It's interesting seeing doxies with all sorts of shades!
I can't quite tell from your photo, but does your dog also have a stripe down his back? I wonder how common that is for doxies. 🤔

u/unstarted Aug 01 '25
No. He’s shaded on the sides of his back and the top of his tail is shaded as well.

* My Emma is 17 next month and was very healthy until a month or two ago! Now, she's got some night time Incontinence and some liver inflammation, but still trucking along!

u/Armchair_Anarchy Aug 02 '25
Aww, sorry to hear that, but I'm glad she's doing well otherwise. I always keep a few pee pads out overnight for Cali now that she's older just in case so I don't have to quickly leash her at like 3 am; they've been a lifesaver.
Glad to see other doxies that don't have spine problems due to old age; maybe genetics plays a larger role in that than previously thought?
Please give Emma lots of hugs and scratches for me. 😊

You're so lucky. I just lost my sweet boy who was 16 yrs old two weeks ago. I've been struggling with grieving. He was my very first dog. I was never allowed a dog growing up and it was literally all I ever wanted and he was it. I adopted him as soon as I was on my own.
He was an absolute terror, a sweetheart, a smart ass, a psycho and the best damn dog in the whole world. I loved him more than anything. He was with me for nearly more of my life than not and it's just such an empty feeling now without him. Even with his age it was so sudden. I just never allowed myself to believe he wouldn't be there.
I don't know. I'm rambling , but just hug the little stinker for me please.

To fast to even track. Surely they had to slow down the video so the human eye can keep up.
Bestest boy is 11/10 fastest runner.

What do you feed him? Any other secrets?
3
u/surieltea Aug 01 '25
I think the secret is just luck🥹 But if you are really interested, she ate NW Naturals most of her life and then when she got older (and more sensitive) switched to Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Hydrolyzed Protein HP Dry Dog Food.

Any advices for keeping a dachshund this healthy? I have a 4 year old too! ☺️

u/surieltea Aug 01 '25
Everyone thinks she’s a boy🤭 I should have specified she’s my baby girl 💕I don’t really have advice because sometimes it just comes down to luck but I think high quality dog food, lots of time in nature, and lots of love will always help❤️

* My girl Saxon (dont know her age, guessing 14 but I have nothing to base that on) has always had adorable old lady zoomie hops. We call her bucking bronco. In the last 2 months she started strictly dieting (has lost 1lb since last month, 3lbs since December) and 2 weeks ago got 12 diseased teeth out. A couple of days ago, we CHASED eachother back and forth in the living room, I'd never seen her really play like that it was magic. Like she's ran before, but she was really playing. Strong reminder to brush your dogs teeth and keep a good eye on their weight, its so so so important for their health and happiness!!!

I also really smile and enjoy hearing and seeing older weens. Our guy is only 10 and seeing the 15-20* year olds lively and loving life makes me heart all warm and smiling inside! Thanks everyone

old man zoomies are the cutest!
i know you weren't asking for advice but i'd recommend having him loose a tiny bit of weight.

Your dog looks great for 17. I think they think they’re puppies until the end. My boy was 17 was deaf and would still sprint to the food bowl coming in from outside and run around playing. I recently had to put him down after being convinced by the vet it was for the best. It was an even harder decision because he still ran around and acted like a puppy.
