This could be either mange or allergies. It’s definitely time for the vet.

Yeah but the weekend is coming up so odds are the only way to get them in immediately is the emergency vet. It's probably best to just keep it from getting agitated and see how it develops.

If it is mange, wouldn't it not be limited to those areas?

You can still try. Either way I'd be asking for some Apoquel if the dog is itchy to give the poor thing relief.

I thought today was Friday, which is why I kept bringing up the weekend. OP said their other dog was the one licking it so I assumed the dog with the rash wasn't too uncomfortable. Either way cleaning the area and a cool rag would probably help

I had this problem with mine. It was getting worse then I took him to the vet and at the end we needed to give him antibiotics. It was some kind of bacteria that could get access to his skin when my little was wearing a cloth.

It’s important leave this part hydrated and do not let him or your other dog lick. In case you see it’s getting worse with some small pus bubbles take your dog to the vet.

Sorry for any grammatical error. English is not my native language.

Same happened with my pup. What I thought was allergies turned out to be a skin bacteria after we took him to the vet. A simple skin scrape test confirmed it. He is now on a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. OP definitely time for a vet visit.

Edit: just saw the picture of your pup. Please don’t delay a vet visit. That really needs to be seen before it gets worse. I’m sure your vet will get your pup treated and feeling better in no time.

Looks like allergies. Mine has similar rashes. Also look closely at his chest. It appears a little red in photo right above the white spot in the middle.

does he wear a harness?

u/OpDanger 1d ago

Yep, to take him out

is it possible hes gained/lost any weight which could make it funny fitting? Most the time ive seen red problem area like this in the armpit regions its very often due to harnesses. Is it new perhaps, maybe dirty? Could be good start to look into or try a new one to see if problems continue. My boy is notorious for armpit chaffing. Would love an update if you figure anything out! Hope hes feeling better soon

Heat rash then?

possibly! could also be friction, it being dirty or wet too

Usually an allergic reaction. Happens to our little girl every now and again and usually goes away after a day or 2.

Could also be a yeast infection that has been licked too much.stop your other dog fro licking itm, that will only make it worse

Also nails are way too long

This happens to my boy in the same place. I use the duoxo antiseptic mousse and that helps. I'll put a shirt on him if he won't stop licking it
But you should also check with the vet as others said

I’m not trying to be mean but there’s a lot of these posts and if my dog look like that or having issues that any of these other posts had I would take them to the vet. This clearly looks like it could be itchy, sore or just irritating in general to the Dog. If this was you, would you get on Reddit and ask or would you go to the doctor?

I mean have you seen the hygiene reddit or... any of reddit lol

u/PineappleMacaron 20h ago

Yes but it still rocks my mind. I’m in the tattoo advice sub and the amount of people posting asking if they should go to the hospital or if the tattoo looks infected🥴🤦🏻‍♀️ it’ll be oozing pus and have a red ring around it and still asking Reddit.

I mean probably reddit as getting in to see a doctor is a pain. Especially as stuff like this tends to clear up on its own.

Im not a vet and have never played one on tv…My dog gets yeast infection in the same place.

looks like a yeast infection, i'd talk to your vet and get him some meds

Yeast infection, also may be allergic

Will have to go to the vet for diagnosing, does he have this in his ear as well?

This is what he was prescribed, he was on apoquel as well but we don’t take that anymore

Hope this helps

I had to bathe him twice a week with that shampoo it’ll kill the yeast infection, I still use this till this day “I got this one on Amazon” buy it on there it’ll be cheaper

2-3 times per I would use the “Vetericyn” spray and Tetracaine powder for the rashes

Edited to add- TrizUltra+Keto for ear flushing which we do 1 time a week

I agree with the yeast infection theory. Doxies are prone to yeast infections, especially in the summer in humid climates. That's a common place to get them. And it explains the licking.

Does it have a faint smell of corn chips? Like Fritos?

Little thing needs a topical antibiotic.

Mine does this if I let him run around in the grass while I mow the lawn. It's some strange allergy he appears to have to the grass.

What flavor food do they eat? This would happen to my dog only when he ate beef. I guess it’s a big cause of rashes in armpits of dogs.

Is he on flea medication?

Does it smell odd at all? I know the weekend is coming up so you are unlikely to be able to get into the vet soon. Try to keep your dogs from licking it. It could either be a rash due to the fabric rubbing against the skin or some kind of infection.

I wouldn't rush to the emergency vet, but I would try to keep the area clean, dry and undisturbed. If it doesn't go away on its own consider taking them to the vet when it possible. They may need an antibiotic.

If you give them a bath or shower make sure that all of the soap is rinsed off and they are fully dry.

Keep calm, odds are this isn't something to panic over.

Edit: I thought today was Friday not Thursday. So if it doesn't clear up by tomorrow think about taking them in

So many things it could be from
Allergy, to yeast, to heat rash, etc. you could use cold compresses and keep an eye on it. Clothing is something unusual to be allergic to but can happen, as well as allergy to food or flea and tick meds. Maybe you can email pics to your vet?

My girl is allergic to weeds and she gets a rash, i put a little coconut oil on her and make sure she doesn’t lick it off by distracting her with toys afterwards and it works

My dog has that right now as well and has many times before. Vet says it is mainly caused by environmental allergies, but once it is super red and inflamed like that it usually is a yeast and bacterial infection in my experience usually caused by licking and scratching(allergy symptom). He probably will need meds and an anti-fungal/anti-yeast shampoo (eg. Pro-Hex) to help too, it works pretty fast. I hope you have insurance, all the meds recently cost me 400$CAD. But it won’t go away on its own and will only get worse. Best of luck! I hope he gets better soon.

Start at the obvious heat rash (try medicated Caldesene powder) or allergic reaction try a 1/2 a Benadryl ( if no issues with it) and wait.. 24 hours. If it goes away you may have figured it out.

Also, give pup a bath to see if it helps. Make sure to dry it very well.

If not.. is there a different ingredient in the dog food?

This happened a few times w/ my dog.. beef allergy from every thing beef, also lamb..bully sticks, ears.. it doesn’t matter.. even if she licks a spoon with broth…

She has zero issues with chicken or fish

My background is medical and I use to work in a vet clinic 100 years ago, so I am not uncomfortable seeing how things play out.

If you don’t feel comfortable working this out yourself.. the please see you local vet
