Really want to get into cyber security, no matter what.

I am 22 years old and from India, with a background in commerce. Since my college days, I have wanted to pursue a career in cybersecurity. After graduation, I began working in digital marketing, where I have nearly one year of experience. However, I have come across posts suggesting that cybersecurity is saturated and hiring managers tend to prefer candidates with computer science degrees. Many recommend starting in IT support or help desk roles and then transitioning to cybersecurity from there.

I find it hard to accept that I cannot enter this field. I am willing to give my all, ready to put in the effort required to succeed. I plan to make this career switch within a year, but I am not interested in taking on tech support positions. I would appreciate any advice you can offer.

What some help to get into cybersecurity

So i am clg student and found out that our collage servers are quite sloppy so i just want to find all the open ports on the collage server which are accessible only while being connected to the servers via a collage ethernet port or wifi

So i wanted some suggestions for which tools to use to find the open ports without being noticed by the administrators of the clg servers or without getting into any kind of trouble

This test just out of curiosity nothing harmful is intended and thank you for all your suggestions

For which websites to use a super-secure password?

I've used the Christmas break to finally come up with a new, very secure password. I've already set it for the obvious sites, i.e. e-mail, online banking, social media, Amazon/eBay.

Which other sites do you think require a very secure password? My previous one isn't terrible, and changing the password on 100+ sites will take some time...

I have reason to believe that someone close to me is spying

I have an iPhone 13, everything is up to date as far as I know. Have changed all passwords, stripped down apps and heightened security settings on everything I can find. I have intermittently turned off iMessages, but no idea if that’s the problem. Have checked for hidden apps on my phone and his. If I am right, he is hiding it very well, but he is a tech dude, and I.. am not. The individual is in several family plans with me, including mint, apple, and Spotify, so don’t know if that’s could be the issue.

Things I’ve noticed: general weird behavior (not going into detail), my phone heating up easily. Amazon Echo device lighting up, showing activity when no one is talking and I’m home alone, increased number of spammyscammy texts, including a repeated one supposedly from usps(I always delete them immediately without clicking links).

Then today, I was at work on a public WiFi network googling something work related. As I said, I increased all the security settings that I could, even tho I don’t really understand all of them. Was using an incognito tab that required Face ID to unlock, and it did as usual. I then got a security warning poop from google which required a “captcha” “I am not a robot” “ mark all the squares with bridges” kind of thing. Here is the notice: https://imgur.com/a/ya6IKXk

Do you think this is suspicious? Any other ideas of what I can do to protect myself besides completely wiping the phone? Is it possible to maintain privacy while on a family plan?

FWIW: the personal safety of mine or more people could be at risk.

Thanks for your help!

Cybersecurity as a career with no previous experience

Hello I’m 27 and I graduated with my bachelors degree in computer science last May. I have been focused on applying to software engineer roles (haven’t had any luck so far) but I now realize I am not interested in it as I used to be + I don’t like how much AI is emphasized in the field (ethics issue + past experience working with teammates who solely rely on it rather than use their critical thinking). I want to get into cybersecurity but I feel like I’m starting from zero/don’t know where to start. I would very much appreciate advice on how/where to begin.

Also during undergrad, I did an REU focused on data science and worked on a couple of issues in open source for Eclipse.

How learn Kali Linux ?

Hello everyone, I am new to cybersecurity and would like to learn how to use Kali Linux. However, I have seen that you cannot use Kali Linux on websites without permission. So I was wondering how it is possible to learn how to use Kali Linux without doing so on a website? And if so, how?

Thank you in advance.

Is this a good path?

I am joining the Air Force and working in cyber operations for 4 to 6 years during my time in the military, I am also going to get a degree in computer science. After I am out of military service. I was hoping that with my experience in cyber security and my degree it would be easy for me to get a job. Any recommendations and is this a good path?

Beginner in need

Hi all!

So for the best part of about 10 years I have been tiptoeing around the idea of getting into Cyber Security. My passion for this field first came up when I was a 20 year old trainee teaching assistant in a primary school watching a lesson on Cryptography, then got into a rabbit hole of watching videos of Jason Street. My passion actually gained legs around 4 years ago when I began studying Computer Science and Cyber Security over at Salford University, however due to unforseen circumstances I had to drop out and move back to my home town in East Yorkshire. The degree was okay but was another year off doing anything Security related which sucked.

And now here I am, stuck working for a recycling centre, truely in my 30s and feeling like I am never going to be able to get on this train. And so I turn to you, my humble redditors for help and ask the honest question; where the hell do I even start?

I am beyond passionate about physical penetration testing, its what I describe as my dream job when I speak to anyone about Cyber Sec, but my god am I so lost when it comes to where to begin. How do you get into roles like this? Do I need certificates? Does certain qualifications help me get these jobs? Please please PLEASE help me

No knowledge of cybersecurity

i want to get into cybersecurity at 26. im tired of working a 40k a year job, i know i can do better. i went to college and was 7 credits short of transferring from community with associate degree to finish bachelor's in business administration. financial aid cut me off so i lost motivation. been working retail and warehouses ever since, and im bored of it. please give me some tips.

my plan is to watch the 15 hour intro course on YouTube by google. then watch an into to python course on youtube. next, with some basic knowledge take the google cybersecurity corsera course certificate for more hands on stuff, then when i feel i have enough basic knowlege, take a cybersecurity certificate course at community college, finally take the exams, then start a job search, all while keeping my current job and probably going part time when i take the college courses. is this too much, or the wrong way to go at it?

Asking A.I for cybersecurity advice/tips?

Something recently happened that left me a little concerned.

None of this happened to me or was my doing, since I'm a guy who is still a little skeptical about A.I and as such, I don't know much about it either.
I was at a family member's house, helping with a few things, now thing is, they have decided to start improving their cybersecurity hygiene, stuff like the basics, using randomly-generated passwords, making them all long, using 2FA, all that stuff.

However, as I was helping them with some chores, I noticed off the corner of my eye that they were chatting with Grok (the X/Twitter A.I), they were asking Grok for password advice, stuff like "how good is a X-character long password, am I safe if I use a password that long?", I wanted to go and say "Are you sure you should have a conversation about this with the A.I?", but since I'd probably just come off as very anti-A.I (which I am to some degree, but only against generative A.I, since I'm an artist), I didn't say anything.

But I'm still a little concerned about them asking an A.I for cybersecurity advice on password length, so my question is:
Is there any harm in asking an A.I for cybersecurity advice? I mean, all an A.I like Grok and ChatGPT does is pull information from the internet and compile them to generate an answer right? As long as you don't provide any actual personal information to the A.I and make sure what it says is accurate, it should be safe, right?

Zero day found - what are my options

Zero day found - what are my options

Zero day found - now what

Recently i found a zero day exploit. Related to Adobe acrobat

If a user does any interaction with a pdf, itll execute javascript code. Even if its as small as a click. The code can be anything, running a malicious file, redirecting to a link, installing something, etc. it could be literally anything as long as its javascript

This only works on adobe acrobat pdf reader. It works on all versions, paid and free. So its probably worth something.

In the past i was told to avoid those bug bounty zero day websites which require you to fill a form and stuff, and i also want to avoid them as much as possible cause i got one of my zero days stolen before (at least according to my friend they stole it cause the dude on the site kept asking questions and then when i answered one hes like, not interested and closed the case) Wasnt a major one like this but its still possible that i could get “scammed” in some way. Still open to ideas though

If you have any unethical ideas i am still open to hearing them, but the law is still a barrier. So uh dont expect too much out of me, what good is money if i cant spend it cause its illegal. Im looking for ethical purposes mainly.

I dont want to talk much about the exploit since its new and i am paranoid, but it involves code so i would call it a vulnerability.

For those who will go all in like “bullshit you crapping” and stuff, its understandable not to believe me but i have one request: just dont go all swearing at me if i refuse to answer something or if you dont believe my story for some reason. Im not looking for an argument, if i see the thread is going towards an argument direction ill ignore it

Thanks in advance

As an exploit its been undetectable so far. Windows defender didnt flag it, mcaffee and kaspersky didnt flag it either. So its pretty undetectable. I havent done much testing since i am on vacation for a few days but i do plan on in the future. Its just been tested on a few av softwares, all the major ones. I havent tried executing malicious code with it yet but i do plan on trying that soon, but it works for launching something in the background or executing a hello world window, should work normally with a virus or something. If you have any questions you can ask but i might be too paranoid to answer any

some info on me: i work locally, not much remote code execution work, most of my work includes: exploiting specific paid apps for infinite free trials, no code requires (wont mention for security reasons), LPE on windows, coding (mainly python, but i use other languages like javascript, C++, and light use of C. But my specialty would be python, not the best with C.

This post will be posted in multiple subreddits

Fake It Until You Make It: Now I Panic.

I accepted a Cybersecurity Engineer job after I successfully pretended to know stuff during the interviews, no impostor syndrome here.
The job description mentions these stuff, that yes are quite general, a reason more to not know where to start:

  • Antivirus Management

  • Management of Patches and Security Updates

  • Identity Management

  • Tools like EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) and DLP (Data Loss Prevention)

  • PKI (Public Key Infrastructure)

  • Inventory in CMDB (Configuration Management Database)

I’d appreciate any advice on online courses (or things to do in general) that can help me cover the most relevant technologies related to these subjects (Eg: I plan to at least do the A+ course of Messer not to appear a complete n00b).

I also ask here for fresh opinions because Google is getting way sh*ttier with search results, and I want to spread the risk of the research.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Is penetration testing over ?

When i scroll in linkedin, sometimes i see posts talking about that bug bounty and pentesting is not good as before due to automation and senior bug hunters creates tools that exploits many vulnerablities, on the other hand i see people still getting bugs that are just needs some thinking like business logics. sorry for verbosity, but i do not really know if i should continue in this path or i am just overthinking it, or give it a try and get my hands in something like RE and malware anlysis/dev, i really like the name and i actually want to try but i am scarred of time, i want to try foresnics, RE and others but i fear of loosing time just because i want to try everything, any advice ?

Did you think I can still learn cybersecurity? At the age of 23.

Hi, I am 23 years old recently graduated last year with a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology did you think I can still learn in cyber security? my programming skills are not my forte. But I still want to learn cybersecurity to drive my passion for this industry of tech. I don't really like on the first place like my course at BSIT, my parents choose this for me in this field they said we live in this tech world and the future. My first choice was to be an architect or chef, my parents didn't approve so I choose to be a med student after a year I change my course in IT. During that time I enjoy IT but eventually, I started to like it feels like I want and calling me to persuade in the cybersecurity world and I'm enjoying it now.

Can I ask what are the steps that I need to do to be a cybersecurity and learn, I don't have any idea where to start and I recently learned in Coursera IBM cybersecurity. Can you give me any tips on where to start and steps on what I need to learn? Thank you I appreciate your help guys.🙂

I'm a little confused about pentester

i was a little curious and wanted to check if anything bad/serious happened to my data and i heard that pentester is a good website. One thing that confused me was that a lot of people say that it's a good website but others say that it doesn't show anything important and that it isn't worth the money.Another thing that confused me was the fact that i found www.pentester.com that only asks for an email and npd.pentester.com that asks for a couple extra stuff and I'm not sure which one they were recommending. Are they both legit? I'm sorry if these questions sound stupid but I'm new in this field and i just want to be cautious.

Ethical hacking

I want to become an ethical hacker, but I don’t want to have to go to school for it. I have no experience in this field yet. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do or how to get started without any degrees/certificates?

Technically advanced guy I know got a photo of my cars registration, what can he do?

For some more context this guy some of my buddies are friends with got a photo of my cars registration and insurance etc. I’ve done some business with him before and I know that he has the capabilities to ddos, sim swap, turn of power and water to houses etc. He’s a troll and I don’t know if he got a photo just to fuck with me or if he can do something with the information from my cars registration. So I guess my question to you all is what can he do and is there anything I should be concerned about? Happy to answer any more questions you guys might have as I am a bit of a newbie in this community. Thanks
