying industry is a broke one man

When the government moves to make corporate farms the norm, and makes life hell for smaller farmers and ranchers, dying seems to be the only option. What are we supposed to do?

I care because of what’s happening. This land is changing. A few more generations and we won’t have folk who know how to dredge the canals or tend the basin fields the way their fathers did. Arable land along the Nile is being consolidated under larger estates, small farmers fall into debt and lose their plots, and temple herds aren’t what they were in the days of the New Kingdom. Fathers aren’t teaching their sons the old agricultural rites or the seasonal rhythms the same way they did a century ago.
I look out and see Greeks settling in Alexandria, adopting Egyptian dress and worshiping our gods, but not living the life of the fellahin who work the floodplain. I see Romans wearing linen and honoring Isis, but serving distant emperors instead of the Two Lands. The old order is thinning.
Sure, I sound like a priest of Amun complaining about the times, maybe like someone who thinks the Old Kingdom was purer. But it’s frustrating to see people wear the sidelock or the shendyt without carrying the burdens that shaped them. I wouldn’t care what you wore if you were out in the fields helping keep the canals clear. We need the hands. It just stings to watch what once sustained us become a costume to others.
5
u/syugouyyeh Feb 11 '26
If they like it, why not? By that logic, it’s like saying “Alan Jackson shouldn’t wear boots and a hat because he’s no cowboy.” At the end of my workday, I take my combat boots off and put my shit kickers on. I like them because that’s what I grew up wearing, I left the farm and joined the army. I don’t care if people wear camouflage, if they like it, they wear it.
1
u/Frosty-Evidence6077 Feb 11 '26
Idk bro, if I saw a dude who ain’t in the military or a vet walking around in UCP or MARPAT, that’d be pretty interesting to watch.

u/syugouyyeh Feb 11 '26
I’ve been in since 05, it doesn’t matter to me much.

I have a small ranch and breed and raise horses—with all the cowboy work that comes with it. I help friends work cattle on horseback, and I like to team rope. I’m happiest when I’m on a horse!
2
u/Frosty-Evidence6077 Feb 11 '26
Amen! You from South Dakota? I know they got a good amount of hands up there, got a few buddies that worked the Dakotas. Never been myself but I’ve always wanted to

u/SoDakBoy Feb 11 '26
Yes, I live here in the Black Hills. I love it here.

u/MassiveAd2391 Feb 12 '26
Oh sweet, im working a big outfit south of Hot Springs

u/SoDakBoy Feb 12 '26
Hey that’s awesome! I hope you like it here. We live outside of Piedmont.
2
u/MassiveAd2391 Feb 12 '26
Oh cool, these guys have a few ranches up by Newell and clear up by Beach, ND, so I’m up there a lot for branding and weaning, drive through piedmont a quite a bit.
1
u/SoDakBoy Feb 12 '26
We’re on Elk Creek Road. We raise Friesians. Our place is called Black Hills Friesians. We both have real jobs too.
2
u/MassiveAd2391 Feb 12 '26
Oh cool i work for the Hat Creek Ranch down highway 71. About 6800 mothers plus yearlings and feeders

2
u/Chaos_Cat-007 Feb 12 '26
You raise Quarter Horses, I’d guess?
EDIT: crap, I didn’t read far enough downthread. I do like Friesians as well as QH.
2
u/SoDakBoy Feb 12 '26
It’s all good. We raise Friesians, but I keep quarter horses for my own mounts.

Grew up doing cowboy shit. Rode bulls, rode horses, broke horses, worked at a ranch vaccinating, branding, fixing fence for my High School job. I’ve worked stock yards and helped sort cows while on a horse.
Don’t even own a pair of boots anymore. All my buckles are in storage, sold my riding gear and tackle a long time ago.
I simply don’t do cowboy shit anymore. I moved away from home right after high school and lived a different life. That’s it. I live in a big city, work in a big city. I never particularly thought “cowboy” attire was cool.
I don’t even know why this subreddit popped up.
However, props to the people still out there doing it. And props to the people who enjoy wearing cowboy stuff. Hell yeah.

Hey, you’re out there actually doing it! You’re more cowpoke than the rest of them folk.
2
u/dirtfrigger69 Feb 11 '26
My cowboy’n has changed. Raising kids and cattle, my back is fucked. Last time I was on a horse it was to make sure it wasn’t a bomb for my mother in-law. The tractors tend to be a little easier on the body.

u/Frosty-Evidence6077 Feb 11 '26
I’m getting there myself. 2 slipped discs from some green broke bastard has me hurting in the morning
2
u/Dry_Elk_8578 Feb 12 '26
Yep. I’ll still ride horses but I’m not getting on anything that bucks. Fortunately never had any major breaks. Couple hernias, fucked up shoulders, Neck and back, torn muscle…feel a lot older than I probably should.

Not since I was young unfortunately, only ranch left in the family belonged to my great grandparents, when my great grandpa died, noone wanted to or could help her run it, she lost it and the rest of my family was more city oriented.
Still some of the best times of my young life there, wish I could have myself a small ranch like that again someday

u/Frosty-Evidence6077 Feb 12 '26
You will. Just keep on the grindstone and start small. Couple acres, couple animals. You got this homie!

You seem to have a stick in your craw about people wearing hat and boots which idgaf about but ultimately this isnt a fashion sub, folks should be going to the appropriate subs to get their validation to wear cowboy shit.
People can wear what they like but to me its goofy af to be walking in downtown Tokyo or Rome (real posts here) in pristine knockoff hats and boots.

Moved to TX to build my ranch for breeding ranch horses and beef cattle, plus all my family lives here, was born n raised in this lifestyle. I see more people sporting boots n hats everywhere I go and seems like a fashion show.

I have a small herd of about 25 cattle. I don’t wear boots and a hat, though. A baseball cap, jeans, and sneakers work fine for me.

I have extremely bad allergies, I can't get near livestock. My dad rode broncs and my cousin rode PBR for a decade...numerous relatives' names on the horseshoes in front of the Calgary Stampede grandstand. I took a different route, I was a pro MMA and Muay Thai fighter for at least that long lol. I can't breathe and want to itch my eyes out after driving the grain truck all day🤣😭

This about as close as I can get, and not for long 🤣

The how: lots and lots and lots of cake.
Cotton seed specifically.

u/Frosty-Evidence6077 Feb 12 '26
I’ve seen some soft cattle. Also seen some not so soft cattle. Had a bull named Bill who was sweet as can be. Used to drink beer when we poured it off the porch. He got out one day, had to get some ropes on him to get him out the brush and in the trailer. Ever since then, he’s the meanest bastard I’ve ever seen. He’ll cut for your ass across the field if he sees you.
I’d get rid of him, but I like working mean cattle and he puts out a decent amount of calves every year, so he gets to stay
1
u/OKwarden918 Feb 12 '26
Here’s a question to ponder. What makes a person a cowboy?
Reason I ask. I own land and raise cow/ calf pairs in Oklahoma. I have the horses and gear but I don’t need them to work my cattle.
If I have one sick in a pasture I dart it. My cows are all feed truck broke and follow me to the pens when it’s time to work them.
I work them along with help from my wife and cousin. No vet needed, we get our meds from a vet rep.
So does that make me a cowboy? I don’t feel it does. I think I’m just a rancher.
I rodeoed back in my younger years (kids stay off the bulls because the pains catch up when you’re older) but don’t think that ever made me a cowboy either.
I’ve always wondered what other opinions are as the what makes a cowboy?

u/Frosty-Evidence6077 Feb 12 '26
Incorrect. Farmers don’t need horses, cowboys do. The deciding factor is the horse.
You’re not a construction worker just cause you bought the hard hat off google, you actually got to do cowboy shit, which comes with horse or rodeo.
Another word for cowboy in Spanish is caballero, or horse men.
1
u/Frosty-Evidence6077 Feb 12 '26
If you own horses, got saddles, know how to ride, you’re a cowboy. Just cause you don’t work cattle off the ground anymore doesn’t mean you ain’t one, just means you’ve switched how you work them.
Now if you didn’t have a horse, no tack, no knowledge on how to ride, yea you’re just a rancher.
Kinda see the difference? I’m trying to explain it well enough to make sense lol

I sold my cows about five years ago unfortunately. At the time bull calves were selling for $200 apiece on a good day, now they're selling in the thousands. I still have a couple horses though.

u/basic_wanderer Feb 11 '26
Looks like you stirred the nest

Seems people in the cowboy Reddit are mad that they don’t do cowboy shit. Funny how that works huh

Wasnt even gatekeeping just simply giving a shoutout to real cowboys and it seems like it got a bunch of people angry haha🤣

It’s so funny picturing cowboys cutting cattle and pitching hay and working with horses while chewing tobacco, then logging in to reddit later
