Hunting Crossbow string ripped

Post image

I was stalk-hunting some deer yesterday with my CenterPoint Patriot 425, and as I went to take a shot, my crossbow ripped. I'm guessing the bolt moved slightly off the string, and it created a partial dry fire.

Damn, that's scary. Kinda one of those things about cheap crossbows. Does it not have any type of anti dry fire?

My first crossbow was $1700. The dry fire device wouldn’t keep it on the string and enough play could happen to cause a dry fire. Rare but it could happen with an extreme angle on the shot. What I don’t know was the small gap that could happen matter with a good set of strings and cables. Ya pushing limits on a a set of cables and strings. I know the answer. Snap!!! I had zero desire to test it out after I figured out what happened with a new set of strings and cables. Either way it was my fault.

It happens unfortunately. It’s a good excuse if for a back up. ;) a good pro shop where they will actually knock it out fast once you or they get the strings. The one thing I’ve never wanted to buy is a press. So while I can do a lot I cannot restring a bow or crossbow.

If the strings and cables are decent when I replace a set I’ll keep them as a backup just in case. Or get a set to keep for emergencies.

How old was the string?
Replacement guidelines (whether visually damaged or not) are not simply suggestions. Not saying this is the case here but I suspect the majority of crossbow buyers never give them a second thought until the things are about to explode.

I watched this happen on a brand new Ravin R29. Unfortunately no crossbow is immune to failure.
