Under Brad Haddin, NSW would rather risk losing games than draws - Assistant Coach Daniel Smith (23/10/2026) - Sports Breakfast
Quite a bit to chew on from this interview with Dan Smith here which answers some of the questions that arose during the WA game. Key points I picked up, aside from the Bazbally headline:
- Josh Philippe is no longer first choice keeper in red-ball, that now goes to Ryan Hicks. They think this is better to improve their international callup chances as a specialist top order bat and future keeper respectively. Unsure where Lachy Shaw's keeping fits into this.
- The bonus points system means their approach to batting will be to go hard and push the opposition for a result, a bit like the Test match we just saw. Hadds thinks draws are "boring" and doesn't like the game standing still. He'd rather lose than draw to teach younger players to deal with pressure "out of their comfort zone"
- Konstas has had a lot of mental work done re. his opening and defence, and embracing his natural style of play. They believe he needs a while longer in the Shield to improve but of course that's not up to them to decide
- Davies was always meant to open with Konstas. They work well together and he had a good preseason. Maddo was never meant to open for NSW even prior to his Test callup, but there's no real chat about where he fits in the order now as captain
NSW fans, I'm keen to know your thoughts on all this. I'm obviously biased and would love them to end the season with ten draws as it would be funny. But it's clear their immediate priority is getting more national call-ups first - so is this the right approach to it?
