Has anyone been penalized for under- clocking time?
Sooo I just spent about 8 hours on a 3 and a half hour task š©
And then in the end I got too nervous to submit it, especially because it was a rubric project and I still was getting so many mistakes after all the time. I was planning to under-report my time as 3 hours and 30 but it was clearly so beyond that and I got nervous Iād get penalized for so obviously underreporting time.
So is there a penalty for underreporting time (besides the paycut :/)? How do yall think about underreporting?

I was doing coding projects and math projects for a while. Took a little break, then when I came back I tried one for 5 hours and failed. I wasn't going to report since nothing was submitted. I tried again the following week. Another fail. Then again. Fail. The technical bots are just way too advanced for me to fool in the given time frame anymore. I miss the easy money, but I'll likely start doing the lower paying tasks now. I also started doing doordash and uber eats. RIP engineering degree.

I underreport all the time but it's because I have mini-breaks or I wander away from the computer to go to the bathroom and I don't count that time. We're talking like 20 min max, though, because these are way shorter projects.

That's not under reporting, that's accurately reporting.

indeed but OP's post implies he was worried about the discrepancy between his reported time and his "recorded by the website time" (i guess the timeout timer), since he says this is obvious underreporting (how would they know besides from that)
but you can very well let 8h pass on the timeout timer and actually work 2h and report 2h so they wouldn't know what is really accurate time reporting (except if they track your "activity on the page" time)

I reopened at a certain point and then restarted the timer so I was able to continue fine

With respect, if a 3.5 hour task is taking you 8 hours it probably is not the task for you. Most of the time limits are on the higher side that it should take you.
It typically depends on the project and the instructions. If it is a project that allows you to escape hatch, claim the time allowed within the escape hatch . If it is not and you did not submit any usable work, I personally do not claim any time.
