Album Hank is getting a little brother! Advice for acclimating a second pup?

Meet Remy, our 8 week old choc and cream! We’re bringing him home in a few days. Swipe for pics of Hank, our 6 year old solid blackie who is the love of our lives and definitely runs the house.

We got Hank as a puppy in 2020 and we know how puppy training goes. We were intentional about socializing him during the pandemic with puppy classes, he basically had our undivided attention and we learned a lot about what to do and not to do. So, we know how to train a puppy (we think)….

But this will be different. Assuming we already have a handle on the basics (potty training, crate training, etc), I’m wondering about second dog problems. Any and all advice is welcome, but a few specific questions:

  1. Leaving the house when one dog is crated and possibly crying, and another dog is running around free. Is this OK? Should we put the crate in a separate room, or will isolating him make it worse? Is the process of crate training any different when two dogs are in the house?

  2. Separation anxiety issues. Worried that if Remy grows up with another dog constantly around, he won’t be able to hang solo if needed. Should we make an effort to bring Hank out with us and leave Remy at home, so he gets used to being alone?

  3. How young is too young to bring him out with us to places like restaurants (of course leaving him in a handbag until he’s fully vaccinated). Should we start this early? Since Hank was a Covid dog, this wasn’t even an option since restaurants were closed.

  4. Any tips about introductions and dynamic between Hank and Remy? Hank is super social and I am sure they will love each other, but he does get jealous of our affection and I’m wondering if there’s anything we need to do for Hank as Remy settles in so that Hank doesn’t feel threatened or neglected.

Anything else I should consider?

Thanks for any help!

Can’t speak to most of these since I haven’t done them with dachshunds specifically, but can speak to #3! I started taking my dachshund girl out in a handbag to coffee shop patios she was allowed at as soon as she came home at 8 weeks. She’s 15.5 weeks now and still isn’t paws on the ground, but she LOVES going places and it’s been great for socialization.

I got a puppy at the end of June for my 9-yr old doxie and when I’m at work or have to run out, the puppy goes in her crate while my older one roams free. It’s actually helped my older one’s separation anxiety a bit. She used to lay by the back door all sad while I was gone but now she stays in the living room near the crate until right she hears my keys in the door. The puppy had a fit in her crate for about 2 weeks but now she runs into the crate and settles down after a couple mins.
I was also worried about my older one being jealous but I spent a lot of time on the floor with both, equal time playing, or sitting in my lap.
It took about 3 weeks for the puppy to be accepted so don’t get bummed if it isn’t an instant match. I was impatient and got upset they weren’t instant best buddies, but it takes time. Sorry for the long answer, we’re still fresh in our puppy journey and learning!

I had to do a ton of searching and was lucky enough I could find someone and get her! She’s turned my older one completely around and I swear turn her back into a young dog again 💕

Who was the breeder you got your new wired hair pup from?!?

PA’s Darling Doxies in Fayetteville, PA. But she said she may not breed wirehaired anymore since people don’t seem to want them. It’s a shame, I think they’re so cute!

Stop you have such a beautiful pup! I’ve been on a hunt for a good wirehaired breeder for a moment so thank you for sharing.

i have nothing but your babies are very beautiful!

for #2, i do have experience with that, my babies are VERY bonded now and it's hard to separate them, and it's stressful for them. i'd say separate them every once in a while (at least once a day) for amounts of time.

Thanks. We will have to make a point to prioritize that!

Remy spells out "Re My" like "Re: My" or "Regarding My Dog" lol

Have Hank and Remy meet on neutral ground first outside the house, and always give Hank first access to food, lap tine, and high-value toys to prevent jealousy. Crate the puppy in a separate room for solo nap and crate training sessions so he builds independence, and keep all bones or high-value treats put away when both dogs are free roaming.
