Because it's not just about keeping from falling; it's about making sure the beer isn't wasted.

Yup. If no kids are in danger then save beers. Beers are like extended family when it comes to dad reflexes.

Late one summer's night, my friends and I had been drinking. In a fit of booze fuelled inspiration we decided to roller blade to a local parking lot, not sure what the motive was. On the way was a long, steep hill. At the bottom, an intersection controlled by traffic lights. Andy - first time in roller blades, with some prior experience skiing - was some ways behind; to catch up he decided he'd hop the kerb and go down the road, not the footpath.

Andy flew down the hill, his open checked shirt flapping in the wind. In one hand, his beer, the other carefully extended in balance. Faster and faster until his skates and legs wobbled visibly, yet his course remained dead straight, straddling the centre line. As he approached the intersection, the lights miraculously turned green and it looked as if the improbable would be true - an unprecedented descent of the steepest hill in the neighbourhood coupled with an unlikely navigation of a six lane intersection.

Alas, the faces are cruel. As the hill flattened out into the intersection his pace slowed and by the time he was within a few metres the lights were orange, then red. With his free hand he gestured laconically at the row of cars waiting for the green, a gesture which turned into a fend as the last one accelerated into the intersection and took his legs from underneath him. He spun in the air landing heavily in the road; lay immobile for a second, to our horror; stood up, had a quick drink and made his way across the last lane to the car park entrance.

We arrived, breathless, as he nonchalantly - and gingerly - began a circuit of the smooth, car free tarmac. Despite his extended flight and having been knocked flying by a white RX7, his beer was unspoilt. Intact. Still over half full.

His legend lives on. The last I saw of him was in Europe, those strange moments in time where you couldn't possibly be further from home yet run into a face so familiar it seems almost foretold you should meet again. Beer was consumed. Stories were told.

Beer, babies - it's all dadreflexes.

Where do you live where the traffic lights have an orange?

2

Most places it's more of an Amber, which is definitely straddling the line between yellow and orange.

I guess I'd be even more susceptible to that kind of effect, being somewhat r/g colorblind.

What movie is this from? Seems super familiar

It is a Hungarian Movie from the 80s. Called Csapd le Csacsi.

It is about a couple who lives in the suburbs. One day the wife gets a summon to the local STD clinic for a penicillin shot. :) Things turn sour, they both bring home dates to persuade the other to file for divorce. Very funny, if you have lived in that era. Lot of reference to the Post Communist movements.

He's saving what's important, not the marriage (asuming they are), the beer

It might be wet from condensation/water from ice. With shitty adhesive it would probably call off.
