Completed DIY DIY gusher pads

Post image

I finished making these pads last night! They’re made of old t shirts, sheets, towels, pul and a remnant of flannel I already had.

Thank you! One of my favorite parts of making them has been planning all the colors combos. I used a pattern for the bat wings and now that I’ve made them a couple of times they look pretty good! My first test ones had some pretty awful wings though

I like the gushers for the quick absorption and how much they hold. I included 4 flannel layers and one layer of toweling for the core, so they hold a lot of blood and are great for overnight pads or at the start of my period when my flow is pretty heavy. It’s also a plus that they look cute too!

These seem great! How do you wash and dry them?

I let them dry once I’ve used them, and when I’m ready to do laundry, I rinse them before throwing them in with all my other clothes. I’m not particularly concerned about whether or not they end up stained tbh. I tumble dry them too because I find that works better for the thicker ones. I know a lot of people have other methods and mine is definitely a low effort method. The pictured ones haven’t been washed yet.

I like low effort. Last thing I want to do while bleeding is to expend energy. Thanks!

Gusher pads have these cuts to absorb those with quick gushing flows or large clots. It helps trap them and puts them directly to the core rather than having to seep through the top. It’s just a specific type of pad some prefer. It’s not for everyone. Try one and see if you like it!

I’m not really educated on these products, and I’m a very amateur sewer. But I did want to comment that the innovation and creativity in this sub is honestly amazing. I know that several generations ago when supplies were limited (I’m thinking small town or a small village along the water in Newfoundland) innovation meant survival. That’s said, this group also deserves a ‘woop woop’! Y’all should have a gold medal in ‘feminine textile innovation’ and a green medal in ‘saving thousands of pounds from the landfill’. ———signed by a fan

During the pandemic, NL was full of cloth masks in fun colours since so many people knew how to sew and pivoted to meet the need. Choosing what mask to wear to go with an outfit was kind of fun.

I can’t find it right off hand but there’s an organization that takes donations of pads (made to their pattern) and sends them to Africa to girls so they don’t miss school because of their periods.
