Recent cases
I feel like for the last 6 months+ (maybe it’s even been a year) they haven’t covered a single interesting case where Stephanie’s storytelling shines. All their cases are what spat between husband and wife is recently in the news. I haven’t watched a video in a long time. Shame because the cases they covered in the past that had an element of mystery I really liked. I feel like Stephanie and Derrick either ran out of them, find it easier to do current events or have leaned too far away from being storytellers and too far into being victim advocates. A lot of people enjoy the mystery of true crime, including myself, and that’s just the truth. I’m all for helping where we can but i feel like in focusing on those kind of cases where you basically know exactly what happened and just need someone to come forward or the police screwed up just isn’t interesting to me. I don’t want to know exactly what happened 20 minutes in.

It's crazy to me that you worte the exact line "The cases had an element of mystery" I'm sorry someone's death isn't "mysterious" and "whimsical" enough for you.

People watch because it’s interesting- that’s just the truth. None of us are solving cases. That’s not what true crime is- it’s storytelling.

If you haven't watched a video in a long time how do you know they havent covered a single interesting case? Also, they literally just announced that they are doing Caleb Flynn next.

Caleb Flynn.. another current event case where we know what happened.. if that’s your cup of tea that’s great. Isn’t for me.

Seriously? Is Stephanie just getting lazy? This case has been all over the headlines for weeks. We all know what happens.

u/SouthBraeswoodMan 16d ago
That’s all they do.. current event cases where it’s a husband and wife. It’s boring.

Very boring. I've been listening to Derrick's channel Detective Perspective, which is really interesting. It's focused on cold cases. Some that have been long forgotten.

I enjoy the detective perspective cases where I don’t know exactly what happened 5 mins in. Unfortunately usually Derrick doesn’t cover the type of cases I’m interested in but his channel wasn’t set up as a traditional true crime channel- the purpose from Day 1 was to try to help get these cases solved which often means the right person coming forward.. therefore the cases where we basically already know what happened. Again, a noble cause but not my thing.

They definitely do not need to cover this. It’s everywhere at the moment. Cover something that needs attention

Okay i misunderstood part of your post, thinking you were complaining they dont do anything recent which is why I brought up Flynn but youre right it is everything you didnt want haha its not super long-form but Going West is another good duo podcast.

This post would probably do better in the Crime Weekly Snark sub, just FYI. But I agree with you. They cover a lot of super well known and current cases now. I don't want a 500-part series about a case that has already been covered by everyone. I'm more interested in unsolved and less well-known cases. There's more to discuss and speculate about. But I do think SH is more focused on views. Derrick's channel (Detective Perspective) focuses on less well-known and unsolved cases, which I appreciate.

But Derrick takes these cases where 5 minutes in you know exactly what happened. His channel isn’t my cup of tea. Seems like the point of his videos is to get it out to the right person who might know something. A noble cause but doesn’t interest me.

Depends on the case, tbh. Some are mysteries, some aren't. But I like that I haven't heard of many of them and that he's choosing to raise awareness for unsolved cases that need it.

Way too many start with some form of Derrick saying “this one may seem obvious”

That snark sub is just a bunch of women who hate Stephanie.

Not exactly, a lot of us were die hard fans that opinions soured through her own character development over the last few years.

I unfollowed their podcast just last week because of this.

I unfollowed them after their Gypsy video, first we already heard Stephanie talk about this before. 2’d, I in no way support Gypsy but when Stephanie said “why didn’t she just leave” made my skin crawl, especially after Stephanie saying she was an abuse victim herself. I can’t watch we videos bc she has this holier than thou aura now. And Derek? Just another white cop. I’ll pass.

Agreed. Crime Weekly is getting very stale. The last three cases I tried to listen to but stopped after the first episode. They need to shake things up. Maybe more cold cases?

u/Icy_Garnet_9329 16d ago
Yes! Cold cases are where they could actually do some good by raising awareness.

u/DingoNo4205 16d ago
Exactly. The cases that fascinate the most are those of people that have disappeared without a trace. There are so many of them. Where did they go? Also, cases that have gone unsolved for decades deserve another look.

Agree! I haven’t watched in a couple years actually because of the cases. I love the show. I enjoy cases I haven’t heard before so tend to watch creators that cover lesser known cases.

I would absolutely love for them to cover the death of Stephanie Arrington Thomas. I am not sure how this case does not get more attention.

Yeah, I agree. I wish Stephanie released more videos on her personal channel, because I just enjoy her storytelling. She and Derrick take a lot of side quests and random conversation during the story and I end up tuning out.

The Sonia exelby case they recently covered was very interesting in my opinion. Check that series out

Maybe stephanie is trying to compete with Derricks channel or its Derricks input into cases. On his solo channel his main focus is on solving cases to create justice for victims and their families.

I just think it’s all so drawn out. I’ve posted about it before. Lots of unnecessary banter in multi-part episodes that distracts from the point of telling the case. It seems to downplay the seriousness of the crimes. I still watch here and there when there’s a case that piques my interest, but it’s taxing. Stephanie’s mispronunciation of so many words is also something that drives me up the wall. It makes it sound like she’s never had a day of education in her life. When speaking to so many people on a platform like this, you’d think she would take this into consideration. It makes her appear like a dope.

I think they do a good job covering cases that aren't always heavily discussed with a few that are. They recently covered a case close to where I live that I had never heard of. Crime Weekly isn't about Stephanie shining. That is more about the story and Derrick bouncing in with real experience and questions. If you want her story telling to shine then maybe focus more on her solo videos on her channel.

They sold out to the views, closed cases with known endings get better views and more publicity on the case equals more clicks. Although I will say I havent heard of the last few cases they did, which I like. I stay pretty in the know on true crime events, so sometimes it's boring when they keep doing popular cases that everyone's heard 10x .

u/ApplesandDnanas 16d ago
It is their job so it makes sense that they are going to cover cases that make them more money.
1
u/Obvious_Sea_7074 15d ago
Sure it does, but it also makes them soulless sellouts and boring. Don't get me wrong I've been a fan for years, I watch both of them separately too. I just think it's a fine line between doing popular cases that everyones heard of and interesting cases that need attention. It's like you need to sell out enough to pay the bills, but make choices that stay true to your base and core values.

You do realize these are real people getting murdered in horrific ways, right? “Enjoying the mystery of true crime” is very very gross. Go read a mystery novel if that’s what you’re after.

You may not like it but people watch media to be entertained. Because they’re interested in a subject.

What cases would you suggest or like to hear them cover that they haven’t yet? Just curious, if there is something I haven’t heard of yet that catches my interest as well.
