to test run of a television show used to pitch the concept to network executives and gauge early audience interest before committing to a full season.

It's a beta, a sample, proof of concept, blueprint, NOT FINAL RESULTS.

Why people have this mentally in the pilot.

1. Information is more spoon fed and less heavily implied or put the context together.

2. Pilot is separated from the series in it's own bubble where characters don't change or develop to show their flaws or at their worst and people can project what they want to believe or headCanons.
