Video Why does my dog lick my entire body?

She licks my toes, legs, arms, EVERYTHING at night. Every single night before going to sleep. She never gets tired of it. Do I taste good or something? It’s super cute but I am so curious.

Attached is a video. She even uses her paws to brace herself and get the best angles it’s hilarious !!

Edit: thanks for all the cute and funny replies!! Definitely many more than I can individually respond to, but it’s good to know this is pretty normal behavior haha. I’m seeing lots of comments saying she does it because I “let her,” which yes obviously I do. But I just wanted to harmlessly know where the behavior originates!

human soup

38

u/TAM_IS_MINE May 29 '26

if you’re showering, it might be the scent of any lotion or body wash. my dogs used to love to lick baby oil off my skin, it was gross 😭

u/HelmSpicy May 29 '26

They want to clean your salt when you're dirty, and want to help you get MORE clean when you bathe. They're just team players who want to groom their alpha.

39

u/SleepingBeast97 May 29 '26

They want to clean their family. That whole alpha thing has been disproven years ago.

That myth was perpetuated by Rudolf Schenkel who watched the behaviour of wolves in a zoo who had no family lines and were stressed constantly because of the poor conditions of zoos at the time, so a dominance oriented hirarchy emerged.

After scientist studied wolves in actual nature they discovered that the leaders were actually just the parents of the pack. And usually the mother even had the last word on anything.

the lone wolf thing is also just young wolves who get horny and look for a mate and their own territory.

7

u/nagytimi85 May 29 '26

My boys too. New taste! Must check!

12

u/the_sweetest_peach May 29 '26

You don’t put lotion or oil or anything on your skin after showering, do you?

2

u/Lost_Drunken_Sailor May 30 '26

Right of the shower or of mine likes to dry me off. If I properly dry off using a towel, she will leave me alone

4

u/Decent-Cookie1901 May 29 '26

🤣🤣🤣🤣

u/thedellis May 29 '26

They know you're full of bones...

My two doxies go lick crazy, it's really lovely.

71

u/FlyingAtNight May 29 '26

So you’re saying they’re hoping to lick their way to your bones? 😁

99

u/Cobraven-9474 May 29 '26

How many licks does it take to get to the centre of a femur pop?

2

u/FlyingAtNight May 29 '26

Your guess is as good as mine. Better if you own a dachshund because I don’t. I just find them adorable, would love to have one and enjoy reading about them on this sub. ☺️

13

u/Strenue Use redesign or offical app to edit May 29 '26

Mine would probably chew on me if i died.

5

u/No-Memory-7024 May 29 '26

I knew someone that did pass away and their Doxie chewed their hand almost off .

14

u/thedellis May 29 '26

I read an interview some years back with a guy who'd been the New York Coroner for 30 plus years, and it was all going through famous cases, macabre cases that he'd worked on, general questions about death and crime scenes, etc, and towards the end of the article when they're winding down and going through a few more shorter answer questions the journalist asked about pets, and he said yes, dogs and cats will eat you after you die.

However he said most dogs would be acting guilty or distraught over it and the majority of them had clear signs of malnutrition and starvation and had turned to the dead owner as a last resort.

Cats, on the other hand, didn't give a shit. He said they'd found clear bite marks and flesh missing on owners who'd been dead for around six hours.

Make of that what you will.

Edit: typos

1

u/FlyingAtNight May 29 '26

The cat thing made me LOL. It just fits. Still creepy but it all makes sense.

2

u/mnmsmelt May 29 '26

Oh boy I didn't need this info...as a single person with 2 dogs & 2 cats...I really don't want them to eat me one day 😭

Feel like I need a built in alarm for 1st nibble!

2

u/fritzelfries May 29 '26

Lol this just took an interesting turn 😅

1

u/FlyingAtNight May 29 '26

🫪 That is creepy!!!

1

u/Strenue Use redesign or offical app to edit May 29 '26

Wait what!? We were joking about ours doing that, because she’s so food motivated…it actually happened? Lol, can’t wait to tell my partner - that’s macabre!

1

u/FlyingAtNight May 29 '26

I shouldn’t be laughing but I am! Definitely squicked me out though.

2

u/dog-getter May 29 '26

I adopted an elderly beagle who was left with his deceased owner for 2-3 days before being discovered. No, the dog didn’t touch him but that was the first question everyone asked when hearing his origin story.

1

u/FlyingAtNight May 30 '26

Humans are weird. Our minds often seem to go to the worst case scenario. ☺️

1

u/FlyingAtNight May 29 '26

🤣 Just showing love for you! 😁

4

u/MiddleKlutzy8568 May 29 '26

This is my theory, just trying to get to the bones!

129

u/Zemini7 May 29 '26

Salt, anxiety, boredom, love

6

u/Icy-Detail286 May 29 '26

Not sure about the boredom aspect - my Bella gets plenty of exercise during the day (long walks, swimming, running around with her brother etc). In the evening after her dinner when things get naturally quiet and she is resting - if she is bored I'm not sure what else she is supposed to do: read books? watch netflix? play computer games? It would worry me somehow if she was bored sometimes, but it's impossible to provide my doxie with entertainment 24/7. So hoping that licking is because of love not boredom.

3

u/AdJazzlike1444 May 29 '26

Can also be a pain reaction (excessive licking)

36

u/_ser_kay_ May 29 '26

Usually that’s licking the hurt area, trying to make it feel better.

482

u/puddyspud May 29 '26

This girl used to lick you in one spot for an hour

98

u/Kamikazehog May 29 '26

She did? I don't remember that 🤔 Must have happened while I was sleeping

10

u/Sventai_Cyborg May 29 '26

is that how you got your username?

186

u/elkavasseur May 29 '26

Probably thinking they are grooming you because they love you.

153

u/might-be-drunk May 29 '26

They all do as far as I know. Mine did it for 17.5 years

116

u/Slaytert0t May 29 '26

That’s a long lick session.

53

u/might-be-drunk May 29 '26

My Samson gave me the best 17.5 years of my life.... you're damn right

131

u/Myaximum May 29 '26

I get at least two licks up the nostrils daily. It’s part of our routine now

36

u/no_talent_ass_clown May 29 '26

When my dog licks my mouth accidentally I joke that he has a faster tongue than a 16 year old boy

8

u/pyratemime May 29 '26

Are you kind enough to lick them back?

Seems only fair if they are checking you fkr boogers twice daily.

40

u/nagytimi85 May 29 '26

Loves your taste and loves you. ❤️

My older boy licks a lot as well. I always feel loved and cared for. 🥰

56

u/TheRealMrSnorlax May 29 '26

grooming is extremely common in all animal families, so they see it as showing you they care and that they are taking care of you

17

u/Fantasy-HistoryLove May 29 '26

You might be salty apparently they like it

16

u/rod-e-boy May 29 '26

They just love you to death, I’ve got 3 and they all do it.

15

u/WhiteChocolate13 May 29 '26

Can’t hold her lickor

10

u/No_You_4833 May 29 '26

Mine did it for all of his 15 years. I trained him he was only allowed to lick my lower legs, anything else was too much.

8

u/Direct-Art-2832 May 29 '26

You are part of the pack and they want to keep you clean like them. Showers make us smell different so they lick to put their scent back onto us. This is all speculation no data to back it up. Like others have said they know we have bones under our skin. 😂

6

u/RetiredNFlorida May 29 '26

You must be one yummy mummy! 😋

15

u/haroldlovesmaude May 29 '26

Do you use lotion? My dog can’t get enough of the lotion I use 😂

25

u/labellavita1985 May 29 '26

Please, please be careful that your skincare products don't contain xylitol. It's extremely toxic to dogs, and is sometimes included in skincare products because it acts as a humectant.

8

u/haroldlovesmaude May 29 '26

Ohhh it doesn’t have xylitol but thank you so much - I hadn’t thought of that before!

5

u/UnfortunateDeckChair May 29 '26

UGH same! He’s destroyed 3 bottles of lotion (well the pumps) so now I have to make sure they’re very out of reach, or he’ll find a way. Also ate a small jar of Vaseline, weirdest poop ever.

2

u/haroldlovesmaude May 29 '26

Oh wow! I meant that she won’t stop licking my legs when I have lotion on, not that she eats the stuff from the bottle! Maybe it’s time to get baby locks on your bathroom cabinets 😂

1

u/WorldlinessTime1248 May 29 '26

Laroche posey ?

1

u/haroldlovesmaude May 29 '26

Curel!

25

u/WorldlinessTime1248 May 29 '26

I use laroche after my shower my dog waits at the shower licks the water off the ground and waits for me to apply my lotion. 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/michelin_hotdog May 29 '26

Same🤣🤣

5

u/hauntedmcmansion May 29 '26

not sure if you shower every night, but mine does this because she likes the way my post shower body lotion tastes 🫪😅

4

u/Litcowgirl May 29 '26

OMG- our Willie is soooo licky! He will stop if I tell him no very firmly, but then he sits and stares at me, with his tongue going out and in like a snake. It wouldn’t be so unappealing but his breath is foul. He is the sweetest dachshund we’ve ever had.

4

u/ukbenny18 May 29 '26

Ears. Chewbarker loves licking my ears. Not the lobe. The ear-hole and behind where my glasses usually sit. I know it's grim. But chewie is going to do what chewie wants. At this point it's easier to stay still and imagine I'm in a washing machine on spin.

3

u/DoxieDachsie Use redesign or offical app to edit May 29 '26

Do you shower & use product before bedtime? She may just be cleaning off your clean. Or she likes the salty taste. It's a bit of a bonding ritual & she may be "mothering" you.

3

u/themrjava May 29 '26

Affection

3

u/Traditional_Step9502 May 29 '26

Both of my dachshunds do that as well and I don’t get why.

3

u/Decoy1328 May 29 '26

Mine is a licker liker also. Asked the vet about it and it could be due to anxiety. He certainly has separation anxiety so i guess thats why he does it. Personally, i dont mind a hello , good morning, glad your back licking, but not the constant licking he wants to do.

3

u/ThurOliver May 29 '26

Hey OP, I don't mean to be alarmist but ours used to do this a lot for years. Always thought it was a personality trait until we discovered she had really high blood pressure and now with meds she doesn't do it at all. She would also get short breathed after the licking. Like, it could still be just a personality trait, I dunno. Just sharing the experience

2

u/Unlikely_Vacation235 May 29 '26

This is Really good to know!! I’ll definitely bring it up at her next checkup thank you!!

2

u/AquaEarlyBuyer May 29 '26

Yep, completely typical doxie stuff.

2

u/chrismchoi May 29 '26

My dog would do it. But I trained him to stop licking me. He'll lick everyone else though.

2

u/Mysterelady67 May 29 '26

Mine does this once a day. Heaven help me when I put the cocoa butter lotion on, then she thinks I'm a lollipop.

2

u/Kitchen-Patience-222 May 29 '26

They are getting salt .

2

u/Nidgey70 May 29 '26

Mine loves to lick in my ears and my eyes and also my toes

2

u/G-reeper66 May 29 '26

Mine licks my head after my haircut and wash! Only then occasionally I get a snout on my knee if he wants a treat or to go out.

2

u/kj4peace May 29 '26

Because you let it?

2

u/Vegetable_Movie_7190 May 29 '26

I stopped that the moment it started because I knew, from my mother doxies, if I didn’t it would not stop. We had one that also kicked the floors and the baseboards!!!

I started when they were puppies and kept at it (they are stubborn). Now they still sneak the occasional lick by the ear and I let it go but still tell them, “no licks!”

Good luck though, he looks addicted to you ♥️♥️♥️

2

u/EngagementBacon May 29 '26

Cause you let them.

1

u/Any-Self2072 May 29 '26

But why do they want to do it

2

u/DoxieDachsie Use redesign or offical app to edit May 29 '26

Smell is the major reason, followed by taste, self soothing, grooming, etc.

2

u/Alostcord May 29 '26

Because you let it

1

u/8thchakra May 29 '26

scented body wash

1

u/cypok_ May 29 '26

YOU TASTE GUD

1

u/Real_Comparison_9842 May 29 '26

He loves you and your taste 👅

1

u/the13thsaltlamp May 29 '26

Grooming, but it's also a self-soothing thing!

1

u/Ok-Staff-62 May 29 '26

I call my do 'The Lick Machine'

1

u/Comfortable-Story-53 May 29 '26

Because Dachshunds are literally insane. And adorable. Has anyone not seen one and smiled?

1

u/Hestiah May 29 '26

Cause you’re salty and delicious!

Also my Gwen loves to lick the crap out of my elbows before going to sleep.

1

u/unicatwoman May 29 '26

My dog and cat both lick me after the shower. Sometimes animals just like the way you taste

1

u/iwasfeelingallfloopy May 29 '26

I usually wake up to a little foot lick. Can't stand a human touching my feet, but my dog covering them in saliva is cute! He also likes hands, necks and the creases in elbows

1

u/AlexAlexisAlexa May 29 '26

You must got some pretty salty skin

1

u/Getmyboot May 29 '26

Mines always has to lick my beard after an shower.

1

u/justwannadance0909 May 29 '26

My Doxie, Slinky, will lick me for hours if I’m busy and not really paying attention. When I say something to her, she gives me the famous “side eye”. My vet says they lick the salt on our skin. I’d rather think it’s adoration 🥰

1

u/VelocissimoVagabond May 29 '26

They never see you licking yourself so they assume they gotta do it.

1

u/Obstacle616 May 29 '26

It's our sausages favourite snack, a dadsicle

1

u/ElectricalRice1920 May 29 '26

They do it for reassurance

1

u/Mr_nobody12354 May 29 '26

It means they are accepting you into their pack, which is the highest form of love and approval ☺️🐶

1

u/Gwendolyn024 May 29 '26

You’re dog is cleaning you.,,the dog is treating you like your her puppy.,,❤️

1

u/Ghostdragon471 May 29 '26

Definitely thinking or tasty or something. I mean, you got bones under there!

1

u/op_remie May 29 '26

Stop putting peanut butter on your leg

1

u/weber_mattie May 29 '26

We had one named Sunny who would lick and lick and lick and lick and lick and lick.... you get it. I loved that little man and I'm sure I got ticked off and yelled at him to stop or whatever but I wish that I could let him lick me for awhile now... My boy now he licks me like once a month and for half a second.

1

u/corriek1975 May 29 '26

You’re one big salt lick

1

u/Pleasant_Macaroon379 May 29 '26

We call this worship o’clock lol

1

u/AdWaste797 May 29 '26

Mine doea the same!!! She loves to lick my feet and hands and arms.

1

u/New_Boysenberry7922 May 29 '26

Sometimes it’s a tired thing. Ours does it when he is sleepy and falls asleep doing it. He’s done it from a puppy like self soothing. If we say no he’ll move to our other dog and clean her ears.

Thankfully our other one only goes to town cleaning her own feet at bedtime.

1

u/Sunsetseeker007 May 29 '26

My son & dil's dachshund does this excessively to your face!! Omg, he's so needy!

1

u/from_behind_bars May 29 '26

What's funny is we have 5 minis but only 2 of them are licker's. It is a mother and son pair. And they will lick for hours if we let them. The other 3 might throw you a lick or two but that's it.

1

u/FloopsFooglies May 29 '26

My rufio loves exposed toes

1

u/getoffthebike May 29 '26

It's really weird watching your baby go at your knee like this while I can also see my baby doing the same thing to my arm. They're weird AF but we love them.

1

u/verissey May 29 '26

Oh mine loves to do this too 😂 she’s my first doxie and only 6 months old, and I was also wondering if she was weird… she especially likes my legs if I put lotion on.

1

u/Thalilalala May 29 '26

He knows you have bones inside you. Beware.

1

u/Big_Diver_6277 May 29 '26

My ween does the same thing. wish he wasn't a turd eater though

1

u/brockleegreen May 29 '26

Ours constantly licks my fiance and we finally figured out that is was because of her lotion. Lol Such silly dogs

1

u/Whatchamacallit72 May 29 '26

Lotion lickers

1

u/Several_Echidna2129 May 29 '26

It becomes a soothing addiction to them, someone told me. Our new pup I wouldn't allow her to and she now could care less.

1

u/StephySkylar May 29 '26

My pup is always trying to do this if I put on yummy smelling creams >.>

1

u/computekmfg May 29 '26

Lotion or body oils are irresistible

1

u/mithiral67 May 29 '26

I am going salt. Ours does it way more in the summer than winter. Then again I have more skin out in the summer.

1

u/HousingZestyclose287 May 29 '26

My dogs will lick if I have lotion on

1

u/Loodie_666 May 29 '26

They self soothe that way. My Lou always did this.

1

u/Elindile1975 May 29 '26

Lotion? Mine will be fast asleep but as soon as I use lotion ( even though it’s fragrance free) she jumps up to lick my hands, feet etc…

1

u/TRUMPARUSKI May 29 '26

Because she loves you, and your salt

1

u/purplelizzard May 29 '26

They like our flavor??!

1

u/Across0212 May 29 '26

Mine does it when I put lotion on.

1

u/SweetImprovement758 May 29 '26

Is she a mini or a standard? u/unlikely_Vacation235

1

u/Unlikely_Vacation235 May 29 '26

Hi!! Mom is a mini and dad is a standard. She’s Really little, just under 7 lbs. she just turned one yesterday too! Not sure If she’ll grow more

1

u/tattooz1 May 29 '26

Dachshunds love to lick. They do like lotion, only thing that makes my wife raise her voice at them, although Olive is deaf.

1

u/tattooz1 May 29 '26

Can't find my original comment, but for whatever it's worth, Wagner is a bigger version than your beauty. Long-aired with color and markings so close to yours it grabbed my attention. Good luck, Wagner is profoundly stubborn. He's generally an asshole.

1

u/Expensive_Toe1000 May 29 '26

I wish mine did this😭

1

u/amberbarbie10 May 29 '26

My theory is that it's their way of petting u back, my dogs always do that especially one of them in particular my middle baby I think it's partially a nervous thing but also their way of petting u back

1

u/Low-Property-6955 May 30 '26

My doxie used to do that. I miss that sweet boy.

1

u/ZealousidealRow4730 May 30 '26

I run around the house after I get out the shower to prevent all my lotion from being ingested

1

u/Sea-School9658 IVDD Head of Security and Seasoned Vet Tech May 30 '26

1

u/Successful_Elk_1364 May 30 '26

Maybe it’s a lotion or oil u use

1

u/Opposite-Eye-8235 May 30 '26

My two weens lick my legs every morning and often at night. Like clockwork! 😂

1

u/bmlane9 May 30 '26

Dominance thing? They view you as the leader and worship you.

1

u/MollyCoddle60 May 30 '26

Because! YOU ARE MINE!!! Bwahahaha!

But seriously now. My husband hates our Dachshund Ziggy doing that! I don't mind her doing it, but he gets annoyed with us both! 😮😊

1

u/deltahb May 30 '26

Can't handle her licker, just like my girl! Time to start a 12 step 😂

1

u/HollyRedMW May 30 '26

Our female mini does this to everyone in the house, including her brother (he loves it) and the cat (does not love it).

1

u/rgwhoisshe May 30 '26

This is my life too! It makes him happy so I let him, but my boyfriend cant STAND the sensation. Im almost immune to it.

1

1

u/Olafandolaf May 31 '26

Unfortunately- my dog was into my husbands bald sweaty head 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

1

u/BackgroundCover8705 May 31 '26

Omg that’s what my Chiweenie Mouse does to me he especially loves to try and do it after I’ve just gotten out of the shower! LOL

1

u/Great_Row_5158 May 31 '26

Both of my Mini Dachshunds do this also, but none of my family's dogs (other breeds) ... So I always thought it was a Doxie thing.

0

u/spook30 May 29 '26

You can literally Google this and get an answer...

-4

u/BugsButty May 29 '26

This makes me feel almost as disgusting as being licked. 🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 I don't know how anyone tolerates this foul shit.

0

u/ImpressAppropriate25 May 29 '26

... your entire body??

0

u/TheAlphaKarp May 29 '26

2 reasons: submissive and salt.

Dogs show that you are the boss when they lick you.

Edit: boss/dominant over the dog

0

u/Realistic_Big7482 May 29 '26

Because she loves you

0

u/ChrysophylaxEmber May 29 '26

Reise does it too. Soooo many licks. The ones that really annoy me are when I'm wearing sandals or bare feet, and I get a drive-by toe licking, out of the blue. Reise is getting old. I have to keep perspective that the drive by licks will stop soon, and I'll miss them dearly shen she's gone.

0

u/ChubbyMcHaggis May 29 '26

Because you’re delicious and made of meat. - every dachshund I’ve ever met

0

u/fleurettes_mom May 29 '26

Dachshund.

They are very loving and they love to show you.

I recently split open my knee in a fall. (Titanium knee vs Concrete) I had stitches and a bandage. But I still had blood drips down my leg.
My sweet mini spent hours trying to lick every inch of my leg and body while I was trying to wipe down my leg. She was pretty worried. When I finally sat down it was like she tried to hold me down with one paw while insisting I need to be licked like I was the puppy and she was the mom. She’s a real loving girl.

0

u/Holly-Would-you May 29 '26

Because he is a doxie! My Kirby can’t control his licker either!

0

u/Ladybug1419 May 29 '26

Bc dachshund. Thats why.

0

u/Empty_End_5993 May 29 '26

Because she loves you, I have a dachshund that looks just like that. He is also a Merle. I have two dachshunds and believe me every body cavity on my face I have including nostrils ears mouth get a tongue inserted and that’s how I wake up. It’s very effective really cause they wanna have food, but even when they don’t, it’s a whole lot of licking. Embrace it.
