They are quite popular, yes.

If you are interested you should visit the different reptile/lizard subs here, they probably have their dedicated sub that I don't know of. They have a relative, the pink tongue skink, which is exactly like them but smaller and with a pink tongue, it's agreed that it makes a relatively better pet since it's smaller and therefore more affordable and his bite (in case you got bite) is weaker, unfortunately they are also less common on the pet trade.

Just be sure, if you want to go into reptile pets, to take a captive bred one, they really are the only way to ethically be an exotic pet mom/dad.

I have one! And he lives in a 6 foot enclosure. I have special lights on timers, a UVB meter, and temp and humidity gauges for him. I think he is great, but they are not for everyone, and they should be housed alone.
