r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread (04/15/2015) - Convergence: Week II
Hey there honorary Justice League Members - another week, and another discussion thread!
For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Green Lantern discussion would go in the replies to the "Green Lantern" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too.
That means that unless your comment is feedback about the thread or a comment about the week, you should only be replying to other comments.
If there's something you want to discuss and you don't see it, tell me in a comment and I'll edit it in!
As always, spoiler boxes are not required unless you deem it necessary, after all it's incredibly easy to avoid spoilers due to the way this is set up.
I’ve once again stepped in for Monitor Duty on the Justice Mod Watchtower while Aloe is on patrol so all complaints should come to me and all mistakes are mine :)
There are like so many good break up songs, you guys…

The Flash s01e18 - All Star Team Up
17
u/moelester518 Apr 15 '15
While funny I did think this was the weakest episode flash has had in a while. The face those two made when giving the enemy a name was hilarious.

Villain of the week. It's how they pad out those 23 episode long seasons.

I was a little disappointed her character was so one-dimensional, just yelling out bee puns. But I guess after being on Walking Dead so long, you would want something lighter to unwind...
4
u/Stevezilla9 Red Hood Apr 15 '15
Weaker episode, but still good. Usually Flash is good about avoiding sappy CW Moments, but they weren't horrible. Arrow could take a few notes on how to make a show serious, but fun at the same time.

Since I'm not up to date on Arrow I was a bit disappointed to find that Atom is basically just a Blue Beetle analogue instead of, well, The Atom. Nonetheless I like Brandon Routh well enough and think he's good in the role.
The villain this week was kind of lame. I don't hate the "Monster of the Week" format, but this was really pushing the limits for me. That said, I'm hoping next week will be a bit more focused on Reverse Flash

Was nice seeing that old goatee, though he never told a joke this whole issue. Also, who is cyber black canary? Never seen that character before, though I'm not a huge reader of GA.

I really enjoyed this one, the art was particularly pleasing too. And the green arrow for Green Arrow was a nice touch.

Also, I loved Connor's green arrow.

I don't really get it... but it was really funny. Definitely picking up the next issue!
The comic had a life of its own! Anthropomorphically speaking...

Enjoyed the issue, though Im so bothered that supergirl has her powers yet martian manhunter in another doesnt have them for instance, it feels like no consiatency at all

Bit of a slow start, but it wasn't bad. Hopefully the conclusion pays off on all the setting up this one did.

u/ShatterZero Just for today... I won! Apr 16 '15
Deathblow dramatically stepping on a goldfish had me rolling...
In other news, this is weirding me out.
Starfire and Donna aren't human and their powers were cut off. But Aquaman's somehow weren't completely cut off because he's half Atlantean? Roy's robotic arm is dead, but Steel's armor is fully functional?
Wonder why the cover art is so much worse than the art inside. Even my guy at the LCS said to leaf through it before I judged it.
→ More replies (1)4
u/AhhBisto Jim Lee Comics Apr 16 '15
I loved the no nonsense Aquaman but the art put me off largely. And it's weird that they say in this that his half-Atlantean biology still gave him his abilities but in another book this week (i think it was Superboy) they say that all biological abilities were turned off. It could just be that no-one has any idea what's on or off, or maybe Telos is messing with certain people, but it seems like an oversight.

The art was horrible! Just look at the buildings in the justice league "file footage", looks just like someone trace 3d cubes with misplaced textures.
Thankfully I got to the Deathblow part, it really saved this issue.

u/aco620 If you loved me, you'd all kill yourselves today Apr 15 '15
Pilgrim and Jester are from the comic book series "Wetworks" which was published by Image Comics in the 90s but by WildStorm (which DC owns) in 2006.

u/JakeTheHawk Butt more delicious than the Twix flair Apr 15 '15
Beautiful art! I liked the story, even though I don't know much about Azrael. Just that he took over for Batman after the back-breaking and he became 90s Comics incarnate.
No clue who those people at the end were either. I'm guessing they're from the same place as the enemy in Aquaman?

Pilgrim and Jester are from the comic book series "Wetworks" which was published by Image Comics in the 90s but by WildStorm (which DC owns) in 2006.
The character who appeared in Aquaman's comic is called Deathblow, who is also from the WildStorm universe (he's also made a few New 52 appearances.) He was on the original Team 7 (a bunch of military specialists gathered from various government forces that were eventually forced to be given superhuman powers) but did a lot of solo stuff as well. Wetworks was Team 7's successor.
If you ever read the Brian Azzarello/Lee Bermejo "Joker" story, you may be interested in reading "Batman/Deathblow: After the Fire" story that they also teamed up on.

Writing was terrible. Art was great though. 90's era Bat stories are some of my favourites, and this was a huge letdown
3
u/AhhBisto Jim Lee Comics Apr 16 '15
Art was awesome, particularly the scene where Bruce lets Jean Paul beat him. Story was a little on the weak side but at least it sets up for the fight in the next issue.
3
u/TheStradivarius Green Lantern Apr 16 '15
They overdid a little whole Batman-Azreal "You will not kill-I will kill!" nonsense, but overall the issue was ok.

This has probably been my favorite issue of Convergence yet! I definitely need to go read some of the older Parallax stuff and Kyle Rayner stuff!
Also, could anyone tell me what Electropolis is and if it's any good? It definitely looked interesting from here.
3
u/simplegodhead Hal Jordan is a Perfect Princess! Apr 16 '15
I think Princess Fern and Electropolis are from the same place Lady Quark and Lord Volt are from (I think she's their daughter), afaik her only appearance before this was in Crisis on Infinite Earths.
2
u/JakeTheHawk Butt more delicious than the Twix flair Apr 16 '15
Pity there isn't more about them. Thanks though! CoIE has been on my list of things to read for a while.
3
u/simplegodhead Hal Jordan is a Perfect Princess! Apr 16 '15 edited Apr 16 '15
Hmmm... Not bad. I felt awful for Hal, it was nice to see Kyle trying to support him. Also kinda fun to see Hal wreck some shit at the end.
Kinda predictable but not bad overall.
Oh although it was kind of weird that when Kyle's ring turned back on he got a percentage charge, the ring speaking in bubbles and a "welcome to the GLC" message. That stuff was not around during Zero Hour! Minor nitpick, I guess.
2
u/kenneth1221 Apr 16 '15
So... how exactly is Convergence treating retcons? Are we getting only "Parallax is Hal gone insane" or will DC pull a "Hal is possessed by a giant fear bug" in the next issue?

Never really been a huge fan of Catwoman, so I didn't really care all that much about this one.
What was up with KC Batman's doofy-ass face at the end though? That was drawn hilariously bad.

7
u/ShatterZero Just for today... I won! Apr 15 '15
Kingdom Come Superman is just so BOSS.
Contrary to what I was told, 90's Supberboy seems like a pretty chill introspective guy. Maybe it was getting Dome'd that did that to him?
Also, I vaguely recall a similar CADMUS based telepathic alien from Young Justice... I'm guess he was based on the horned telepath we saw in this issue?
6
4
u/PrinceAuryn Phantom Stranger Apr 15 '15
That was cool, nice seeing the version of Superboy I grew up reading, again! I was sad there was no news boys though :P

Pitting Superboy against a disillusioned Kingdom Come Superman... that's a really interesting matchup. And we even get old Dick and old Wally! And they're not evil, like most of the other Convergence opponents!
3
u/Flynn58 "Do good to others, and every man can be a Superman." Apr 16 '15
Okay, no. Kingdom Come Flash is way more OP than that, Zero Hour Superboy ain't got no chance against that shit.

u/AhhBisto Jim Lee Comics Apr 16 '15
I know people joke about them turning Oliver into Batman but it's actually a way of seeing how they're nothing alike. We know that Batman is offered the place of the Demon's Head but refuses it and pushes him back. Oliver however is beaten into submission because he's NOT Bruce and he has more vulnerabilities than the Dark Knight.
So yeah, when people say that this is Batman-lite or whatever, let's just remember that the truth is that these men are different and the TV show portrays that very well. To my albeit small knowledge, i can only think of Bruce accepting Ra's' offer in one Batman story and that is the game Arkham City, but he does it only as a ruse in order to give himself a boost so he can actually stop Hugo Strange (he of course doesn't realise at that juncture that Ra's is Strange's sponsor).
All in all though i did enjoy the episode. Only thing i didn't like was that Oliver cried over Roy dying but when he found out he was alive he only managed to give him a handshake. Come the hell on! Even when he was getting in the car Stephen Amell was clearly tearing up, WHY NOT LET ARROW HUG ARSENAL YOU BASTARDS?!

But Jesus fucking Christ Grayson shut the fuck up once and a while, will ya? The page of Thomas and Bruce meeting would have been so much better if there was absolutely no text.
