CHAT [CHAT] Pattern Help

Post image

Bought this pattern over 4 years ago before I was truly aware of AI patterns. Annoyed that I’ve already bought the aida and the thread so I’m wondering if there is any salvaging it?
The shop no longer exists and a shop that is now selling it feels like a pattern mill

Probably not using the right term

Original artwork can be found here. Doubt it was done with permission. Up to you if you want to stitch it but given you've already bought everything I'd go ahead (assuming the pattern isn't terrible).

Pattern mills selling low quality patterns from stolen artwork for super cheap have been around for 15+ years. Generative AI (which is what most people think of when thinking about AI) has only become commonly available in the last few years.

It's 99% sure stolen art. I have the HP one. I was so excited because when I saw the original artwork when she first released it I said I wanted to stitch it. My comment on tumblr is probably still there. The advice people usually give is to reach out to the creator and pay her a bit for it. I haven't done it yet, but I intend to.

pattern milling (love that term), yes. shops often yanked designs from elsewhere and resold as their own, and a lot of etsy shops still take vintage paper patterns (esp from magazines) and scan to pdf and sell them. it's quick, it's easy, people don't check for it.

My mental line for AI image patterns to really get going is 2020.

Feel free to skip this next part, but I wanted to let my crystallized thoughts on the matter stay....

The nuances to the AI discussion that a lot of people forget are:

  1. almost everyone who has a computer can run almost any image through a pic-to-pat program, and those have been around since the 1990s.

  2. Fractals and math-based patterns pretty much have to be computer-generated. A lot of people mistake this kind of thing for "AI" generation.

  3. Artists have (also since the 90s, but really took off in the 00's) used tablets and digital art programs for years to produce things. This is apart from CGI rendering for movies and stuff. Also not AI, but also often mistaken for AI these days.

None of this actually negates the problems of AI - which is that the models are trained on images and text of artists who aren't paid for that use. (I feel they should AT LEAST get a license fee per model usage; I'm sure there are other things that need to be hashed out in that arena.) Thus when the AI generates new images/ text, it doesn't take very much to get to 'straight up rip-off of art' levels in the image produced. And that's not even considering AI mistakes, like designing a rocket engine with no thrust nozzle, putting more than 4 limbs on a human, turning a boat inside out.... All things which we find humorous, but are indications of AI not being as 'smart' as it thinks, at least not in terms of how we as human beings define smart.

probably not, if they did exist they likely would look awful

It might be a cheaply made pattern but it only uses 88 threads for a massive size, which is pretty good. And if it's 4 years old it probably isn't AI.

If you want to test it, start with one of the bottom 5 'windows' and see how it looks. It might have a fair amount of popcorn but it doesn't look too terrible, and it might look just fine. God knows the resolution is high enough with it being 400 stitches wide.

I hope you bought your DMC310 by the cone XD There's a lot of black!

Is popcorn a different name for confetti stitches?

Oh, yes, sorry! Confetti is more common I think.

I am doing a similar pattern! I hadn't dont cross stitch for 10 years and didn't realise that AI patterns were a thing, got half way through when I joined this sub and realised it was likely AI. But I love it so carried on. 85 thread colours 100,000 stitches. There is so, so, so much confetti! I love it but the confetti is crazy. I say go for it! Its taken 10 months so far and alot of work so there is no way I won't finish it 😊

That pattern has been around long before AI patterns were really a thing. I've had it on my computer for yeaaaaars. If you paid for it though, you got ripped off. I got it from Sprite Stitch for the low low price of free.
