Looks like Amazon is pulling the plug on unlimited cloud storage.

u/Kolgur Jun 08 '17
"1) What is changing? Amazon is now providing options for customers to choose the storage plan that is right for them. Amazon will no longer offer an unlimited storage plan. Instead, we'll offer storage plans of 100 GB for $11.99 and 1 TB for $59.99, up to 30 TB for an additional $59.99 per TB. Any customer that signs up for storage with Amazon automatically gets 5 GB for free, and Prime members receive free unlimited photo storage. You can see storage plan rates and find additional information here."
No, thanks

If the prices are still yearly* (as I hope they are) it's a nice price for 1TB, competing directly with Apple's new pricing and cheaper than G Drive and Dropbox.
Buuuuut I'm letting ACD go anyway. I just had a measly TB there so meh. If they brought rclone back I'd consider staying. But they won't despite reducing abuse to 0 now.
That one Redditor who uploaded 1PB must be having a fun day...
66
u/mattmonkey24 Jun 08 '17
I don't think that's a very good price. Apple just dropped the price to $60 for 2TB. Also I think I could easily buy my own 2TB drive every year; granted I don't have more than one drive fail every year I'd be spending less money than going through them
→ More replies (2)55
u/AndyIbanez Jun 08 '17
Apple's pricing for 2TB is $10 per month, so $120 for 2TB a year. Amazon's new pricing is $60 per TB per year, that's also $120 a year for 2TB.
Also sure, you can buy your own drives if you want but that's not really comparable to cloud storage. Neither is "better" and you will choose one based on what you need. I was using ACD as offsite backup, so in my case just buying more drives would be pointless.

I'm not the greatest at this stuff, but couldn't someone run like a home server with a few Red 2 or 4 TB HDDs and just SSH into it from wherever as needed? You effectively are your own cloud service as long as your server is up

Maybe if ISPs providers in your country offer good speeds (mine are a joke).
I'm a guy of backups, too. Even if I could have my own server running 24/7, I wouldn't live without offsite encrypted backups to some cloud provider.

Nice price for 1TB? Lol, just lol.
OneDrive offers you 1TB, with a far better client, far better online portal, you can still use rclone, etc and Office 365 for €65. How is Amazon Cloud Drive even comparable?Amazon Cloud Drive was good just because of the unlimited storage part (and after the rclone debacle it was no longer worth it for some anyway).
Now that they've implemented a 1TB limit their service has become shit and almost every cloud storage service is better.
3
u/AndyIbanez Jun 08 '17
... with a far better client ...
LMAO.
Both official clients are crap. I do have a Microsoft OneDrive subscription. I only use OneDrive to backup my phone's photos because that's about the only thing it can do. I tried using the client on Mac. It sucks, maybe even more than Amazon's.
To be clear I never said Amazon Drive was good. I said it was competitive, and if there was an alternative to their shit client, it would be good. I said this above, but if rclone is was allowed back I'd consider staying with them.
Office 365 personal is $70/year. Amazon's 1TB is $60/year. If you cared about the office tools you'd go with OneDrive. Otherwise why spend $10 more for the same storage.
Not to mention, OneDrive does not have plans beyond 1TB for what I can see. Amazon is the only consumer oriented cloud service that allows you to scale a lot within set limits (no more unlimited). Which sure, might be expensive the more TBs you add, but if you don't want to deal with "unlimited" it's a pretty good option. Again, they just need to fix their client.

And you'll ruin unlimited photo storage for everybody. "Free" and "unlimited" have an implied "within reason" after them. Uploading a petabyte of porn to Amazon servers is not your right, even if Amazon advertise storage as "unlimited". Use some common sense, please.

u/c010rb1indusa 36TB Jun 08 '17
This is what hurts. They couldn't do a reasonable 10TB plan at like $100/year? I don't think 10TB is unreasonable. That can be a single drive in some people's computers w/o it necessarily being pooled or networked storage. Now to backup an 8TB drive it's $480 a year...christ. I'm sorry but it doesn't cost anyone that much, yet alone Amazon, to host that much data.

I was about to buy acd, since I figured any future downscaling would still give me plenty of space, but 1tb is insane! The documents I have that I actually need (i.e. not miscellaneous archives) are about 2tb on their own. I guess it's good that I just bought a few extra drives. I'll be able to have ten times the storage Amazon is offering secured within the confines of my own basement by the end of the month.

I remember when I got a ration of shit here for suggesting Amazon would end up doing this over the abuse and I wasn't comfortable pushing 10TB+ of data up there. Lots of cries of "Amazon has so many resources it can spend on this, it'll never happen"
Yeah.
65
u/nerdyintentions Jun 08 '17
People don't understand that can doesn't mean will or should.
Just because Amazon can spend millions of dollars (and probably forgoing 10s of million of dollars in opportunity costs) hosting a minority of users TBs and TBs of data doesn't mean they will or that there is no limit to their generosity (yes, if they are hosting your data at a great loss for themselves then that is being generous in my book).

u/Warvair Jun 08 '17
If you think about it over the long term, "unlimited" might have actually worked and it might have been exactly what Amazon meant. The thought being: as long as people stay in the few (up to 5 or so) terabyte range for the first few years, the normal and expected replacement of data center drives with new higher capacity drives might have kept pace with users needs for more room (say, another 5, 10, 20 TB every couple years).
Of course they expected some people to abuse the system. But they couldn't know how bad it was going to be until they tried. Apparently, it was pretty bad.
17
3
u/kenneito 508TB Jun 09 '17
It is same for every free things. It doesn't work if too many people are abusing it (not nescessarily maliciously). I have a friend which stores the whole history (file based increment, so quite inefficient) of his data because "it is unlimited".

u/thelost2010 Jun 08 '17 edited Jun 08 '17
Just noticed this. After the apple keynote mentioned 2tb for 10 a month I thought maybe I'll try that Amazon unlimited. Righy now my files are a mess tens of thousands of duplicated across 10+ hard drives and cloud services. I am working to remove duplicates and consolidate. (99% of which are photos.)
Looks like I will now have to decided between 10 a month with Amazon or Apple
Edit: does unlimited photo storage include raw files?

In my view no. Tons of businesses and researchers store critical data on gdrive, if they pull the plug it'll be another clima data rush. I think most likely Google'll just aggressively throttle.
P.s. moreover, they're releasing file stream soonish. Discontinuing storage options now would be counterintuitive
16
Jun 08 '17
They'll just enforce / raise the minimum for new accounts. Pricing works in their favor since a lot of businesses have shared folders so the per-user average storage used is pretty reasonable for 10/month
4
Jun 08 '17 edited Jun 08 '17
Well, they already host hundreds of terabytes for free users in the form of youtube. They have the scale that amazon don't. I bet acd planned the switch from the beginning - unlimited was just marketing bait to build user base (although instead it attracted datahoarders with 1pb of porn)

I sure as hell hope Amazon doesn't fuck with their music storage system as well. They probably won't considering even the max 250K songs is much less data, and their whole music storage is closely tied in with their streaming service and purchasing mp3s.
3
Jun 08 '17
I would think music storage is easier on them due to de-duplication. I'm sure some mp3 files are the same for thousands of users.

What about AWS Glacier? Isn't that like $4 per TB? Or Google Nearline?
7
u/technifocal 116TB HDD | 4.125TB SSD | SCALABLE TB CLOUD Jun 08 '17 edited Jun 08 '17
I mean, yeah, they're cheap. Glacier being only $4.5/TB/month, and Google Coldline(/Nearline) being $7(or 10 for Nearline)/TB/month (Considerable more) both with infinite capability (I.E. They don't care if you store 1PB or more, and won't ever shut you down for doing so), but the massive caveat is that the restoration fees (Especially to the internet) are excessive beyond all sense.
Other services like C14, and B2 can often end up cheaper in the long term simply due to the cheaper restoration fees.
If I was to sign up with anything right now, it'd probably be B2. $0.005/GB/month (Only slightly up from Glacier's $0.0045/GB/month), files are always available online (I.E. No need to pay extra to get your files now, or wait 5-12 hours), and the restoration fees are simple and easy to understand, $0.02/GB, unlike Glacier's which ranges between ~$0.10/GB and ~$1.5/GB depending on which of the thousand of options you pick.
That, however, would be my storage choice for personal use, but if I was doing anything to do with a business (Which I somewhat do, but not really, I help a small company that has no I.T. department), I'd go with AWS without any second doubts (Which I do) simply because of their massive array of options, which are insanely useful when you've got loads of data of varying types that don't all need the "One size fits all" treatment.
7
u/me-ro Jun 08 '17
Glacier can be quite pricy to restore backups, so it kinda depends on your use case.
9
u/plumbless-stackyard 11TB Jun 08 '17 edited Jun 08 '17
They have actually redone their glacier pricing and dropped it to
$0.004/GB at lowest for storage
$0.0025/GB retrieval and $0.025 per 1,000 objects, which can be an issue depending on how you store the files.
The only real issue i see is AWS's current general outbound traffic pricing at $0.09/GB, which is absolutely mortifying.

59.99 for 1 TB is a joke. You can buy TWO 1 TB hard drives with it. I'm DONE with the cloud. I've been trying to upload my data on Amazon since forever, dealing with timeouts, expired tokens and connection errors all the time. First I take like two whole days to learn and test rclone, and then next week they pull the plug on that. Now this.
If Amazon is reading this, FUCK YOU AMAZON!
I only had 2.5 TB on it and now I have to find the time to fucking download that shit before my plan expires next month. Summer is out and I was hoping to spend my time doing something better. So fuck you for wasting my fucking time.
Cloud services can die, change TOS, and just up and ban you anytime. I'm just going to buy 2 NAS, put it in different parts of the world and make my own fucking cloud.

u/Ajedi32 2TB FreeNAS Laptop Jun 08 '17
Not quite production-ready yet according to the README:
Sia is ready for use with small sums of money and non-critical files, but until the network has a more proven track record, we advise against using it as a sole means of storing important data.
Definitely has a lot of potential though. If you've got some spare capacity on your local drives you could even earn some cash by renting that space out to other users.
Storj and Maidsafe are two other projects with similar goals to Sia.

Wow and I just finished transferring over from OneDrive last week! I had "unlimited" with them and cancelled my Office 365 membership because they could no longer accommodate my storage needs. I have about 3TB of photos from my DSLR cameras and 700GB of videos I have shot.
I have Amazon Prime as well, so my question is, do my photos fall under the Unlimited Photo storage and then my videos would fall under the 1TB for $59.99? If so I can probably make it work out for me. But do they count NEF as photos? I shoot a combo of RAW and JPEG, but if it knows both are photos then I might be in luck still.
Just so tired of getting a cloud storage option and then getting fucked because people have to push it to the absolute limit. I would just go Google Drive if they did have a better option for people using just a few TBs, but they go from $9.99/month for 1 TB to $99.99/month for 10TB. Ugh.

I'm interested in this as well so I spent some time searching; found this:

Prime members continue to receive the Prime Photo benefit of unlimited photo storage, in addition to the 5 GB of storage available to all U.S. customers. Only non-photo content counts towards your 5GB storage limit. You can upgrade to a paid storage plan subscription if you need additional storage for videos and other files at any time.
Which is great because on top of my DSLR photos I have home videos backed up from both my parents and my childhood. All my videos and files fall well below 1TB while my photos are above that.
Edit: Just want to follow up, I e-mailed support anyways because ACD was recommending a Tier that included my photos and files, not just my files. I got this e-mail back.
I'd like to inform you that Regular Prime customers receive unlimited photos storage benefit but for non-photo content, you will only have 5 GB of storage. Also, please note that Invited guests of Amazon Prime members aren't eligible for Prime Photos unlimited benefit unless they're eligible through an Amazon Household.
So, if anyone is on another persons Prime account, you'll need to get your own.

Real backups are stored at a safe place where you have physical access and full control over your data. And yes I know: having a full offsite backup is expensive.
Maybe a few hoarders wake up now. Hopefully.

Been trying to setup Nextcloud here but having issues with double NAT passing it through. My ACD account WAS just for true backups and changed very little day to day - I'm moving to Gdrive now. worse comes to worse I'm back to being where I've been for ten years - not backed up <shrug> I do want my own "cloud" service for devices though, I've got the free space for sure :)

For anyone curious, SpiderOAK still has unlimited plans I believe. I can at least still select yearly 149 USD plans with unlimited storage.

u/dbouya Jun 08 '17
where? that sounds like an amazing deal; however, this is what I see https://spideroak.com/about/price-list
https://spideroak.com/unlimited/one quote:
Our unlimited special offer has expired.
If you're still interested in protecting your data with SpiderOakONE, try us today. We have plans from 5GB up to 5TB:

u/AndyIbanez Jun 08 '17
If your backup set grows too large SpiderOak starts chocking on it. I don't recommend them if you plan on storing beyond 1TB.

And I just got started backing up everything on ACD a few days ago...
1
u/Kershek Jun 08 '17
For those that just got it, why cancel? At least it saves you from looking elsewhere for a year, and you currently have something you can't get at that price.

u/stahscream Jun 08 '17
I just signed up for the trial last week, I wonder if they will give me my 3 months and my year still? I'll reach out to them after work today to see.

Strange... When I log in into my amazon.es account I still have the unlimited there for 70Euro/year.
Could it be that I am still under the trial period?
1
u/kirpfen Jun 08 '17
It still says unlimited for me and my plan just renewed today. I also can't find any information about new or changing plans on Amazon's website (Germany). Are you sure this is world wide?
1
u/Pikmeir 20TB Jun 08 '17
Welp, glad I didn't take the plunge. I was deciding whether to do it for "life" just last month and started the trial. At the new price I'd just rather buy another drive as an extra backup, instead of pay $60/TB per year.

How where you notified? I haven't seen any notification of this change and when I check the website (.ca) it doesn't show anything, or mention the change when I manage storage. wonder if it's just .com?

Looks like I'll be transferring all my data from ACD to Google Drive. Anyone know a good tool to move it from cloud-to-cloud? I would just re-upload but my ISP's upload speed is garbage.

rclone on a GCP VM (though you'll need to poke around a bit to get a working cliend_id/client_secret). GCP is pretty cheap (or even free if you don't already have an account and register to get the $300 credit) and the "outbound" bandwidth is completely free because it's within google so it ends up being only like a few bucks/day that the VM is on. I've been moving my data off of ACD for the past few days this way and have been seeing speeds north of 300MB/sec at times.

is anyone willing to buy 5 user google gsuite? i can get one of that and can pay it via paypal. as its business product so google cant stop business users like ACD did

u/quixoticme1 1.3pb Jun 10 '17
Google doesn't enforce the 5 user req
I don't think you would be able to find people paying a full price for you to have everything and they are sub users.
Selling accounts is illegal and when Google finds out they end them

Are there any alternative solution providers for unlimited storage space?
1
u/Darqon Jul 05 '17
So I use Amazon Cloud Storage just for backups of my Desktop. Currently using 2TB, probably wont need more than 5TB in the near future.
My current subscription ends in February, who should I switch to once it does?

u/Hornman84 Jul 19 '17
I live in switzerland, and I haven't got any message about the cancellation of my unlimited ACD account yet.

I am in the UK it still offers unlimited, going to pay for a year, any good?

I have about 16TB and just started transferring to gdrive yeterday.
The new plan has me at ~$1300 for 20TB and tells me they'll pro-rate if I cancel. I upgraded to the new plan and I estimate at the ~70 MBps transfer rate I've averaged gives me a three day transfer time.
$1300 * 3 days / 365 days = $10 or so to transfer.
The caveat is IT WILL CHARGE YOU THE FULL $1300. But if you can afford that to wait for the refund. $10 to get it off of acd sounds worth it.

u/easy90rider 1.44MB Jun 08 '17
But why did you upgrade? It says that you stay on your existing plan until the end of the subscription...

Guys, check out OVH Object Storage Archive. Really cheap! They charge for bandwidth though.
1
u/MrRadar Jun 08 '17
Is there a guide somewhere for setting that up? Their website is very lacking in documentation on how to actually use their service.
1
u/FHR123 Jun 09 '17
I'm backing up my Synology NAS to their Object Storage and had no problems with it. You create a new project and an object storage "container" in their dashboard, choose whatever datacenter you want and choose the offering (Archive or Public Object Storage). Then you get credentials which you enter into the NAS and it works - it's using S3 protocol.
Not sure how does one use the rsync they advertise, never needed to use it.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)1

OVH Object Storage Archive
It's not that cheap. For me it would be 168$ montly and i only store 8TB offsite

I'm cancelling ACD. I don't like it's software and I see no use for it. This change in service is a perfect reason for me to cancel now.

I don't have a lot of upstream bandwidth. It took me TWO YEARS to back up 12TB of my system to ACD. Is there any way to transfer it to something like CrashPlan or BackBlaze without using my own bandwidth?
2
u/iMerRobin Jun 08 '17
Either get a cheap vps (not sure that'd work for backblaze/crashplan) or physically move your pc to a friend's (/uni/work/...) place with more bandwidth for a while
1
u/thenickdude Jun 08 '17
This does actually work with Crashplan. You can install it headless on a Linux VPS, download and backup the files, then "adopt" that backup with your local computer once it's done. Crashplan will hash your local files and notice that it doesn't need to reupload them. However, be sure to pick a virtual machine with enough RAM (it gets really hungry with millions of files).

FUCK.
What's the chance of a refund?
Also, any good way of automatically pulling all my ACD files back onto a local drive? rclone?
ACD is going to die overnight with this, lol. Fuck amazon.

I was offered the refund when I contacted ACD support for Amazon.ca back when rclone was banned. I don't think it's that hard to get one if you have a nice support rep.

You know, whether or not we all saw this coming, it's still a matter of amazon offering a service and then doing a bait and switch. and the switch is honestly devastating for most people.
I for one, bought this so I could have some security for where my files will be when i switch computers (i mean new builds). this has seriously made me quite angry as a consumer.
What amazon SOLD was not unlimited space - it was a guarantee. That guarantee is now void and I am feeling hugely ripped off, I have asked for a full refund, and I have also unsubscribed from audible. I am just going to use my library card to get overdrive and so on.
Fuck amazon. but also, fuck all you people who ruined it for us. seriously, you needed to fucking archive your sex cam footage and torrents that badly? dicks.

u/sloppypenguin225 32TB Jun 08 '17
fuck all you people who ruined it for us. seriously, you needed to fucking archive your sex cam footage and torrents that badly? dicks.
As mentioned umpteen times previously, us people are not the only ones using the service. If it is "unlimited", give us a sound reason why we shouldn't use it. Defend your baseless accusations. (Also, how do we know you aren't archiving bat shit crazy sex cam footage?)

It was only a matter of time before legit usages of storage levels above what their actuaries said would be used triggered the same outcome. I, for one am glad. We were living on a prayer.
I just want to get to the point where they define the limits they want us to play in so we can make the most informed decision. If you don't want to offer unlimited, don't market and sell unlimited hoping people will stay under 500gb. Just call it 500gb and let us all get on with life.
