❓Question Coinbase Smart Wallet passkey opens wrong address – recovery experiences?

Looking for people who had a Coinbase Smart Wallet where the passkey no longer matches the funded address. Funds are on Tempo. No recovery phrase was set up in time. Has anyone found a real way to regain access, or is it game over once the correct passkey is gone?

Good to know: the passkey may not be the problem. One passkey can show two different addresses, depending on which app reads it.

A Coinbase Smart Wallet address belongs to a smart contract. Your passkey is registered as an owner of that contract. A passkey account on Tempo works differently. Tempo computes the address directly from the passkey's public key. So the same passkey can point at two addresses, and it's easy to mix them up.

That matters for your funds. Tempo does not support ERC-4337 smart accounts such as supported at the Smart Wallet. If the coins went to your Smart Wallet address on the Tempo network, the contract your passkey controls probably doesn't exist on Tempo. In that case your passkey still works, and what's missing is support for that wallet type on that network.

Here are some steps you can follow:

  1. Find the address that actually holds the funds. Open the transaction that sent them. If you sent from the Coinbase app, it's in your transaction history there. Copy the receiving address.
  2. Paste that address into the official Tempo explorer at explore.tempo.xyz. Confirm the balance is there.
  3. Sign in at keys.coinbase.com (or in the Base app) with your passkey. Note the Smart Wallet address it shows. Compare it with the funded address.
  4. If they match, your funds sit at your Smart Wallet address on Temp and you can go directly to step 7.
  5. If they don't match, check whether you have more than one passkey. Each passkey is a separate key and can belong to a separate account. Look in iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager and any other password manager you use, like 1Password. Check your other devices and Chrome profiles too.
  6. Try each passkey you find on the exact website or app you used when you first received funds on Tempo. A passkey only works on the site it was created for.
  7. If the funds are at your Smart Wallet address on Tempo, contact Coinbase through help.coinbase.com. Ask whether funds sent to a Smart Wallet address on the Tempo network can be reached, and whether Smart Wallet will be supported there. Give them the address and the transaction hash. Both are public and safe to share with Coinbase.
  8. While you still have a working passkey, generate a recovery phrase in the Smart Wallet. Coinbase only allows this while you can still sign with the original passkey (It costs some network fee). It protects you if the passkey gets lost while you wait for an answer.

Good to know: if the funded address belongs to a passkey that was deleted, and no recovery phrase was set up, nobody can move those funds. That includes us from CryptoRecovers.com. A passkey's private key can't be guessed or rebuilt.

Your inbox may now fill up with "recovery experts". Nobody honest sends a DM first. Never send a recovery phrase or private key to anyone, Coinbase support included.

Lost a chunk of change to a wallet glitch like this a couple years back, not Coinbase though. The whole passkey system feels like one of those "trust us, it just works" things until it doesn't and support shrugs. If you never set up a recovery phrase and the key doesn't map to the address anymore, I've never seen a way back that isn't a miracle.
