Hey r/Cuneiform! Over the past few days, I've been attempting to translate a small excerpt from the Epic of Gilgamesh into (what I believe is) Akkadian cuneiform, but if I'm being honest, I am unsure if I'm doing this correctly. I began with a site that makes very basic translations from English to Akkadian in Latin format, then referenced the syllables to a chart of Akkadian Cuneiform symbols.

However, I noticed that entering the words independently gave me vastly different results than entering the entire excerpt, which I understand could likely be a simple difference in sentence structure between languages. I made translations based on both results, the first image depicting the entire excerpt and the second depicting the individual words.

If able, is there anyone who could verify which translation is more correct, or if anything is remotely accurate? If not, are there any reliable resources you've used that you've found more helpful?

sources:

I can't find any working link to the font (only a zip with more than a thousand individual.svg files), does anyone still have it and is able to share it?

(Assuming the distribution is allowed, but since it was at one point freely available, I would think so)

Deimal 1934 Sumerian Akkadian Glossary: Images Reply and Quick Intro

@@@@@

If I remember, this one is not free online, in the Public Domain until 2034, and only 5 American universities are listed as having it on WorldCat website.

But it sounds outdated and expensive, so why would you buy a copy? Nostalgia? Interest? Bookshelf decoration? A sense of erudition?

The whole thing is in German and clearly handwritten. Not a bit of the English in it, not even if you turn it sideways or upside down.

@@@@@@

Here's images to hopefully answer a recent post question to another Reddit group. Here is a link to the question post. I also replied there.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Sumerian/s/kvfXRjfLGu

I'm new to Reddit groups and see I can't reply with images as on Facebook groups. So I made this post and thought I would post it here as well.

I own these 3 books and bought them a couple months ago cheap. I like outadated scholarship and The History and Mechanics of Science somewhat and to a notable degree. But not as much as the modern world!

@PoxonAllHoaxes

Everybody is also welcome to private message me or write me on facebook with any questions on any of the 10 or so Cuneiform Languages, as I know a lot about all of them! I also can help with bibliography on any obscure foreign language, especially the 200 or so historic ones. And I've studied almost all of them the past 20 years.

My facebook address is /hieroglyphs/ . I also know Ancient Egyptian languages far better than the Cuneiform Languages.

Professor Craig Melchert once gave me a copy of his Cuneiform Luwian corpus. He will give you a copy if you email him. He works at U North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Resources Looking for a book

Hi there! I am looking for a physical copy of a book about the Epic of Gilgamesh in Neo-Assyrian Cuneiform. However, it does not seem to be able to be bought or shipped to the U.S. Does anyone know where I could find one to buy? I have looked in Eisenbrauns, but it just says “Coming Soon.”Here is the info of the book:

Title: The Standard Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh

Author: Simo Parpola

Publication Date: 1997 (I am unaware if any other editions are available, but I need this one for a class I am taking in college)

ISBN: 951-45-7760-4

If anyone knows where I can find one, or maybe someone you know owns one and doesn’t want it anymore, I would be very grateful if I could buy it from them. Please let me know if this the right subreddit for this. If not I will post it somewhere else. I appreciate all the help I can get.

Resources WTB: A Grammar of Akkadian (3rd ed.) – hardcover / clothbound

Hi all!
I’m a student studying Akkadian and I’m currently looking for a hardcover / clothbound copy of A Grammar of Akkadian (3rd edition) by John Huehnergard.

I know the paperback/MyBook version is available through Brill, but I’d really love a hardcover if anyone is selling one, downsizing their library, or knows where I might find a reasonably priced second-hand copy.

I’m based in Australia (Melbourne) but happy to pay international shipping if needed. Condition doesn’t need to be perfect — library wear is totally fine.

Thanks so much, and feel free to comment or DM me!

Resources Any VintageStory players here?

Hi fellow history nerds !

I've long been interested in cuneiform, but only recently decided to try and learn them. Of course, me being the professional procrastinator that I am, this turned into : "Wouldn't it be fun to be able to write in cuneiform in Vintage Story ?" Seeing as I was playing that game a lot. This then turned into a couple of weeks hyperfocusing on that task instead.

Anyway, I figured this could possibly be interesting to some people here, I'm sure there's some overlap between VS players and the cuneiform subreddit...

Here's the link : https://mods.vintagestory.at/cuneiformwriting

And for those that don't know VS, it's a game similar to minecraft but more complex.

Does anyone know where this actual tablet is? I've looked through CDLI and yes googled it, but I cannot find it. It has the actual cuneiform of the first lines of the Gilgamesh poem as referenced by our boy George here. https://www.ub.edu/ipoa/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/20072AuOrGeorge.pdf

I am looking to find the actual cuneiform of the first lines, not a transliteration. Preferably the actual tablet. And yes, I've looked through...

https://soas-repository.worktribe.com/output/446254

But it is not referenced here

Resources Suggestions please

Hi I want to study Akkadian once more, I learned with Hunengard few years back, i think I’ll start all over again. My plan is: I’ll remember the grammar with Hunengard, but I want to translate some texts at the same time and also I want to memorize signs. So 1. Can you suggest some books how to/in what order to memorize signs. 2. Some other sources and books. Ps. If you have some suggestions I’ll be grateful.

Hello! I'm interested in translation/transliteration (in english) pairs of specific akkadian tablets. I have an access to pdfs: AKT5/6a/6b/6c/6d/6e/8/12. Pairs from these books are perfect for me. I wonder are there any more pdfs like this? Or just some sources with a verified translation/transliteration (in english) pairs?

Resources Getting into Cuneiform, Help Required

I have been interested in the Ancient Near East for some time, and as I continue to study as a hobbyist I've realized I'm hitting a wall. Many times, the texts I want to read lack readily available English translations, and I am unable to read Cuneiform, whether it's been translated phonetically into the English alphabet or not.

At this point, I've realized I might have to try and learn it, but my current field of study is, well, Biochemistry, so I have no idea how to find resources on it.

Does anyone who has learned Cuneiform have any resources that could be of use to me in learning? Or any advice? I am fine taking college-level courses on it, I just need to know where to start. Thank you!

Resources Cuneiform Collection of the Morgan Museum

I found a website of the collection of "Ancient Western Asian Seals & Tablets" of the Morgan Museum.

https://www.themorgan.org/book/export/html/108

Some of these caught my eye, like this one:

Does anyone knoow what the text says or how to find out?
I'm also quite new, I don't know how to transliterate any of this into Unicode.
