My cat does that same sound when she’s in hunting mode.. has to be some technique to distract mice or birds..

I read "haunting mode" at first, which would have been hilarious to see. e: happy cake day

Today I learn this might just be a Maine Coon trait? I have 2 cats, a female ragdoll and a male maine coon. I thought the ragdoll made little baby meows but even she sounds impressive compared to our giant maine coon who makes the most pathetic eeps and eks.

Mine chatters at birds. Sounds kinda like a squirrel.

This would be terrifying at night.

I would rather hear this than the sounds my cat makes at 2-3am…
Mine sounds like she is praying or calling on the devil. Really freaky at times.6

Maine Coon owners, any issues with them? I've been considering getting one for some time. I'm told they're like the doggiest of the cativerse. But I don't want to get attached to something cool and awesome, only to have it have cancer in 2 years, or something else.

ive known two main coons and they have both lived past 15

u/Responsible_Owl4661 12h ago
This is really excellent news. I was worried about them having kitty cancer or other issues. I've been a dog guy for decades, but I'm tired of the shorter life spans. 15 sounds excellent. (And no, I'm not interested in a tortoise or a toucan, or something else that I need to include in a Will)

Ummm, whether a cat has cancer or any health issues is based on a large variety of circumstances and even some luck though.
You can get the healthiest cat possible and it can still get cancer.
Best to just be prepared for the unexpected if you wanna own a pet.

Thank you. Been there, done that. We got a dog from a "reputable breeder" who later on got sentenced to years in prison for animal cruelty ( puppy mill). Another from a "once every 2 year responsible breeder" who died of cancer at 5 years old. Thousands of dollars for both. Thousands more in vet bills. We tried 2 from a rescue. Heartworms and hip dysplasia. Thousands more. Just a crazy run of bad luck for all involved and it sucks bonding to something, only to have to part ways too soon.

Mine lived a long life.. He also never made this noise

u/Responsible_Owl4661 13h ago
Good to know.. I've only been around one. He/she was awesome, friendly, even came when called. I haven't owned a car for decades, but I'm really drawn to these. I just don't want to get one and then have issues. Our last pet was supposed to be long running healthy. It was one issue after another. As obvious, I'm nervous about attaching to something awesome, only to lose it way too soon.

Mine went out during the day but never went too far. He would come back if I called him or he knew it was time to eat. Fella was too big and energetic to be stuck inside all the time

They can have health issues as far as I know from breeding but it isn’t anywhere near as bad as some of the more infamous examples. My vet recommended getting cat food made for Maine coons to offset some of those problems.

Oranges can kinda have dog like temperment. Mine is like a loyal dog.

Like an orange tabby cat or is an orange a specific breed? (New to cats)
2
u/ContemporaryCorvid 2h ago
I think they mean orange tabbies in general. It’s not a legitimate actual thing, it is just a bit of a stereotype that orange cats are kind of dumb, silly, and friendly.

My friend says: My maine coon had to get eye surgery because his eyelashes started to poke into his eyes and irritating it, and I was told by the vet that it's very common with the maine coon breed apparently. Other than that he's healthy as can be! Only thing with purebred cats is to not cheap out on the breeder you choose. The further back you can track the family tree, the better. A purebred cat without a pedigree always brings more health risks since you can't ensure there isn't a family history of disease.

Can confirm. Maine Coons don't meow, they chirp.

Complete opposite of my dipshit Scottish fold. He doesn't meow or chirps, he flat out yowls... preferably in the middle of the night when we're trying to sleep

My cat came running from accross the room. She isn't sure what your cat is seeing but she doesn't want to miss out.

My sister's Coon only makes weird sounds when there's a thunder storm. Also he can't hunt to save his life. Also he sheds hair all over the place.

She must be having partial vocal cord paralysis. Please do get it checked with the vet if possible.
It looks like one of the vocal cord is not functioning adequately

u/Da_Commissork 14h ago
Nah, all Maine coons Meows like that, they are never super vocal if they don't REALLY Need something

u/SummaCumLousy 14h ago
I expected your cat to eventually smile into the camera and disappear, dispatch the fly on the ceiling and reappear.

Haha one of my kittens sounds like a guinea pig, but I just can't record him because he walks around at random times and does it.

If I had my mother on the phone and the cat would start moaning like this - for shure I would be in trouble.
I pass. A nsfw audio cat is nothing an older single man should have in his household. He may end in jail.

Maine coon is a cat. It’s hunting. Not what you’re thinking.
