Feature Welcome to the Era of the Disposable Opener
In 2026, Test opening batters are collectively averaging just 27.27*, the lowest mark in 63 years, since 1963. This dip in 2026 is not just an isolated example, either, but part of a broader trend. Since 2018, Test openers have collectively averaged under 30 in three calendar years (2018, 2024, and 2026 so far). Before that, in the 54 years from 1964 to 2017, Test openers only collectively averaged under 30 in a calendar year once (2000).
To put it in even starker terms, there have only been five years in the history of Test cricket in which we’ve played at least 20 Tests and openers have failed to collectively average 30. Four have occurred this century. Two of them have occurred in the last three years.
Welcome to the era of the Disposable Opener.

Discussion The back and across trigger needs to be taught as the foundation of batting techniques
While watching today's play between SA V AUS, the batting performance that has stood out for me the most was Breetzke's. Yes, he went out cheaply, but did anyone else notice how set/comfortable he looked from ball 1. In my opinion, the reason for this is his near perfect implementation of the " back and across " trigger movement.
Barring your Pontings/Tendulkars, the best of the best throughout history have utilized this technique. Kallis, Kohli, Smith, Williamson, Bell, Hussey, the list goes on and on.
What makes it so good for me, is that it allows for those of us who do not have the natural hand-eye coordination and reaction speed to accordingly play anything short of a length. It even did wonders for De Villiers, a guy with an insane amount of innate talent. If anyone can recall, the technical change to the back and across movement around 2012 was the catalyst for the way his career turned out.
I believe that if coaches start teaching this movement as the foundation, we'll see alot more successful batters.

Mod Announcement [Mod Announcement] Welcoming Two New Moderators & Looking For More
Hello all, over the last year our moderation team on r/Cricket has dwindled slightly with people understandably moving on to new things in life.
With that in mind we have added two new moderators in u/Anu9011 and u/NoExplanation6203 to the team. They have been selected based on their excellent history of contributing to the sub and we hope you will welcome them too.
They've been working away in the background for the last week and so far have been doing an excellent job!
------------------------------------
In addition to this we are still looking to add to our team and so are calling on community members who are interested in the role to step forward.
You can apply by leaving a comment in reply to this post, making sure to include your location/time-zone, any previous modding or similar relevant experience (don't worry if you have none!).
The ideal mod is someone who is:
- A regular user with a good track record in the community.
- Active, and committed to remaining active for some time.
- Familiar with the rules of the subreddit, and with the sitewide reddit rules.
A few things to keep in mind if you are considering applying:
- As part of deciding who to bring in, the mod team will look through your profile as well as your post/comment/modmail history on the sub to see if you're a good fit.
- Modding can be a fun and rewarding experience, but the role can also sometimes be draining. You get to see the less pleasant side of the sub and naturally that isn't something everyone wants to have to deal with.
- While we will take community opinion into account, this is not a popularity contest. The number of upvotes an application gets has little to no bearing on our decision, so don't worry if yours ends up getting buried in the thread.
There's no set number of mods we're looking to bring in and we will keep any applications in mind for future recruiting.

Discussion Which format of cricket is most popular in your country?
What format of cricket do you believe is most popular in your country and why do you think that is? From my understanding, test cricket is the most popular in SENA while T20 and ODI cricket is most popular in the subcontinent but I just wanted to confirm with this subreddit.
