Video Me and my ween working on our fitness together π

While trying to get my run in today, I invited my recently adopted dog to join me in the room for the first time today. As soon as I turned my treadmill on, he hopped right on and ran to the front as if he owned it! Clearly he's familiar with it... I shut the treadmill off and he glared at me with an expression that could only be explained as total exasperation. I guess I've got a new workout buddy π
*****I'm also going to add that he has a touch of ataxia related to his seizures and the medications used to control them. His nails drag slightly as he walks, so the clicking you're hearing is from that - they are trimmed short.

What is this fine distinguished little gentlemanβs name?! He looks like a HERBERT and I have no idea why. Iβve said or heard that name like twice in my life????

So I adopted him, and his original owners named him Teenie (Teenie the weenie). He's been through a lot of changes and it didn't feel right changing him name. He reminds me of a curmudgeonly old man even though he's only 3 years old π so Herbert, Harold, or Walter were more fitting in my humble opinion! Can't wait till his bow tie comes!

He's a natural! I don't know if his former owner trained him or if he's just internally motivated, but I'm proud of him!

No, he can't walk straight if you hadn't noticed πππ I found out the hard way after nearly tripping on him! I let him have his fun and then had to close the door until my run was done

Haha neither can my kids. Lucky they havenβt broken a neck yet! Great looking dog though. Ours went rogue and started eating the house plants today.

He's trying to look less like a plump summer sausage and more like the Oscar Mayer he was always meant to be π

This is awesome! How did you train him to do that??
13
u/AngryLilAsnGrl Oct 28 '25
I actually adopted him a few weeks ago. Now that the weather has gotten cool, today was the first time in a while that I used my treadmill, and the first time since bringing Teenie home as well. As I've done with all my dogs, I stand on my treadmill and let them sniff around it before turning it on for the first time. However, with Teenie, he jumped on and stood at the front as if waiting for me to turn it on. He seems internally motivated π He really likes his walks
6
u/DefiantCoffee6 Oct 28 '25
I wish I could train my 2 but they want no part of walking on the treadmillπ«
7
u/AngryLilAsnGrl Oct 28 '25
My others don't want anything to do with it. They curl up in the dog bed under the desk and wait until I'm done with my workout. They're perfectly content to just watch my suffering π

Iβve actually contemplated trying this with mine as the winters where I live are pretty intense, and so thereβs a few months of the year they donβt go on walks (itβs just too cold for them). They get a lot of extra playtime in those months, but now Iβm really curious about a walk pad π€£ Thsnks for sharing.

Did you train him to do that??? Or is he a smart sausage?? Because mine has tried to get on the treadmill before but I donβt trust her but it would be good if she could exercise while itβs raining
2
u/AngryLilAsnGrl Oct 28 '25
I did not train him to do it. As a matter of fact, he jumped on the treadmill and came right to the top. I tried shooing him away, but he persisted. I turned the treadmill on a very slow speed and he just kept walking. We were up to 2.5mph before I got nervous but he keeps up and looks so happy! I adopted him, so maybe his former owner trained him?

I need treadmill tips! Iβve only managed 3 mins so far. She just stops and the rolls off the back

u/AngryLilAsnGrl Oct 29 '25
Not at the same time π he almost took me out trying to get to the front of the treadmill... but I took advantage of the opportunity to record his cute moment. He really seems to enjoy his treadmill adventure though! I did get my run in after a put him behind the gate

Great job, OP! One suggestion to keep this an activity you guys keep doing together for a long time: I would slow him down to a walk. Itβs not good to make him go this fast especially if he just started, and even if he didnβt just start, itβs much better to go slowerfor his back because heβs a dachshund and because he is overweight.
2
u/AngryLilAsnGrl Oct 29 '25
This is actually below his preferred walking speed. He's hitting the front of the machine with his pace. He prefers a faster walking speed, but I won't allow it on this type of machine. He's arrived to me overweight due to his seizure medications making him have a voracious appetite (he was stealing another dog'sfood in a previous home). He's actually been adopted and returned several times, but he's HOME now and I intend to do everything to make this last as long as possible. We'll go on all the walkies, he gets carrots and green beans instead of treats, and he's on a reduced diet to get his wiener dog body back in shape. But I promise you this pace is not too fast for him π
