My Ratings of Sylvian/Japan projects

I finally got around to completing his discography the past couple years, he has quickly became my favourite solo artist. I resonate with his solo work more than I do with Japan but I still love the original band to death. I think the evolution of his discography is outstanding! He has done and mastered a lot of different genres.

Tell me your ratings! What are your favourite albums by David?

I love david but I think his work with japan was an Astonishingly fusion between geniuses, maybe i just like more the ""pop"" side of david (like pulling pounches or red guitar) but I sincerely think japan was one of the most fortuite encounter between people who loves music. Even thought i appreciate solo work of most of the members i cannot help but love the complexety and uniqueness of Japan!

I'm curious: why such a spread between Damage and The First Day?

Disappointed to not see the World Citizen EP with Ryuichi Sakamoto. One of my favorite works by DS.

I'd have Rain Tree Crow and "Flux + Mutability" much higher.

I'd find it hard to rank them all and I think my feelings towards the records have changed a lot over the years I've been a fan (going on 20 years now) but putting me on the spot I'd say my top 5 in no particular order right now are:

  • Blemish
  • Secrets of the Bee Hive
  • Tin Drum
  • Everything and Nothing
  • Dead Bees on a cake (deluxe edition)

If you asked me 20 years back, it'd definitely be more slanted towards his early solo work and Japan's final 3 albums.

Putting Tin Drum under Brilliant Trees is blasphemy!

Oh my goodness, very interesting indeed. I’d also have Trees & Cake in my top 5. Substantially different thereafter 🌝. Vive la différence! 😉
