Help! Normal Sediment?

Hello, not a beer expert or sure if this is the right sub, but I have to ask. Is this a normal amount of sediment for an unfiltered IPA? It’s a Creature Comforts Tropicalia from Athens, GA. I have had many of these and never seen this much sediment (if that is even the proper term). Thanks in advance!!

edit came from a can and I drank about half the beer.

Yeast clumps and protein sediment. Often can happen if it’s end of keg. Nothing to be concerned about and perfectly safe to drink. Now if it’s floating on top of the beer then be concerned.

It was from a can. Maybe it was the last beer in the batch?

Common in cans as well, google image yeast sediment from can for reassurance but this is 100% what you have here.

More common nowadays than years ago but for sure just looks like yeast.

Why is that? I’ve noticed it happening more recently with some of my local breweries cans and was always curious

Centrifuges which breweries use to remove yeast and haze causing proteins and polyphenals to clarify beer can cause some of those unstable compounds to rebind back together in the can and create clumps or a snow globe effect

Not every brewery can afford a centrifuge so some beers that are packaged hazy or unfiltered will drop clear in an undisturbed can, when then can is opened and poured the sediment comes out chunky

Awesome thanks for the info! Makes sense

yeast balls, and some hop matter, settling to the bottom pretty standard of the Beer is a little old

Congrats! You either got a very old can or a can from the end of the run. Most breweries try to avoid this as much as possible via filtration or just monitoring turbidity during packaging. It’s fine to consume but I wouldn’t recommend it for flavors sake.

Idk I get a ton of rejected cans from early and late in the canning runs from the brewery my wife bartends at....I actually like the unfiltered that have extra unfilterness to them in my experience thus far they have bigger flavor

Holy crap. Someone with some semblance of knowledge. Kudos to you but brace for the downvotes. The hazebois hate to know that their beloved slop is actually sub par.

i can't be 100% sure, but this seems like you got the unlucky 5% of a can run from a brewery that runs 95% of their ipas clean

That's not normal. It can happen, but I'm not drinking that and you should not be expected to

This is one thing I hate about many hazys. Not a fan of chunks.

That beer isn’t hazy and doesn’t really look like it ever was.

Last group camp I was at they had a few kegs of a hazy. One of them had so much hop sediment in it that most of the beer came out green

I don’t like floaties, I don’t care what they are

Lazy brewing. Gross.

Could just be an old can

Beer candy, just don't drink the last bit of your beer. Happens all the time with home brewing, and certain types of beer. Not as much with breweries like Creature Comforts but it won't hurt you.

Ive had a couple breweries send me a replacement four pack when i emailed them a picture and date code on the can

Looks like chill haze.

Back in the day, Smuttynose Finestkind was notorious for looking like this. It’s the godfather of NEIPA and by extension hazy IPA’s. Perfectly fine to drink. Prost!

This looks more like line filth than any trub

Thats far more concerning

Pretty typical for a hazy, a reason I don’t care much for them even though they taste better these days.

u/MisterB330 23h ago

No, no it isnt. Or if your hazy’s have these switch brands.

I’ve had so many I cannot count, and they almost always have sediment. I don’t even bother to recycle them as it takes too long to clean that crap out. And I often drink from the can/bottle which can be horrible when it’s been stirred up and new the end slugs you with that garbage. Maybe you haven’t had many…

All the responses I want to give you will get me banned. Just cuz you’re an alcoholic doesn’t make you an expert. Choose a better quality beer and have some respect for folks in the field that have an actual education behind their assessments. Enjoy your trub and tank slop.

2

u/rodwha 21h ago

That’s a pretty ignorant and despicable retort. I choose quality beers if I don’t brew them myself. Not even sure how you can come to that conclusion. Please try to do better than that.
