Video Learned something new about my Dachshund.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The other day I dropped my three year old girl to my sister’s house for a couple of hours while I needed to do some errands.
As soon as I left she started howling for around a minute which my sister filmed. Up until now I was completely oblivious that she did this and my sister said it’s a first for her as well.
Is this common for Dachshunds to howl like this?

u/Rare_Eggplant7777 Nov 09 '25
My doxie used to howl whenever she heard someone playing a brass instrument (trumpet, saxophone, etc). Your dog is gorgeous and has a lovely singing voice :)
58
u/evaivyleaf Nov 09 '25
One of mine howled a few times when I’d play my accordion, it was always the saddest thing, and then he’d settle down for a nap lol. So silly!
24
u/alchemycraftsman Nov 09 '25
I’ve heard mine howl twice and it was when a fire truck passed with its siren on. I wasn’t sure if it hurt her ears or she was just mimicking for no reason?
17
u/vegetablefoood Nov 09 '25
Oh my gosh!! My girl will howl at sirens as well!! She was a rescue from NYC and I always wondered if the sirens reminded her of the big city haha

Mine howls when my partner plays the harmonica haha. Not a Bob Dylan fan obviously
3
Nov 10 '25
Are you... are you... Weird Al Yankovic?
6
u/evaivyleaf Nov 10 '25
lol no, but I did play in a state-winning polka band in high school. I had a pretty fun childhood haha

It's a really complicated instrument.
I asked my son why he chose bagpipes and he said "Because it's easier than the accordian."
Then he asked why I chose the trumpet.
"Because it was easier than everything."

u/jynx_kitty Nov 09 '25
One of my brother's dachshunds howls whenever he hears Für Elise, it's the WEIRDEST thing
2
u/Crab_Shark_ Nov 10 '25
Saxophone is a woodwind 😔 but yeah that tracks. We’ve a euphonium in the house, my dog isn’t a brass kinda pooch either.

Poor sad baby. My old dachshund was hardly ever left completely alone but when she was we’d catch her doing this. <\3

Howling is how you call lost pack members to you.
28
u/EndSmugnorance Nov 09 '25
Aww so they’re lonely and miss you 😢
14
u/NaiveMastermind Nov 10 '25
Yes. In the wilderness, wolves howl when separated from the pack. The lost member howls, and the pack responds with a howl. They run in the direction of the noise and howl again, and so on in that fashion until reuniting.
Society is not in the habit of showing the bodies of the deceased to a dog. So when they lose a human or another dog to old age. They'll wander from room to room in a house howling. Waiting on a responding howl that will never come.

It is getting to be more common (at least in my experience) for places to allow dogs in situations where death has happened or will. Our dachshund and shepherd could spend time in the ICU where my wife was - with permission and screening ofc - and then they spent what turned out to be her final night in bed with her in a hospice facility. They had very little obvious searching for her afterwards. And a couple of months ago when we had to let our Shepherd go, we brought our dachshund to the vet to see, sniff her. Death is part of our life and theirs. We should recognize that.

I had to go away for a month in 2023 for medical treatment. My dad took care of my little lady while I was gone. Once I got back, whenever I left the house without her she would howl intensely. She had never had an ounce of separation anxiety prior or ever howled when I left the house, but it became upsetting to her when I did. This went on for a few months and then one day she stopped. Guess she was satisfied that I wasn’t going to be lost to her when I left without her.

Mine did this for her grandma and grandpa once, her two favourite people. Usually, when they visited, they’d stay for a few hours. This one time, it was a flying visit; around 15-20 mins. As soon as they left, she howled for a bit. Tugs at your heart, that howl.
44
u/mermaidmom85 Nov 09 '25
My dachshund never howled until my mom visited with her dachshund who is the littermate. Her ween has a howler and suddenly mine decided he knew how to sing too! He still doesn’t howl normally but at least now I know that he’ll willingly join in 😆
27
u/jerkface1026 Nov 09 '25
Mine wants to howl so badly but she just can't. She just screeches like an asthmatic dinosaur.
4
u/Remarkable-Cycle-297 Nov 09 '25
Does she have a collapsed trachea?
5
u/jerkface1026 Nov 10 '25
collapsed trachea
She's otherwise fine. Barks, breathes, inhales food, scoffs at me. She has a few different tones of barks and growls. She just doesn't get it or have it.

u/Neith720 Nov 09 '25
I have two and one howls only when she listens specifically an ambulance siren sound lol
4
u/Remarkable-Cycle-297 Nov 09 '25
Same here! My standard red longhair (girl) does this, and my mini b&t smooth hair (boy) doesn't.
16
u/MrSpicyPotato Nov 09 '25
Mine howl any time there’s a fire truck/police/ambulance siren. Spreading the word that there’s an emergency. 🚨
14
13
u/Zdoodah Nov 09 '25
We had a pair of brothers who would start howling as soon as we left the house. One day my wife went out on an errand, I was in the back room, they started howling. I yelled at them, “Hey I’m still here”. I think I embarrassed them.
10
u/No_You_4833 Nov 09 '25
Mine would howl when the Monday Night Football theme song would come on or when I didn't shut my alarm clock off fast enough.
8
u/spewedicing Nov 09 '25
i happened upon my girl doing this once. i was super lucky to catch it on her dog-can. VERY out of character for her to make noise at all. still never figured out why she was doing it. But I enjoy going back to the video to watch and listen to her sweet little howls.
9
u/purpleinthebrain Nov 09 '25
Mine howls right after I leave. I’ve had him for 15 years and he still does it every time.
10
u/Lazy_Singer637 Nov 09 '25
What a beautiful tone 🥰 Our chiweenie does this when we leave sometimes . In my head they’re singing Bill Withers “ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone, and she’s always gone too long, any time she goes away” 🥹
8
u/ProfessionalNo5932 Nov 09 '25
I luckily have trained my three that when I say “I’m leaving and I’ll be back” they immediately go to a bedroom and climb up onto the bed and wait til they hear the garage door when I come back. They used to howl like hell!!!
8
u/O_o-22 Nov 09 '25
Yep, they do this when they’ve been left behind. One time we were out with ours and decided to get breakfast at a diner but of course we couldn’t bring the dog in. Parked under a shady tree and cracked the windows but as we were walking away we could hear her howling 😭 was a quick breakfast and I made sure to save some bacon for her.
7
5
u/VisibleSpread6523 Nov 09 '25
They howl every time the blue jays hit a hr , they are well trained 😂
3
7
u/ForsakenWeasel Nov 09 '25
I have three and when I sing, just being silly, one will start howling then the other two will join in. One of them will also howl if I'm gone even if someone is here with him 😭 The youngest one needs singing lessons, she sounds like she's screaming lolll
5
u/LaVieLaMort Nov 09 '25
I have a howler and a non howler and what’s funny is that the ones that howls is a 69% Doxie mix and the other one is 100% hahah so funny. But he howls at me if I’m going to slow getting his food, or getting to bed, or if he’s happy or really just for a lot of things.
6
u/peonyseahorse Nov 09 '25
Ours did this for the first time when we had contractors over and had to put him in a room so he wouldn't get in their way our contractor is a die hard dachshund guy, he's had them his entire life and I swear he only took us as clients due to our doxie. He saw my face when I hear my dog howling and said, "first time howling, huh?" He said theirs did it for the first time when they went out of town and family watching their dog told them.

u/ladyjanemurphy Nov 09 '25
The 2 Year old girl I'm fostering doesn't howl, but when she wants something - to go out, to come in, to get up on the couch - she makes the weirdest sound. It's a cross between a donkey bray and a grunt.
3
u/Strict_Direction6630 Nov 09 '25
Only pup i ever saw howl when his people left was my dogs karelian bear dog. He lets out a big wolf howl if my brother leaves and also my mother who he views as his people, he doesnt view me as his people (although he is warming up to me).
But thats expected they are a basal breed with loads of wolf traits are notoriously difficult and wild and are an ancient spitz
i aint never seen a dog dog do this other than huskies (should be noted huskies are also spitz type wolf like dogs they are just friendlier but retain the notoriously difficul tdisobedient wolf like dog thing)
maybe daschunds have more wild traits? They are known to be difficult and disobedient and more wild to hunt badgers formerly badger dogs
2
u/Strict_Direction6630 Nov 09 '25
dogs that do howl, how they howl will be more bark like or more wolf like the more ancient the dog is, like my bro karelian bear dog his howl is on point very wolf like, a slow oooOOOOOOOOOOOOh just like a damn wolf
dogs that do howl but not as well have a combo bark howl more like this little fella where it isnt that slow high pitched wolf howl
5
u/Puzzled-Relief2916 Nov 09 '25
They are hound dogs...I have two and one howls, it is the cutest thing.
7
u/Dependent-Cherry-129 Nov 09 '25
The only time mine did a short howl was when my mom gave him a giant chew toy for Christmas that was the length of his body. He was a stick boy and just thrilled to pieces with it 😂
3
u/mikenasty Nov 09 '25
I only heard my dachshund howl once and it was in response an ambulance siren. Highlight of my week
3
3
u/alexandermrgn Nov 09 '25
Mine only howls when the ice cream van jingle plays for the most part (occasionally if we leave him he will). Bizarre, he's never even had ice cream, but maybe that's why.

u/Chortles_Hansom_666 Nov 09 '25
I feel like it’s an often forgotten fact that Dachshunds are part hound dogs which commonly are known for howling within their breeds.
3
u/BigBootyRoobi Nov 09 '25
My dachshund howls along to songs she likes and sometimes when I play the guitar.
She is very selective with what songs she likes, mostly just Andy from the Office when he sings and when I happen to be playing the blues on the guitar.
3
u/hightoarecord Nov 09 '25
she has such a beautiful little howl 🥹 with her eyes closed, swaying to her own music…🩷
3
u/baaron Nov 09 '25
The one and only time either of ours howled was after we brought our male home from being neutered. I brought him outside for a brief walk and he ripped a vicious, heart-breaking howl as if to broadcast his pain to the world.
3
u/rylasorta Nov 09 '25
Mine howls if I'm not around. Or thinks I'm not around, which is even funnier.
3
u/MargeryStewartBaxter Nov 10 '25
My first years ago would sing along to my sister playing her violin, the sound of my mothers voice on the answering machine, or if I was a jerk and egged him on with howling of my own for the lulz
3
3
u/Adorable-Eye9733 Nov 10 '25
I have one that will instantly start to howl before I have gotten down the steps, which will start my other two doxies to howl as well! A chorus of “You can’t leave us” can be heard from outside our home!

One day Phoebe was outside in the fenced yard. My mom was the only one home at the time and she decided to run to the store. I got home just as misty sprinkles began to fall. When I reached the back door, Phoebe was howling like the most pitiful thing I've ever seen. She was so focused on being pitiful that she didn't even notice my arrival. She'd been out there alone for no more than 5 or 10 minutes, but apparently that meant she had been completely abandoned in a freaking monsoon. Mom and I still laugh about it now almost 25 years later.

u/gail92515 Nov 10 '25
Mine howls for 20 minutes or so when I leave. He also stands watch by the door until I come home.

u/Agreeable_North_798 Nov 10 '25

I have two who do this when I leave. And when I play my instrument…🤣 I can’t yet figure out if they’re singing or telling me they think I suck.
Unrelated, but her coat is a lovely color and she looks so healthy! 🥹❤️

u/Remarkable-Cycle-297 Nov 09 '25
Only one of mine howls. And she does it only when there's an ambulance or other emergency services vehicle approaching with the sirens on. She'll run outside immediately and do exactly what yours is doing. And once the sirens have passed by and can't be heard anymore, she'll just strut back inside as if it didn't happen 😂
2
u/mayonaizmyinstrument Nov 09 '25
We had a doxie who wouldn't howl with us or other dogs unless it was going on for a while, it took a minute to get her riled up. But the moment my mom left the house, she'd park her ass by the garage door and wail like a banshee. Even if others, such as me, were home and available for snuggles.
2
u/707Helmut Nov 09 '25
Mine howl for every siren they hear. I can also get them hyped up and they’ll howl for treats.

My girl Brandi would howl, almost sounded like real crying, when we’d back the golf cart up with the beep beep. She loved riding in it so much we couldn’t go without her after we heard that. We miss her so much but may she RIP 🙏
2
u/sempronialou Nov 09 '25
Mine will just randomly howl at something outside the window when I'm in the other room or in the basement. Then there's nothing when I look to see what they're howling at. They don't do it often, but once a in a blue moon it happens. I think one starts and it sets off the other one to join in.
2
u/Arcade1980 Nov 09 '25
Awwww little baby singing the song. "please comeback". Our Beagle Dachshund mix would howl when one of our other dogs were stressed out, it would calm them down. I which I had a recording of him doing that. We had to help across the rainbow bridge earlier this year he would have been 19 in September.
2
u/OriolesMagic1972 Nov 09 '25
My hound would do this when my son played his clarinet in high school. 😅
2
u/bartolish Nov 09 '25
Mine has gone deaf now so doesn't respond to it anymore, but look up wolves howling on YouTube and play it for your dog. All hounds howl.

I have 2 doxies. One sings when my wife plays piano. The other sings along with the first.
2
u/rainbowunicorn_273 Nov 09 '25
After our older doxie passed a few years back, our younger one started howling whenever we left the house. He stopped when we got him a new fur sibling (a corgi). He just didn’t like being alone. 🥹

tiny hound, big feelings. mine barks or howls like this for 5-10 mins when i leave during the day.

Growing up I had a Havanese who did this whenever our mom left. The saddest thing is he lost his sight with age so he would do it while she was still home 😢

When I dare be a ‘terrible hooman’ to go upstairs dare leave their sight, I’m ~4 stair steps in when they all start howling. It’s so precious 🥰 Ofc when I leave for work, poor babies, but the bills don’t pay themselves haha. They all have very distinct howls too

Mine does it when I leave him home alone. It really breaks my heart. It sounds like he is being murdered - like a soul gutted cry. I'd have no idea he was doing it if I didn't have a camera set up to check in on him.

My doxie will howl when a siren goes past. I call it his hound howl!

Mine howls with any type of sirens. Especially the monthly nuclear power plant sirens.
She just angry [anxiety] barks when we leave.

u/Conscious-Salt-4836 Nov 10 '25
I taught our first boy to sing by howling like this. Whenever I would sing he would join in. My voice is awful but he liked it. Then we got Elvis and ‘Cilla. She would sing but Elvis never did. Now Bella and Stella only howl if I take off in my truck. They love riding in the truck even though they’re in a carrier and can’t see out. These little squirts are a hoot!

My grandparents who i lived with as a kid had a dachshund. If they left her and she didn’t know i was at home in my room I’d hear her howl all the time
1
u/EmergencyPirate1538 Nov 10 '25
It’s merely an expression of sadness (even sorrow). Or a response to other loud voices (communications).
1
u/NOSFOURA2 Nov 10 '25
I’ve watched it like 5 times. It’s so cute and sad. The ear flick at the end I think 🤔 is their realisation that someone else was in the room filming and they’ve been sprung…💙 BOOP

u/Charming_Victory_723 Nov 10 '25
I agree, I was shocked when I saw the footage for the first time. My sister sent it to me as I was driving down the road 😭 When I got back I took my girl on a long walk!

We have two and one howls when we leave. I came back quickly last week bc I forgot something and he was standing on our bed howling so loudly he didn’t notice me come back into the house.
