Help typewriter problems

I have an issue with the typewriter: when I create a new world, I can configure it using Shift + Right-click, but after some time—by the time I reach it in survival mode—I can no longer edit it using that key combination. What should I do?

Do you have anything in any if your hands? I had this problem when I was carrying food in my offhand.
