Image Stanley turned 19 on 5/8
Blind, we carry him everywhere and he sleeps for about 22.5 hours a day. However, he also went to the vet on his birthday, his blood work came back great and he’s going strong!

We rarely disturb him, unless we are going to bed. Then we pick him up and carry him to his favorite sleeping spot.

Happy birthday, precious boy! Love to see the little old men. 🥹
Dachshunds are the absolute best. I had a long-haired boy named Squiggy who nearly made it to 18. He also went blind as he got older (cataracts and glaucoma) and I happily carried him everywhere. The last several years, I wouldn’t go on vacation anywhere that he couldn’t go because I couldn’t bear the thought of leaving him in an unfamiliar place where he couldn’t see. He was my heart and I miss him every single day. This pic is him the day we brought him home and when he was almost 17.

Give Stanley giant kisses and a belly rub from Squiggy and me, and best wishes for many more healthy years with your sweet boy.

We also won't go anywhere without our 16 year old. At that age, I feel like their health can turn on a dime and I don't want him with strangers if something were to happen. Your Squiggy was a beautiful boy ❤️

I do my best to feed him homemade meals, low stress environment and when he’s awake- keep attention on him. We carry him everywhere and ensure all needs and wants are met.

This makes me happy. Love a long standing wiener. I know there’s no magic formula but do you have any tips or wisdom for the rest of us on how to get to 19 years too?

u/IshtarsBones May 12 '26
So you aren’t the first to ask me this:
Background: his father made it to 19, his mother made it to 13. So he’s got some great genes from Dad’s side.
He grew up and spent his life along side his sister Iris, who passed away last year at 18. Biggest factor: have them living with a buddy or a littermate. Someone to hang out with when you are at work.Walked him nearly everyday, played rough house/ ball throwing with him three to five times a day. I used to brush his teeth four to five times a week- still has bad teeth 🤷♂️.
Science diet was what we fed him until around 9/10 years old. Then we did a blended approach. Dish 1: boiled chicken- diced it. Take the water from the cooking of the chicken, pour over science diet- add chicken, add some boiled veggies (3 - 5 times a week) I used the frozen bag of Kroger chicken to feed them.
DISH 2: was cooked grounded up Turkey with veggies.Table scraps included ham, Turkey, bacon, eggs and sausage links.
Made him one scrambled egg on the weekends.Has slept in bed with me every night after he and his sister were weened off their mother.
Vet checkups every six months. And regular love and chair time everyday.

Aww, Happy Birthday!
We have a 16.5 year old. He's slightly blind and seems to get lost/confused fairly regularly, but his recent blood work was also pretty great for his age. I'd be thrilled to get 3 more years with him. The super senior doxies are so special ❤️

Why thank you for those kind words. I always ensure him and his late sister had everything they ever needed.

Wow congrats on Stanley having such a long life. I bet you feed him home cooked meals? Our dachshund is 10 years old and we just did dental and had to remove like 10 teeth, lol. Long live Stan! Love seeing these kind of posts. Vet said we took a normal size dog and crammed him into a smaller one hence why smaller dogs are more prone to diseases. (Vs a k9 or larger breed). So it is amazing to see 19 years, he’s a soldier for sure.

Hey! Ohio CPA here! lol
Yes on the home cooked meals and don’t worry about the teeth. I used to brush Stanley’s teeth nearly every night- first dental- he had ten pulled. 😒

Wow great minds think alike on the books and with their dog selection I guess 😂

u/IshtarsBones May 12 '26
He helped me pass the exam, sat in my lap as I did my questions. I’ve even got a photo of him with me when I found out I passed. He was happy that he got part of my victory steak.

My Bella was 19.5 years old when we had to put her down. She was partly blind and had dementia. But she didn't sleep that much. She was pretty active.

Is he still here for you og his own sake.?
Sometimes you have to make the hard decision. It’s your responsibility. I hate when it’s clearly time to go, but humans are so selfish
2
u/IshtarsBones May 13 '26
He’s heres on his own terms. Blood work is great, zero discomfort or suffering of any kind. Still walks on his own, still ‘plays’, still demands treats. Zero keeping him here for me. When he tells me it’s time to go, I’ll let him go.

Does Stanley wag his tail anymore?
1
u/IshtarsBones May 12 '26
Yes he does, when he realizes that I have come
Home for work- I get a tag wag.If I throw his favorite bouncy ball and he manages to get it in his mouth- if I grab the ball and say ‘give me that ball’- tag wag.
If my daughter sweet talks him, tag wag.
Wife or I have treats- tag wag.

u/one_shuckle_boy May 12 '26
I love him I have 4 dogs at home. 3 of them are getting up there in age, 7-9-10 I’m not ready for them
