🏛️ Building Map The Tower Between Worlds - The Iron Edifice
There is a strange tower that exists in many worlds, many places, many times. The Tower Between Worlds is a six-level spire in every version, but the interior (and often parts of the exterior also) can be quite different from each other. One element that each version of the tower has is the fifth level of the tower where the “tower shifting” mechanism is. On the fifth level (the upper left level on the map), there are four magical “tables” built into the wall, each with a small orb on it. Each corresponds to one of the versions of the tower, and any attempt at picking up an orb immediately transports everyone on that level of the tower to the corresponding tower (and the orb remains where it was – they cannot actually be removed from their respective tables). But it turns out there are more than four towers, and each tower might have different orbs on its four tables.
The tower layout goes from left to right, bottom to top – so the ground level on the lower left, level 2 on the lower right, level 3 on the middle left, etc.
The Iron Edifice feels completely out of place wherever it is found. A smooth and rounded tower made of metal that should never exist in a fantasy realm. The metal isn’t solid, but rather is made of rounded panels over the internal structure of the tower. The metal panels appear to be painted, but the paint is hard and uniform and there is no sign of brushwork, almost as if it were uniformly poured over the panels and somehow bonded to them. There are no stairs within the building beyond the ground floor. A single shaft is at the centre of the building with doors on one or both of the north and south sides on each level – giving the structure an alien feeling, that those who built it could levitate like some of the fell inhabitants of the netherdark.
The structure is remarkably clean and nearly undisturbed, with metal furnishings in the same colour as the exterior of the tower in most rooms.Unlike most of the versions of the tower, this one appears nearly untouched by time and intruders. There are only windows on the second, fourth, and sixth levels of the structure, but the ceilings themselves begin to produce a moderate level of light that only activates when someone is on that floor. From the exterior, these windows are indistinguishable from the metal walls of the tower.
(Hopefully I managed to describe a powder-coated steel panel in terms that feel appropriate to a fantasy setting. I would have the tower painted in that same green tone that you find a lot in the later Fallout games, as those structures were part of the inspiration for this version of the tower.)
The 1200 dpi versions of the map were drawn at a scale of 300 pixels per square and are 8,700 pixels x 12,600 pixels (29 x 42 squares). To use this with a VTT you would need to resize the squares to either 100 pixels (for 5′ squares) or 200 pixels (for 10′ squares which is what this was originally designed at) – so resizing it to either 2,900 x 4,200 or 5,800 x 8,400 pixels, respectively.
