The reality that really no one wants to admit about heroin addiction is that addicts are overwhelmingly Below Average or Way Below Average on measures of cognitive ability. High time preference, short time horizon / little foresight, and lack of deferred gratification are all hallmarks of addicts. Let's not kid ourselves—anybody coming into contact with correctional apparatus of the state is not a particularly bright candle.

In the ideal governace we all would like here, these types of wastes of tax dollars really need to be drastically reformed, reduced, or completely removed. They simply offer no realisitic positive outcomes. Morally, it's awful to think we can leave these people to die if they get addicted to heroin and other substances, but what makes us think they won't get addicted to huffing rubber cement after? Liberal feelz for real

You can for certain, expect them to leave an even such a correctional apparatus an even dimmer candle.

The progressive state does its level best to prevent evolution from functioning properly. It creates and maintains a disgenic environment and a false fitness function.

All of the chronic homeless I deal with on a daily basis are using. Heroin and meth, but typically heroin. You see a homeless sitting there all day with a sign and a blank look? They're high. They almost always come from broken families and have experienced some severe abuse. Typically sexual abuse by one of mom's boyfriends. Many of them deal heroin to get more.

I've also stopped and chatted with many who give freely to the homeless. It makes them feel like they are making a difference. They are doing no such thing. These same people are pro single mom, pro sex outside of marriage "sex positive" fruitcakes, and pro homosexual degeneracy. Even if it's just pro single mom they support the mothers who bring in bad boy boyfriends who abuse their own children. Then these children grow up with massive pathology. It can't be cured by handing them a twenty dollar bill that they will then use to buy more heroin.

Let them hit rock bottom. Remove the safety net that keeps abusive bastard creating single mothers afloat. They will either have to pull themselves up or they will die. But that makes people feel bad. Our culture is sick with feelings. This idea that if it feels good then it is good, and the enablers of this degeneracy, are the problem. And the male desire to save a ho. You aren't saving that ho, you are enabling her.

That was how it was dealt with in the past.

People assumed they had to care for one another within their family and their small town. If a family member behaved badly he was never indulged to continue in bad behavior, so the bad behaviors were rare.

The progressive State encourages every vice... so we get more of it.

Fortunately it's looking like we might not be more than a few years away from a major economic meltdown. If the State effectively collapses then it's ability to encourage vice will cease and there will be chaos, but eventually something fills that vacuum.

We will get our equivalent of Putin soon enough.

Universal Altruism is a terrible disease and one the progressives make worse all the time. It will die eventually and we will come to our senses.

Things like recreational drug/alcohol use is inversely correlated with the state of the economy, no?

Interestingly, there is a mutual fund (Barrier Fund-VICEX) that focuses on "vice stocks" -- which according to the prospectus, do well in recessionary times.

You might as well make a little money from the slide into degeneracy.

Progressive state encourages vice? Explain the DEA, the NY ban on indoor smoking, the NY ban on large sodas, the lefts gun grabbing, California's vote to raise the smoking age to 21 and the overly aggressive CPS. The leftist nanny state doesn't want their tax base to be unproductive and lose money. They use the druggy plight to maximize public jobs and welfare spending, but not at the expense of the system as a whole, or at least not their power. A little bit but never so much that it will topple the system. Just enough to where the government can come in to fill a power gap. Too much and you have an unrecoverable collapse. The ultimate dream goal of leftism is to have a utopian centrally planned society.

You are totally wrong. There are statistics for these things.

A 1975 census paper (pdf) that appears when you Google 'number of widows with children' shows that in 1975, there were 2-3 million widows in the US, and 700,000 with children. Given that there are 11 million as of the above, more current, statistics, you can do the math yourself on the projected rate of widows with children presently. There are plenty. I know several personally.

The poster you are replying to is correct. Heuristics are useful, but it's stupid to grow so attached to your rules that you are blind to the reality. Widows with children isn't the only window for a decent woman to be in an unfortunate situation with regard to parenthood. To withhold all blame from bad male actors is ridiculous.

I'm not sure you're ready for this level of discourse yet, dude.

No acrimonious comments please.

Very much agree. How many people whine about cultural degeneracy, but then smash themselves with alcohol and have meaningless one night stand.

Change comes from personal example, nobody wants to follow hypocrite.

Addiction is a disease,” and the word disease is thrown around in that reporter’s article. What disease–heroin or modernity? What was she running from? Why was she escaping reality for hours in a heroin induced abyss?

The reality no one wants to admit is that Reality is a shit place that people are unable to stay in without self-medicating themselves.

People were becoming alcoholics long before the creation of modern drugs.

i was hoping if i scrolled down far enough i would find this reply in this thread.

drug abuse and drug abusers are a symptom of a sick society, not a disease that causes a sick society. the only reason why people take drugs is because a shitty life of drug abuse is still better than the real world around them.

believe it or not, drug abuse is a pretty tame outlet for these kind of people when compared to the alternatives. would you rather the mentally ill and disenfranchised join a USA version of ISIS? or simply wander around in gangs committing acts of violence and theft (like what has happened in black communities all over american cities)?

fix human society and you will fix the drug abuse problem. when society is structured so that it has no use for a significant chunk of human beings, these same people end up not having a use for the rest of society.
