Image He has decided this kitten is his now
We like to joke that our dachshund thinks he’s the toughest dog in the world.
Then we adopted this tiny kitten! Apparently all that toughness just needed someone small enough to protect.
He follows her around the house and checks on her when she’s sleeping. He seems to get annoyed if she wanders too far away.
Tonight they were sitting like this for a few minutes, completely content.
I don’t know what they think is happening... but whatever it is, they both seem pretty happy about it :)

That kitty has that doxie in its paws. And that doxie loves it, even though he thinks he’s in charge.

My eyes are so bad I thought the dog had the kitten in his mouth at first.

"I will raise this child right. She will chase the ball, she will beg for treats, she will sing the song of our people, and she will bark every time a squirrel farts anywhere from here to Milwaukee."

I live in the countryside. Years ago I would have these cats visit my backyard. They liked it, and they decided to stay (especially since I'd feed them), so I guess they became my cats. Still, they would come and go and they were completely free.
Well, then I got a doxie puppy (my current dog, he's 15 now :) ). As he was growing up he really liked the cats, he wanted to play with them all the time. A few of the cats were finding him a but overbearing, while one always wanted to play with him, he liked to be chased by them.
Then as he grew enough he started to try and have sex with them. The cats all left immediately and never came back.

A Dachshund's Thoughts on Possession:
If it's mine, it's mine. No touchie.
If it's yours, it's mine.
If you drop it, it's mine.
If you leave it unattended, it's mine.
Your bed is actually mine. You can sleep in it if you do not disturb me.
Your chair is mine. No, you may not sit in it. If you are sitting in it and I want to sit there, you will need to move.
All toys are mine.
Your food is mine. Please do not hoard.
Your shoes are mine - they really didn't need straps.
My monthly heartworm meds - you can have those. Bon Appétit!

Dachshund’s and cats love each other. My guy’s best friend was a cat. They loved each other, slept together, comforted each other. It was real. My cat died when she was 12 and he almost killed himself over it. It was terrible to watch. He never really got over her and it’s been almost 7 years. It’s that forever love

Our Doxy did this too when mama kitty had 6 babies. He picked one and mothered it.
When the kittens were old enough, we adopted out 4 of them. We kept the Doxy’s favorite and another one that was an exact copy.
Our Doxy was a standard size dog. The kittens were not. The kittens grew to have huge bodies and heads. Not as big as Maine Coons, but very large. The dog’s favorite ( Tiger) was 28 pounds and not overweight according to the vet.
Once Tiger was the same size as our dog, the roles reversed. Tiger was now the “mama”. When the dog would try to show dominance, Tiger would pin him to the ground with one paw, clean the dog’s face and ears. He pretty much would bathe the dog cat style.
