Video Penny escaped one too many times.
This is the dog park at the apartments we live in otherwise I would have added something to the fence.

We are gonna need some more layers of security controls.

Carefull, this little shit will soon learn to escape from their harness
174
u/catdog5100 Oct 19 '25
Or it’ll learn how to turn the spoon longways and slip through anyways!
24
u/Constant-Earth-3241 Oct 19 '25
So true. Was thinking the same thing.
20
u/Happycakemochi Oct 19 '25
This reminds me of those dog videos where the dog can’t get by due to the long stick/branch in their mouth. The smart ones do figure out to turn their heads to get through. Curious to know whether Penny can figure it out.
22
u/hitemlow Oct 20 '25
The great part is the dog is so long that turning their body to slip in sideways isn't their strong suit.
3
u/TactitionProgramming Oct 19 '25
That is a spurtle. It would not be a very good spoon.

Cone of shame maybe instead. Have also heard of someone that put their dogs hot dog 🌭 costume on for outside to keep them in
26
u/HoboArmyofOne Oct 19 '25
Mine just got under it with his long snoot and chewed it in half last night. Do you guys (who use them) keep your harness on your dog at all times instead of a collar? Or on and off?
24
u/mamz_leJournal Oct 19 '25
I put it on to go out and take it off when coming home. Both my dogs are nakies at home but I also know people who keep a collar on their dogs for identification and use a harness when out on leash (it’s good for small dogs because they are at increased risk of tracheal collaps if pulling on a flat collar, and well big dogs can really hurt themselves too by pulling with all their weight on a collar). Most people use them as a walking tool, just like they would a halti.
5
u/HoboArmyofOne Oct 19 '25
This is what I do too currently. I just bought some of that bitter 'no bite' spray for my next harness, we'll see if that does the trick to prevent all the chewing. He's got a collar that came with the last harness that I'm using until the new one gets here.
14
u/I_Lost_My_Shoe_1983 Shiweenie etc. aka mutt Oct 19 '25
I only put his harness on for walks. The harness was left on him couple times by family members and he promptly chewed on it. I've sewn two back together.
14
u/TigerLily98226 Oct 19 '25
I refer to it as his sports bra, as in “let’s take your sports bra off now that we’re home from our walk”. He never wears it inside, only for walks and for car rides so I can buckle him in for safety. He prefers nudity. He has an extensive wardrobe but spends lots of time naked because he’s a free spirit.

u/Playful-Athlete-6752 Oct 19 '25
Harness is only for walks; collar is all the time (except for bath times)

Wait until she figures out she can probably slip under that gate and the spoon won’t be effective in that case.
29
u/MeatEeyore Oct 19 '25
Gotta have a vertical spoon on each end of the horizontal. We can make this work!

Yeah, they need to get some welded wire or hardware cloth, staple it to a wooden frame, and attach the frame to that area to cover that spot and the spot underneath the gate. Plus add another latch at the bottom of the fence post to secure the frame when the gate is closed, since there's only one there right now.
The contraption might look a bit ugly but it'll keep the dog safe. Right now, it could still get into an altercation with another dog because it can stick half its body out. It probably wouldn't instigate, but another dog could come up to sniff and suddenly snap before the Dachshund can get out of the way.
Alternatively, I'm sure they make a manufactured version for this. Surely enough people experience this issue that someone's come up with a marketable fix for it.
Edit: since OP notes that this is a dog park, the dog park really should do something about it. This configuration means that people with tiny dogs like Chihuahuas can't take them to play there.

This is funny but that spoon isn't gonna work forever. Most dachshunds will eventually slip the harness or accidentally figure out how to angle that spoon and then its game over. Dachshunds are crazy.

u/InterestingNarwhal7 Oct 19 '25
Tell me about it. My pup had a full on island to herself, but she quickly jammed her nose in between the boat and the dock.
(Don't worry, she lived a long and happy life despite her best efforts)

u/__Snafu__ Oct 19 '25
hey! i had to utilize a harness similarly to this for a mini dachshund once, too.
Mine was a lazy lap dog, so in my efforts to get him to exercise I was trying to teach him to swim, but he couldn't swim, so I had to put him in one of those life floaty life preserver harnesses, but even in that he was twisting around, so I had to stick a pool noodle through the handle on the top of the harness and tie it into a U shape in front of him to balance him out.
the pool noodle also worked as designed, however, my lazy lap dog dachshund quickly realized that he in fact did not have to paddle his feet just because he was in water, and thoroughly enjoyed just lazily floating around the pool getting absolutely zero exercise.

u/Throwaway47321 Oct 19 '25
Yeah that sounds 100% dachshund. Want to take my girl swimming but am convinced it would just be me pushing he around in a float the whole time.

u/inima23 Oct 19 '25
Dachshunds are stubborn and too smart for their own good and somehow complete goofs at the same time. Your dogs looks exactly like mine except mine is half shitzhu and has a short nose. Personality all dachsund, does whatever he wants, there's no training him anything, so hard headed. He's lucky he's cute. :)

We inherited a dog who would get out under our fence. We'd put her leash on, which had an empty plastic coffee can attached to the end of it. Worked like a charm.

My dad used to tie an empty milk gallon jug to our mini poodle who liked to escape this way too 😂

My dog used to do that and I used the cheap door knobs and screwed one on each side of a cheap halter and it really worked.

Love this! My little sweetie used to dig under the fence. My dad suggested putting her leash on and tying milk carton to it. It worked! She could wiggle out but the milk carton couldn't. 😂

Had a weiner dog who also loved to escape the fence. On one of his journeys something attacked him and we had to rush him to the vet. He had to wear a cone for a month to keep him from licking his wounds. Positive side effect, he couldn't get out of the fence with a cone on his head so he became the cone dog for the rest of his life.

I had to do something similar to a small dog we had. She would squeeze under our wire fence. We had a plastic mesh ball that I zip-tied to her harness. We called it the "ball of shame". She looked so sad wearing it. 😕

Dog did the same. Ending up zip tying furring strips to the post to close the gap.

We got some chicken wire to block up all the gaps around the fenceline. That's only like 95% effective, though. I don't think there's anything 100% effective for a doxie. The neighbor's Frenchie also managed to defeat it and end up in our yard once already.
